I would say its a warning to Danny about how dangerous the hotel is, because remember Tony is living in Danny's 'mouth' which is shown as the elevator, so it could be a body that signifies Tony, and that they won't be safe, so I think that theory is quite reasonable
I think I know exactly what that object is!! Kubrick the wise man he is, has used some form of device with a decline in order to make the blood seem like flowing whilst saving in the amount of blood he's using!
Not to disagree with the fact that kubrick did in fact use subliminal messages in his films, but I think the so called object which can be seen in this scene its a device of some sort (as simple as a box) that breaks open a greater volume of blood to be directed towards Kubrick's desired point of direction!! Maybe he was just trying to control the flow of the blood?
people need to let the detail hunting on this one go. let it go. kubrick was legendary for his pedantic detail fixing and hounding of employees/colleagues, but he was a slouch in his own right; Full Metal Jacket; Crazy Earl reloads his rifle and shoots some escaping Viet-Cong, just before the Surfin' Bird montage. there is a massive editing glitch in Kubrick's editing in these few shots, keep your eyes on Crazy Earl's rifle magazine. Kubrick, the great orchestrator, could screw up too.
I wonder if perhaps Danny has been born at all or if Wendy is pregnant with him during the film. This scene being my jump off point as it seems to me to depict a birth of some description. Shortly afterwards you see Danny running from the maze and falling. Wendy calls his name and drops her knife in the snow at which point Danny starts to call her name, perhaps a subliminal for cutting the umbilical chord? The two kiss and embrace before leaving Jack "out in the cold" if you will
The possibility of it being a person could be accurate, but in the clip explanation, the maker tells us that this scene was shot with a miniature and then showed the backstage clean up for it. So if it was a miniature set, a human body would be much larger than the elevator doors in the shot. To me it looks like something that popped up from the floor to deflect the blood so that it would splash at greater heights on the floor and walls. Intensionally there or not, who knows? Well done SK.
@letmebeme341 The object is there to control which direction the blood will flow or splash up into the air. The way the the waves crash into the walls doesn't look very natural to me... Why would he hide a dead body there and go to such lengths to make it invisible.
@DaveDrumstick Provide an example of water splashes playing similar eye tricks elsewhere and that'll be definitely worth taking seriously. So far nobody's found up with such a clip.
@robag88 There's a very accurate computer simulation of the entyre sequence, look it up. The "object" you mention is just the blood itself flowing and disappears when the flux stops.
@DaveDrumstick Yeah the guy who made it has posted something like a hundred messages on here. His simulation isn't accurate. His blood is as thick as treacle, hence it's reflective like liquid mercury but the real clip has thousands of splashing droplets. And he's clearly designed the shape of the flow to match the real clip rather than letting the computer calculate the flow - he's even programmed the chair right screen to move in the same way as the original clip.
@1111yankees He's dead ... and when he was alive he often flat out refused to answer question about the content and meaning of his films. And how is this a conspiracy theory? We're not talking Al Queda or Shape Shifting Lizards. I'm a film maker and I pack my films full of subliminal stuff.
Dude let it go, there is nothing to see. What you are noticing is just a reflection, as pointed out by the guy who did that 3d rendering of this scene. It's all about the blood.. there's no way Kubrick would bother adding "some object" that cannot be seen. Think about it. It's a miniature set, probably shot by 2nd unit director.. there's no actors in this scene. Kubrick had his work cut out in other scenes. He would have been happy with this shot... there's no secret object in the blood!!
@chaiTV The guy with the 3D rendering made his blood thick as treacle so it's a completely unrealistic comparison. A lot of people see a solid object in there. If you want to prove otherwise find some video clips of splashing water playing similar tricks on the eyes. So far nobody's found even one clip.
As for why Kubrick would do it, a lot of film makers (including me) encode hidden messages and subliminals in their work. Lynch and Hitchcock for example.
i can swear i see a head and arm and even fingers... I have a theory that Wendy was pregnant and "Tony" was the ghost of the unborn child. The river of blood represented a miscarriage? i have no idea. Great mental chewing gum, here. I wonder how large the 'person' would be in relation to the elevator? it appears to be child-size. Has anyone else given any thought to Wendy being pregnant with another child? I prefer to have my ideas investigated for me due to laziness. Thanks for the video!
@culturewarrior2012 .... SPOILERS tony is, according to the novel, danny from the future, sending himself messages. danny's full name is Anthony Daniel Torrance. The blood signifies, the native american burial ground, those who died fighting off the natives during the hotel's construction, those who died of, by-and-large, natural causes while guests at the hotel, and any psychics/"shiners" the O
@culturewarrior2012 ..[cont'd]... the Overlook managed to chow on since its completion. no pregnancy, no miscarriage, just impending slaughter, and or tragedy etc., especially considering SPOILERS wendy and danny ride down a wolf infested mountain in the middle of a blizzard with no cold weather protective clothing in a snowcat that hasn't been refuelled. Jack's stark, icy fate, punctuated by shrill string notes can very easily also be applied to wendy and danny's fate.
You know when you're obsessed with someone thinking he's a genius? Kind of like L'ron Hubbard and all his obsessed followers. Its just light reflecting off the blood,,, or did people forget that liquids reflect light,
@IndieDaily That's not much of an argument is it? Kubrick didn't start a cult so the Hubbard comparison is nonsense. As for light reflection a lot of people on here completely disagree. Some think it is a deliberate piece of visual encoding from Kubrick as part of the subliminal structure of the film (yes, subliminal encoding does get used in films, esp horror), especially being that there's no river of blood in the film. Others say it's a device to control the blood flow.
The glaringly obvious question that debunks this ... how does something 'flop out' of a tiny gap in the side of the elevator bit enough to create the disturbance in the water as you describe, it's not physically possible. It's simply fluid dynamics and reflections. Nothing more.
@TheDeadlyAvenger That may be so. But take into account that Kubrick shot the river of blood countless times. (4:11). He may have done so to make this mistake occur on purpose just like all the huge continuity errors in the rest of the movie.
@TheDeadlyAvenger If you look at the sliding of the door it first opens quickly then pauses then opens further. The door, as demonstrated in the shot of Ullman leaving an elevator, is not mechanical. It is operated manually by a person pulling it open. A manual door opening on it's own is physically impossible. So yes, it is something more.
@robag88 - The river of blood elevator is a prop, so how the real one opens is irrelevant, also, for something 'drop out' and land where it alledegly did, and not be affected by the force of the flow, must mean it's quite heavy, which contradicts where it would have landed, it would be much closer to the opening. So I'm definately in the camp of people are looking for something that simply isn't there. Classic Rorschach syndrome.
Hey Everybody! I have released my new album 'Unhinged' which is inspired by my all time favorite movie, The Shining, and great horror games like Resident Evil/Silent Hill etc... You can listen to all of it or download it for free on my youtube channel!
@ethanwc It's a 33 year old film and many people who worked on it are dead or retired. Also SK used minimal crew and rarely told his crew what he was up to on set. Biographies quote many collaborators explaining that he often seemed to be up to things that he wasn't saying. I did go to the SK archives in London and found a lot of material verifying other subliminal themes, but there's hardly anything there about the blood river shot.
looking more at it, it looks like a 'slide' on teh left, maybe for the blood to come down and be directed toward the left wall other wise it would poor out directly down hall, but , then it looks like dark space under the 'slide' , but there is something that almost looks crouching down to the right of the 'slide' structure. more i watch it the more it stands out.
I must need a better monitor, or an eye test, because I still (after watching this 3 times) don't know what you're going on about. Maybe one of the surviving crew knows.
It is not a reflection because you can see form, the blood splashes over it not directly to the floor. I am not sure if this is a body, but it would make sense because the door cant open alone. Maybe the reason he shot the scene so many times was an attempt to cover up the guy who falls out after opening the door.MAYBE he was too noticeable in the other shots.
@TheSoftGlimmer I'd go with that. He was probably trying to get a shot where the body (if it is a body) is slightly visible, but only on close observation.
did you seen the guy who made a video answering your question...Its a reflection in the blood. I think you are choosing the right films though for rigorous analysis. What I find most interesting in the Shining (among many things) is the doubling in the film and Freud's notion of the Uncanny executed so very well. The use of mirrors and the twins and the symmetrical shots of Halloran all being key in this area. Keep up the good work. I enjoy anyone discussing The Shining.
@jaredneedsalife Yes, the guy, whoever he is, has tried for months and months to discredit the idea of an object in the blood. Watch his 3D rendering again. His blood is as thick as treacle so it reflects. The blood in the film splashes like water ... that is except for the solid area highlighted in the video. Why would a small area at the point of impact with the floor reflect while the rest doesn't? Only a large bubble could do that, but the shape lasts too long to be a bubble
While the elevator can appear face like, there is no object. The reflection shines off the wall and off the blood, that compared with the slow motion camera work and the viscosity of the liquid, it appears to shape itself. Think of when a faucet is turned partially on, the water seems to dance and make shapes that you can project whatever you want onto. Because fluid doesn't react the same way or duplicate movement exactly as planned, that can have something to do with the constant reshots.
if its a reflection, why is the blood splashing off of it, or away from the blood already there. its not like its a separate stream, its has to be hitting something.
Have you ever heard the saying "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?" I don't think that an 8 minute video should be dedicated to such a minuscule detail. You're treating it as if this is the key to knowing what The Shining is truly about.
@slimbond227 Yeah funny that Freud came out with that one, but he saw cocks everywhere lol.
You think I'm treating this as if it is the key to knowing what The Shining is all about. Far from it. Watch my video on Spatial Anomolies in The Shining. there's a lot more to the film than a hidden object in a river of blood.
@robag88 I have seen your Spatial Anomalies video and you are absolutely right. That video showed how in depth the film actually is. Sometimes, your analysis become a little too inane. When I saw this video in my subscription box, I thought "8 minutes on something in the elevator? Oh no, he's gone over the deep end."
However, I do want to mention that I did like how you reckoned the elevator to being Danny's mouth with Tony living in it. I am still a big fan and watch every video.
for sure not a fluke, intentional. really like the tony theory, but also like the hotel "owning" ullman. the hotel seems to be alive in of itself in a way, and thought perhaps a possible third theory would be the "literal" veins of the hotel opening, but discredit this third due to the hotel winning in the end anyway.. the object looks like a roll of carpet with a person in it to me, meant to interpret something else, an obvious point for discussion...
I'm guessing it was an aid of some kind to get the blood to flow in a certain direction and get a more dramatic look as opposed to it hitting the floor and not doing much beyond flowing forward along the floor, or at least something less dramatic than the final shot shows.
If there is something there it is very subtle. The reflections on the blood actually serve to mask whatever is there rather than highlight it. My suspicion is that whatever it was was rigged to make the blood flow more how Kubrick wanted it and might not have been meant to be seen at all. It may have been a pipe carrying fake blood that just fell down of course.
i think that the object represents that the hotel "owns" ullman. during this part of the film every other named character was who had been present in the overlook was there except ullman
Also I just thought about the reference to the elevator doors being manually opened. The door that Mr. Ullman opens is a layer of two with a scissor grate. The elevator here only shows one and plus if the doors were meant to be open by hand where is the handle on the outside? I think the scene of Mr. Ullman opening the door wasn't meant to be noticed in-detail and that having him open the door was just easier than rigging up a automatic opening door.
My first thought as I tried to identify the object was that it looked like an old 35mm stills camera. Like one Kubrick might have worked with as a photographer for Look magazine. It would have fit a similar analysis of the Monolith in 2001 as being the movie screen turned on its side. In this case, the camera is part of the violence. But the scale of the set was not that small. Is it an object to make a good splash? Also there were elevator attendants who would sit in the old days.
Kubrick did pay attention to detail and was involved in the editing. Off topic, why does he allow a clear shot of the shadow of the helicopter in the opening credits? Bottom right...
@Jadama0 apparently it was because a disolve point had been set up in the edit and when it was changed they missed the sudden appearance of the chopper shadow
i was always fascinated with this scene as a child. now i know why. there is definately something solid in falling out of the elevator onto the floor as the blood rushes out of the elevator.
I haven't seen the film for a long time. I've forgotten everything about it. So don't bash me for this, i've forgotten the ending, everything that wasn't mentioned in this. But as soon as you mentioned that he see's it the first 3 times and then she does the final, I imagined his dead body he see's and then it finally is him when she see's. I'll have to watch the film again to be honest, but remembering nothing of the film apart from this video, that's all I can get.
By the way, I think it's just something accidentally fell there and people didn't see it.
The really scary and interesting thing is the spook you made with your comments. I'm really scared now, if even your research is senseless and nothing there in the blood.
This is seriously creepy. It would be amazing if there was some explanation behind it but I think it could just be a mistake. After all, at the start of the Shining there's a mistake where you can clearly see the shadow of the helicopter in which they were filming the aerial shots. Unless that was left in deliberately as well?
re. the mirror view in the Danny and Tony scene - there's some things like the shot of Jack and Wendy (i think when she brings breakfast on a tray) when it's filmed in a mirror view - the writing on his shirt is backwards, and then also more obviously of course the Redrum mirror writing.
somebody may have said this already, but is it not a possibility that the object is simply something they used in the production of making this scene? by that i mean something technical that they used to actually created the blood falling out of the elevator?
I would have to side with the idea that it's a body or corpse that opened the door. Even though the 'river of blood' is not in the novel it does mention an elevator several times. There are also more parts of ghosts that appear to be walking corpses towards the end of the novel so maybe he decided to throw one in? But even it's not a body, I do notice that it seems to have a shine or reflection to it on some parts. Almost like it's metallic. Thanks for the video. I never noticed it before. :)
the reason the two hoses disappear in the "red" shot is that if you watch closely, the screen goes completely black for a moment. That's long enough to cut the film and insert new footage OR it was long enough for the hoses to be pulled back into the elevator and shut the doors. No real mystery here.
@Kirke182 Yes there's definitely a cut at that point, but the mystery still remains regarding what the object is in the blood. also, have you noticed the furniture moves around completely unrealistically in the red shot?
@Kirke182 A lot of people here are seeing what I'm seeing - a body. Why make it flesh toned? Why not alter the lighting so that it's not visible? Why even have a hose in that part of the shot in the first place when gravity will suffice? And why did SK do multiple takes, each time claiming "It doesn't look like blood."? And most of all why have a river of blood shot in the first place when it wasn't in the book? The symbolism of the door and dials as Danny's screaming face is certainly there.
Now that i think about it.. The object flopping out of the elevator looks to me like one of three things... a large clot of blood, which could possibly be a subliminal thing about denial, a leech, which, as i noticed after watching the film again - Wendy seems to become almost lethargic as the film goes on, while Jack grows more active, as if he's a leech removing energy from her. Or, the object could be a body in a body bag, which would tie in with other signs of Jack's violent tendencies.
personally, i thought this was amazing. who knows? you could be totally right! you definitely had A LOT of details to back up your conclusion. GREAT job at this!! i thought it was amazing(:
I believe that its some object (kind of a sphere obstical) used simply to rotate the spilling of the blood to the walls. And thats the reason the elevator door opens in the beginning half and then full. Flow control.
I also would like to add that Kubrick may have been a master of many things but in the same line as yours, someone could clame the following
2 elevator doors, 3 objects above the doors and 2 frames of pictures left, right ...
@ni33de Yeah I know what you mean. i've argued with numerology interpretations like that for years, but the difference is those can be mathematically proved to be there by chance. Carol Vorderman would get 237 out of almost any arbitrary set of numbers. But if you examine the details of this scene it doesn't add up as being a sluice. It's flesh toned. Jets would have to be used at the side alcoves to create a symmetrical upward splash, which would make an elevator sluice redundant.
@SamanthaBgirl Well no, you're stupid if you just jump to the simplest and easiest conclusion without thinking it out. First of all the object is flesh toned, if it was hoses they'd have colour matched it to the blood. Second they could have altered the lighting to make the object less noticeable. Third the upward splashing from the sides was undoubtedly done with pumps hidden behind the alcoves at the sides so it splashed up symmetrically, which rules out the need for pumps in the elevator.
To me, it looks like a body, it looks like the back of a head and the shoulders. The only problem is you cannot make out any appendages like arms. It just looks like a head and a torso.
very interesting video althought the music u used kinda freaked me out a littler.. i thought this was investigating.. u made the elevators scarier then they are.. thanks alot.. now im taking the stairs
As I watch this very video, I feel entranced. Ah, yes...I am imagining myself as the little boy and bathing myself in the blood...in the dark, red, oozy, staining blood...and drinking it down, tasting its coppery, salty taste in my mouth, consuming with a voracious appetite the bloodshed of other human beings....ah, yes, feels quite good.
Very interesting analysis, and I don't in any way want to discourage you from doing them, but I think you are over thinking. The object is so obscure that I think it is prop equipment. Knowing Kubricks films as I do, if he wanted us to see it, he would have made it clearer. In my opinion, and I have a degree in film from UCLA. this is simply a prop issue. IMDB is full of things like this from every movie that was ever made. You cannot make a full length feature film without them.
@guyfihi I disagree about Kubrick making all intentional details easily noticeable. Watch my video Spatial anomolies in The Shining for very strong evidence of Escher style designs in the Overlook Hotel designed to disorientate the audience :) Also, I'm a film maker and I put all kinds of subliminals in my work, some easily noticed, some very obscure.
ahhh I just found this! loved the idea and the video. I am now convinced that is someone.. I think you can see a body -- upper body, facing down, head and shoulders.. the manual opening of the door could mean that the person that ends up in the floor is opening the doors.. with a certain difficulty because, well, of all the blood and horrible death : )
Hrm. But what does it represent? If anything? One idea, though I wouldn't follow it (I have Lovecraft on the brain) when the blood is pouring out just before we see the object, I can't help but see the black stream as like some kind of tendril and the object like some kind of appendage at the end. I might be seeing things, but after you pointed out that object that's what I'm seeing.
wow, imagine people trying to make sense of unexplained things in a film that was directed by a master of the subliminal. lets leave comments hating on pretty much everone execpt ourselfs for reasons no one is real sure of, maybe people are trolling to compensate for something, such as a lack of schooling or a life?
If the elevator is manually operated, it might have a chair for the operator, though this chair looks more elegant, like one of those in the lobby, only larger.
It has a metal part on the right and a "stuffed" part, to the left.
But, that doesn't add much, in my mind.
So yeah, it could just be something to make the blood swirl, as blood-like behavior seemed to be a Kubrick priority. It's lashed to something to keep it close by the door.
It does look like a body. I don't go for very abstracted symbolism in these things, but my first thought was of Grady's daughters - this is reinforced by the fact that the first elevator shot is cut through with shots of the girls, and by the fact that they're the most bloody and horrific victims in the film. Whether it was intended as such or not, I involuntarily imagine that the object is one of their bodies- which makes this scene even more unwatchable and effective.
Rob, this is a very fascinating analysis you've made here. Your analysis of the human face in the elevator and Tony are very creepy. The CGI rendition of this lead me to believe it's a reflection, though. How could they retract the object so we couldn't see it once the blood settled?
I think the only way to be really sure is to find someone who worked on that set, on that shot and ask them, if they were willing to talk. Or go to the Archive and dig in to the files there.
@robag88 No, Rob, I agree with you, there is definitely something in there. My girlfriend and I watched it frame by frame and it is without a doubt, obvious there is something in there. We could tell by a white speck that appears about halfway through the pour that doesn't move with the rest of the flow of the water. You can see the reflections on the blood, yes, but they move with the flow of the liquid, there is one speck that stays perfectly still as the blood cascades over it.
@robag88 We believe this is a spreader, used to force the movement of the blood evenly against both walls. I think a corpse is unlikely as it would hinder the flow of the blood, acting as a dam that would cause erratic splashing. However, I love your analysis of this being Tony and the elevator mirroring Danny's face. Maybe the spreader was made up to look like a body? I don't know, but there is definitely something in there. Nice find.
@robag88 Then you're seeing what you want to see at this point. The CG interpretation is indeed a case of Occam's Razor, and you've been looking at that Rorschach test for too long.
I would agree with many people here, this is probably just an item meant to help the blood flow in a cooler manner. It's probably not meant to be anything, although, wollclark is right, it really does remind me on a body for the first few seconds.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Seriously, get a life. You're looking for things that simply aren't there, and were never intended to be there. Kubrick may have a unique style, yes he may throw in the odd subliminal element, but this is just fucking stupid. What on earth are you going to do next, get out a microscope and inspect each and every pixel of each and every frame looking for something new? Why am I even asking that question, you probably already have!
@J20M07 Your argument fell apart at "Get a life". I've got a girlfriend, a job, lots of friends and I write, produce, direct and edit films. I therefore study the works of great film makers. I also encode a lot of subliminal stuff in my own films, which is why I notice these kinds of things when done by other film makers like Lynch, Hitchcock and especially Kubrick.
So what subliminal elements have you noticed in films? Or are you in complete denial they get used at all?
No, but take the argument (for example) about its ending. Kubrick stated clearly that the photo suggested the reincarnation of Jack, yet STILL thousands of people argue against the fact and continue to believe that there's something else to it when he said himself that there wasn't. People are constantly and desperately looking for answers and can't accept the fact that maybe, they were only meant to take it at face value and that's all. There is nothing in the blood. It's just blood.
@robag88 Mate, I would just ignore idiots like this and delete their comments. The Internet is full of bitter losers with bunker mentality who spend their time spraying invective everywhere to try and balm their self-hatred and insecurity. Everyone else thinks your videos are boss. They can be a little speculative but that's half the fun in these things, right? 'The Meaning of the Monolith' completely blew me away.
@robag88 Don't bother explaining yourself to your detractors. I have found that NO explanation will satisfy hostile mongrels. You are doing important work that contributes to the appreciation of film and awakening many people to the techniques used to influence the audience. AND you show how these techniques are also used by people with malevolent motives. Let the apes fling their psychic feces. They only shame themselves. I look forward to seeing more of your analysis videos in the future.
Clearly there is a community of pretentious cunty film students who are indoctrinated into over-analysing things and believe themselves to be so much more superior to everyone else because they're just born super knowledgeable and notice things that the 'masses' don't. I can't stand your deluded attitude..so do me a favour and go back to Starbucks, order your Frappuchino, get out your Apple Mac and go and sit with all the other pseudo-artistic dick head posers and fuck off, cos no one cares love
This is the most butthurt thing I've ever heard in my life. Some guy does a bit of an over-analysis of something he loves and puts it on the internet and your response is to go off on a retarded tangent that paints this guy as some sort of asshole-you've never met him! He made a video about a movie-OH WHAT A CUNT MR. FANCY MCANALYSIS, WITH ALL A HIS DURN BOOK LERNIN!!! God you are a moron, STOP HAVING FUN GUYS HOW DARE YOU BE AT ALL ANALYTICAL DERP DERP
@J20M07 Yea, seriously, you got owned here. Film makers actually do put things like this in their movies. It's not a for sure thing, but something is there. Kubrick was the kind of guy to inspect every pixel and carefully manipulate every shadow. And it's not like he said "yes, this is for sure what's going on" but suggesting the possibility something might be there that's symbolic.
I'm not sure I completely agree with you, but to go further in the direction you're pointing I would suggest that the "wrong" opening sides of the elevators doors opening could be explained by Danny's vision in the mirror... Kubrick's work is fascinating.
I think it is a device shaped like a wedge ( V ) to get the blood to spread left and right and not so much down the middle of the hallway so the blood could then build up on the side walls and them meet back in the middle of the scene further down the hallway and in front of the camera. This also helps the blood build up on the right and form a wave over the couch on the right as well as send a good deal of blood down the left side of the wall.
I think the fact that this is causing so much debate is more of a testament to the power of Stanley Kubrick's filmmaking than anything else. It matters not if the object is for storytelling purposes or just a movie device, it's fascinating that it could be EITHER of those things in a Kubrick film. Personally, knowing Kubrick's style, I don't think there's a chance in hell it's just a device. He would have done everything to ensure nothing like that would be visible during a scene.
Alright i would like to make a connection here. Kanye West made a short film, not a music video, titled: We were once a fairytale. youtube it real it quick. In the final scenes, he cuts his "stomach" open and blood pours out and he removes the demon within. Could the elevator symbolize dannys stomach and demon within falling out? (object)
Thats why the demon doesnt want to go to the hotel, because danny will escape the evil (Jack) and eventually overcome it and win
this was filmed on a miniature set....and slowed down and extended the frams to mke it appear in slow motion, in real life the scene was over n just a about a second. it would be impossible to hide something like that, then make it appear, then hide it again. especially on a miniature set. its merely a reflection
This video is actually really creepy; with the constant shot of the elevator and the music, I actually find this hard to watch

I would say its a warning to Danny about how dangerous the hotel is, because remember Tony is living in Danny's 'mouth' which is shown as the elevator, so it could be a body that signifies Tony, and that they won't be safe, so I think that theory is quite reasonable

Well done SK.
letmebeme341 3 weeks ago
@letmebeme341 The object is there to control which direction the blood will flow or splash up into the air. The way the the waves crash into the walls doesn't look very natural to me... Why would he hide a dead body there and go to such lengths to make it invisible.

There's no object, it's just the phisycs of light reflection on a surface, that's it.

robag88 1 month ago
@robag88 There's a very accurate computer simulation of the entyre sequence, look it up. The "object" you mention is just the blood itself flowing and disappears when the flux stops.
DaveDrumstick 1 month ago
@DaveDrumstick Yeah the guy who made it has posted something like a hundred messages on here. His simulation isn't accurate. His blood is as thick as treacle, hence it's reflective like liquid mercury but the real clip has thousands of splashing droplets. And he's clearly designed the shape of the flow to match the real clip rather than letting the computer calculate the flow - he's even programmed the chair right screen to move in the same way as the original clip.

markfreemon 1 month ago
Dude let it go, there is nothing to see. What you are noticing is just a reflection, as pointed out by the guy who did that 3d rendering of this scene. It's all about the blood.. there's no way Kubrick would bother adding "some object" that cannot be seen. Think about it. It's a miniature set, probably shot by 2nd unit director.. there's no actors in this scene. Kubrick had his work cut out in other scenes. He would have been happy with this shot... there's no secret object in the blood!!
chaiTV 1 month ago

You know when you're obsessed with someone thinking he's a genius? Kind of like L'ron Hubbard and all his obsessed followers. Its just light reflecting off the blood,,, or did people forget that liquids reflect light,
IndieDaily 1 month ago
@IndieDaily That's not much of an argument is it? Kubrick didn't start a cult so the Hubbard comparison is nonsense. As for light reflection a lot of people on here completely disagree. Some think it is a deliberate piece of visual encoding from Kubrick as part of the subliminal structure of the film (yes, subliminal encoding does get used in films, esp horror), especially being that there's no river of blood in the film. Others say it's a device to control the blood flow.
robag88 1 month ago
at what time of the movie is that scene?
1schwererziehbar1 2 months ago
The glaringly obvious question that debunks this ... how does something 'flop out' of a tiny gap in the side of the elevator bit enough to create the disturbance in the water as you describe, it's not physically possible. It's simply fluid dynamics and reflections. Nothing more.
TheDeadlyAvenger 2 months ago
@TheDeadlyAvenger That may be so. But take into account that Kubrick shot the river of blood countless times. (4:11). He may have done so to make this mistake occur on purpose just like all the huge continuity errors in the rest of the movie.
VikTalks 2 months ago
@TheDeadlyAvenger If you look at the sliding of the door it first opens quickly then pauses then opens further. The door, as demonstrated in the shot of Ullman leaving an elevator, is not mechanical. It is operated manually by a person pulling it open. A manual door opening on it's own is physically impossible. So yes, it is something more.
robag88 1 month ago
@robag88 - The river of blood elevator is a prop, so how the real one opens is irrelevant, also, for something 'drop out' and land where it alledegly did, and not be affected by the force of the flow, must mean it's quite heavy, which contradicts where it would have landed, it would be much closer to the opening. So I'm definately in the camp of people are looking for something that simply isn't there. Classic Rorschach syndrome.

ethanwc 3 months ago
@ethanwc It's a 33 year old film and many people who worked on it are dead or retired. Also SK used minimal crew and rarely told his crew what he was up to on set. Biographies quote many collaborators explaining that he often seemed to be up to things that he wasn't saying. I did go to the SK archives in London and found a lot of material verifying other subliminal themes, but there's hardly anything there about the blood river shot.
robag88 1 month ago
looking more at it, it looks like a 'slide' on teh left, maybe for the blood to come down and be directed toward the left wall other wise it would poor out directly down hall, but , then it looks like dark space under the 'slide' , but there is something that almost looks crouching down to the right of the 'slide' structure. more i watch it the more it stands out.

TheSoftGlimmer 3 months ago
@TheSoftGlimmer I'd go with that. He was probably trying to get a shot where the body (if it is a body) is slightly visible, but only on close observation.

did you seen the guy who made a video answering your question...Its a reflection in the blood. I think you are choosing the right films though for rigorous analysis. What I find most interesting in the Shining (among many things) is the doubling in the film and Freud's notion of the Uncanny executed so very well. The use of mirrors and the twins and the symmetrical shots of Halloran all being key in this area. Keep up the good work. I enjoy anyone discussing The Shining.
jaredneedsalife 3 months ago
@jaredneedsalife Yes, the guy, whoever he is, has tried for months and months to discredit the idea of an object in the blood. Watch his 3D rendering again. His blood is as thick as treacle so it reflects. The blood in the film splashes like water ... that is except for the solid area highlighted in the video. Why would a small area at the point of impact with the floor reflect while the rest doesn't? Only a large bubble could do that, but the shape lasts too long to be a bubble

nignaggin1219 3 months ago
While the elevator can appear face like, there is no object. The reflection shines off the wall and off the blood, that compared with the slow motion camera work and the viscosity of the liquid, it appears to shape itself. Think of when a faucet is turned partially on, the water seems to dance and make shapes that you can project whatever you want onto. Because fluid doesn't react the same way or duplicate movement exactly as planned, that can have something to do with the constant reshots.

Have you ever heard the saying "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?" I don't think that an 8 minute video should be dedicated to such a minuscule detail. You're treating it as if this is the key to knowing what The Shining is truly about.
slimbond227 3 months ago 2
@slimbond227 Yeah funny that Freud came out with that one, but he saw cocks everywhere lol.
You think I'm treating this as if it is the key to knowing what The Shining is all about. Far from it. Watch my video on Spatial Anomolies in The Shining. there's a lot more to the film than a hidden object in a river of blood.
robag88 3 months ago
@robag88 I have seen your Spatial Anomalies video and you are absolutely right. That video showed how in depth the film actually is. Sometimes, your analysis become a little too inane. When I saw this video in my subscription box, I thought "8 minutes on something in the elevator? Oh no, he's gone over the deep end."
However, I do want to mention that I did like how you reckoned the elevator to being Danny's mouth with Tony living in it. I am still a big fan and watch every video.
slimbond227 3 months ago
for sure not a fluke, intentional. really like the tony theory, but also like the hotel "owning" ullman. the hotel seems to be alive in of itself in a way, and thought perhaps a possible third theory would be the "literal" veins of the hotel opening, but discredit this third due to the hotel winning in the end anyway.. the object looks like a roll of carpet with a person in it to me, meant to interpret something else, an obvious point for discussion...
stragsd 3 months ago
I'm guessing it was an aid of some kind to get the blood to flow in a certain direction and get a more dramatic look as opposed to it hitting the floor and not doing much beyond flowing forward along the floor, or at least something less dramatic than the final shot shows.
filterguy2525 4 months ago
If there is something there it is very subtle. The reflections on the blood actually serve to mask whatever is there rather than highlight it. My suspicion is that whatever it was was rigged to make the blood flow more how Kubrick wanted it and might not have been meant to be seen at all. It may have been a pipe carrying fake blood that just fell down of course.

i think that the object represents that the hotel "owns" ullman. during this part of the film every other named character was who had been present in the overlook was there except ullman
wellingtonwaterloo1 4 months ago
Also I just thought about the reference to the elevator doors being manually opened. The door that Mr. Ullman opens is a layer of two with a scissor grate. The elevator here only shows one and plus if the doors were meant to be open by hand where is the handle on the outside? I think the scene of Mr. Ullman opening the door wasn't meant to be noticed in-detail and that having him open the door was just easier than rigging up a automatic opening door.
Jadama0 4 months ago
My first thought as I tried to identify the object was that it looked like an old 35mm stills camera. Like one Kubrick might have worked with as a photographer for Look magazine. It would have fit a similar analysis of the Monolith in 2001 as being the movie screen turned on its side. In this case, the camera is part of the violence. But the scale of the set was not that small. Is it an object to make a good splash? Also there were elevator attendants who would sit in the old days.
AlfredsVisions 4 months ago
Kubrick did pay attention to detail and was involved in the editing. Off topic, why does he allow a clear shot of the shadow of the helicopter in the opening credits? Bottom right...

This is seriously creepy. It would be amazing if there was some explanation behind it but I think it could just be a mistake. After all, at the start of the Shining there's a mistake where you can clearly see the shadow of the helicopter in which they were filming the aerial shots. Unless that was left in deliberately as well?
KateBushFan88 5 months ago
re. the mirror view in the Danny and Tony scene - there's some things like the shot of Jack and Wendy (i think when she brings breakfast on a tray) when it's filmed in a mirror view - the writing on his shirt is backwards, and then also more obviously of course the Redrum mirror writing.

Kirke182 5 months ago
@Kirke182 Yes there's definitely a cut at that point, but the mystery still remains regarding what the object is in the blood. also, have you noticed the furniture moves around completely unrealistically in the red shot?
robag88 3 months ago
@robag88 It's two hoses in a brace, They are facing away from each other and the one on the right is clearly spewing blood,
Kirke182 3 months ago
@Kirke182 A lot of people here are seeing what I'm seeing - a body. Why make it flesh toned? Why not alter the lighting so that it's not visible? Why even have a hose in that part of the shot in the first place when gravity will suffice? And why did SK do multiple takes, each time claiming "It doesn't look like blood."? And most of all why have a river of blood shot in the first place when it wasn't in the book? The symbolism of the door and dials as Danny's screaming face is certainly there.
robag88 3 months ago
Two hoses spewing fake blood at different angles to make all the splashing and gushing look fuller.
Kirke182 5 months ago
Now that i think about it.. The object flopping out of the elevator looks to me like one of three things... a large clot of blood, which could possibly be a subliminal thing about denial, a leech, which, as i noticed after watching the film again - Wendy seems to become almost lethargic as the film goes on, while Jack grows more active, as if he's a leech removing energy from her. Or, the object could be a body in a body bag, which would tie in with other signs of Jack's violent tendencies.

2 then 3 then 2+3+2 = Ouuuuups!!!! ROOM 237
ni33de 5 months ago
@ni33de Yeah I know what you mean. i've argued with numerology interpretations like that for years, but the difference is those can be mathematically proved to be there by chance. Carol Vorderman would get 237 out of almost any arbitrary set of numbers. But if you examine the details of this scene it doesn't add up as being a sluice. It's flesh toned. Jets would have to be used at the side alcoves to create a symmetrical upward splash, which would make an elevator sluice redundant.
robag88 3 months ago
If you pause at 0:55 the blood seems to be running down a slide or something similar and the object in question could be a run off for the blood
lloydduggan92 5 months ago
OMG you people are so stupid it's just two hoses to make the fake blood pour more powerfuly and faster to the camera.
SamanthaBgirl 5 months ago
@SamanthaBgirl Well no, you're stupid if you just jump to the simplest and easiest conclusion without thinking it out. First of all the object is flesh toned, if it was hoses they'd have colour matched it to the blood. Second they could have altered the lighting to make the object less noticeable. Third the upward splashing from the sides was undoubtedly done with pumps hidden behind the alcoves at the sides so it splashed up symmetrically, which rules out the need for pumps in the elevator.

Looks like a chair - it's something inanimate.
KutWrite 6 months ago
It does look like a body. I don't go for very abstracted symbolism in these things, but my first thought was of Grady's daughters - this is reinforced by the fact that the first elevator shot is cut through with shots of the girls, and by the fact that they're the most bloody and horrific victims in the film. Whether it was intended as such or not, I involuntarily imagine that the object is one of their bodies- which makes this scene even more unwatchable and effective.
boiledelephant 6 months ago
Rob, this is a very fascinating analysis you've made here. Your analysis of the human face in the elevator and Tony are very creepy. The CGI rendition of this lead me to believe it's a reflection, though. How could they retract the object so we couldn't see it once the blood settled?
I think the only way to be really sure is to find someone who worked on that set, on that shot and ask them, if they were willing to talk. Or go to the Archive and dig in to the files there.
PetersFerree 7 months ago 5
@PetersFerree The CGI rendition wasnt convincing for me. The creator makes the water as thick as treacle so as to create a reflection.
robag88 6 months ago
@robag88 No, Rob, I agree with you, there is definitely something in there. My girlfriend and I watched it frame by frame and it is without a doubt, obvious there is something in there. We could tell by a white speck that appears about halfway through the pour that doesn't move with the rest of the flow of the water. You can see the reflections on the blood, yes, but they move with the flow of the liquid, there is one speck that stays perfectly still as the blood cascades over it.
PetersFerree 6 months ago
@robag88 We believe this is a spreader, used to force the movement of the blood evenly against both walls. I think a corpse is unlikely as it would hinder the flow of the blood, acting as a dam that would cause erratic splashing. However, I love your analysis of this being Tony and the elevator mirroring Danny's face. Maybe the spreader was made up to look like a body? I don't know, but there is definitely something in there. Nice find.

I would agree with many people here, this is probably just an item meant to help the blood flow in a cooler manner. It's probably not meant to be anything, although, wollclark is right, it really does remind me on a body for the first few seconds.

@J20M07 Clearly someone is butthurt that they're not smart enough to notice small details in films on their own!

@J20M07

It looks to me like a rather large, disproportionate head with shoulders falling out of the elevator along with the blood.

Love your interpretation. Kubrick's films demand additional viewings, and I've only seen them once each lol
thumbswayup 7 months ago

I think it does look like a body, turned away from us so we can't see the face. I have seen the movie many times and never saw that before. Creepy.

you should see this explanation, its OWNS this video xD
however, i do agree with everything else you covered here, you know, with tony, the mirror, the dials and doors and whatnot
spardante2000 7 months ago
this was filmed on a miniature set....and slowed down and extended the frams to mke it appear in slow motion, in real life the scene was over n just a about a second. it would be impossible to hide something like that, then make it appear, then hide it again. especially on a miniature set. its merely a reflection
