I think Julian understands that John had a bunch of things going on that made it very hard for him to be a great dad. It's no excuse, but the fact that John was an orphan himself, combined with the crazy fame and wild scene of those days, combined with the divorce, makes a really difficult situation. Also I think John saw Yoko in Sean and himself in Julian...which made it more difficult to look at Julian.
I love John and was so great to Sean a great dad to Sean but when I heard him say I love you too sweetheart it made me think how bad Julian might have wanted to hear those words and how bad he wanted to mean as much to John as Sean did...

From what I understand, John was a good father to Julian when he was actually there. He was remote and intimidating, but when he was with May Pang he was more of a father. Still, it was awkward for both and it can be best described as a learning relationship. Neither Julian or John knew anything about each other and lived across an ocean from each other. It was probably very awkward for both.
In some ways, sure he was. His attitude immediately following the breakup of The Beatles was pretty self indulgent and rude, but again I think that was his defense from the world and that he was, inside, a good man. He was psychologically ruined after his mother was killed. After that, his life was over in many respects.

Further, Julian got to appear on John's Walls and Bridges and Julian's got quite a bit of attention over the years because of his father. So it certainly hasn't hurt to have an icon as a father nor was John your absentee parent. I think it's safe to say if he wasn't related to John we wouldn't be talking about him.

Then John and Sean talk about dying from the sun, John says " You're body dies, but your spirit is very much alive, in the spirit realm.." (referencing death and the afterlife)

Ok so... he tells Sean that when you die, you become a spirit. But he had also said once, quite a while before this that he believed in reincarnation. Just like sometimes he would claim he didn't believe in God, and sometimes he said he somewhat did. He had a hard time making his mind up, didn't he?

From what I understand, John was a good father to Julian when he was actually there. He was remote and intimidating, but when he was with May Pang he was more of a father. Still, it was awkward for both and it can be best described as a learning relationship. Neither Julian or John knew anything about each other and lived across an ocean from each other. It was probably very awkward for both.

In some ways, sure he was. His attitude immediately following the breakup of The Beatles was pretty self indulgent and rude, but again I think that was his defense from the world and that he was, inside, a good man. He was psychologically ruined after his mother was killed. After that, his life was over in many respects.

@NeilFraudstrong Yea there was a interview Julian did about John, he said he didn't really respect him as a father or a person as much as he wanted to, mostly cause he was far away and when he saw him, John would verbally get angry and yell at Julian for enjoying life. I don't know what was wrong with John but I still love him.

@dontleademsomuch There are quite of few photos of John with Julian (more so that with most celebs and their children) where are the photos of the other Beatles and their kids? Further, Julian got to appear on John's Walls and Bridges and Julian's got quite a bit of attention over the years because of his father. So it certainly hasn't hurt to have an icon as a father nor was John your absentee parent. I think it's safe to say if he wasn't related to John we wouldn't be talking about him.

This is so trippy....John and Sean first talks about their birthdays, the next year, when John turns 40 (the age when he dies). Then John and Sean talk about dying from the sun, John says " You're body dies, but your spirit is very much alive, in the spirit realm.." (referencing death and the afterlife)
