although i speak hakka at home but i think hakka entertainment is only meant for older generations and rural areas. in Malaysia, Chinese youngsters listen to Cantonese/Mandarin songs, these are the mainstream entertainment besides the national language (Malay).

hi Ji Dua Ren, Im a Hakka from Sabah Malaysia. Generaly, the Hakka society in Sabah especially around KK city speaks the common Sin On Hak. Under Sin On Hak, branch out Taipu Hak, Chaupu Hak,Moiyin Hak and etc.. all these are intelligibly with one another. The taiwanese hakka and hongkong hakka sounded slightly different because the influence of the main language there. In KK Sabah however, most chinese here speak hakka at home and mandarin at school. So the Hakka here changed very little.

Now it is known as shenzhen china. before this known as Bao'an later Xin'an changed back to Bao'an and now Zhenzhen county. it was part of hongkong on mainland china under british rule. That's why hakka pronunciation in hongkong much similar to hakka in sabah due to their same origin.

The guy with the shorter hair seems to be speaking something like Hong Kong Hakka, whilst the other probably memorised/learned for the script (like his mother - rather staggered and unnatural).
I've only heard this one and the other that's on youtube...although I did hear an woman say one word/phrase in Hakka in an old Jackie Chan film I think it was. Some coppers were running past asking her if she saw someone and she replied in Hakka saying she didn't understand them...I felt a sense of pride.

I don't know the movie but I see these HK Actors speaking mandarin and if this movie is a HK production and the story is in the New Territories then the people should speak cantonese intstead of Mandarin if they are not the hakka's in the story.Peace.
I really wish there is a TV show that will teach us to speak various Chinese dialects in Taiwan and China, since most of us already can speak Mandarin. As a native of Zhejiang province living in USA, I still have no chance of learning my ancestors' dialect and I'm still struggling to find someone who can teach me Zhejiang dialect. Wish me luck.
I think this film is orignally in Cantonese with some parts in Hakka. The version now is the Mandarin version for Taiwan, Singapore market but the non-Cantonese parts stay

Actually, Hakka is an eastern dialect of the Cantonese language.
The Sichuan dialect is different from Beijing dialect (Standard Mandarin) but the Sichuan dialect is classified as a Mandarin dialect.

Is it just poor Hakka or is it a dialect of Hakka so it just sounds a bit different? I still understand it but it sounds a little odd.

Hmmm. The original must be Cantonese because these all are HK actors. The hakka part with the granny is not dubbed because she must speak hakka! Man, I hate it when they dub. Ngai he hakka ngien!!!

It is not dubbed. The actor, although not Hakka, spent a great deal of effort learning Hakka for this movie.

Hello dix2007, I meant the dubbing into mandarin. I don't know the movie but I see these HK Actors speaking mandarin and if this movie is a HK production and the story is in the New Territories then the people should speak cantonese intstead of Mandarin if they are not the hakka's in the story.Peace.

i only know Law Lan (the old lady on the phone who is also sang yat) is not hak ka, she is from Pun Yue/Guangzhou.

It is quite common for non-Hakkas, especially older generation, in New Territories to be able to speak Hakka, due to the great no of Hakkas there.

I really wish there is a TV show that will teach us to speak various Chinese dialects in Taiwan and China, since most of us already can speak Mandarin. As a native of Zhejiang province living in USA, I still have no chance of learning my ancestors' dialect and I'm still struggling to find someone who can teach me Zhejiang dialect. Wish me luck.

I think this film is orignally in Cantonese with some parts in Hakka. The version now is the Mandarin version for Taiwan, Singapore market but the non-Cantonese parts stay

Because the settings is in New Territories of Hong Kong. As many as half of New Territories population are Hakkas.
