Obama is pretty effective at PR, he was a lawyer after all, and given all the shit he's currently trying to cover up or sweep aside or play down it's pretty clear that he will spend the rest of his term playing the role of defense lawyer to a very guilty United States of America.

Torture aside, I have some degree of sympathy for some of these US government members who simply 'went along' with these illegal activities, despite their own objections.
When you're inside a closed system like that, it's very much like a cult. Everyone around you is doing it, and you start to doubt whether it's really wrong, or wrong enough to merit your objection.
The same case was seen at the Nuremberg trials after WW2. So many government and military persons just 'went along with it'.

But in the trials after WW2 many people got their sentences, especially if anything was found like e.g. SS, SA crimes or concentration camps, that could be held against that person. To go along or follow orders wasn´t an excuse for them.
But the victorious powers had to realize, that not every member of the NSdAP could be persecuted,
just like not every member of the Republicans can be held responsible for torture, but the ones that are directly involved in that crime.

I think there was a Milton(?) study, as to the effects of authority over someone's decision process.
It was learned that subjects were willing to do terrible things despite their own observed discomfort.
That aside, I would also like to ask what would happen to dissidents in a system like that? Would they just be allowed to leave? Or would something worse happen?
I can understand why they might have done it anyways, but they still have to make up for what terrible things they did.
