I remember reading about this process and the limit to the hole being how to get fresh air to the digger. Enjoy the videos and your perspective on things at a differrent economic level than myself.
200 ft. that's deeper than the Greens burg, KS well is that well still in existence? The Greensurg well is billed a the worlds largest hand dug well. 32' in diameter 106' deep. Needed a lot of water for the trains. google for it I wished youtube allowed URLs
I have spoken to a number of well diggers that did it by hand, but his is the deepest on record around these parts. Hope to get other old timers to allow me to share their stories, but many fear being bothered.
Please do more of those kinds of videos. I love to listen to the old timers tell stories about how things were back in the their day. Kids today don't know what hard work is.

Well they just survived, air did get to be a problem, but life was not worth much, and
people taking risks were common place, yes some did die in such activities.
this ol boy speaking is the salt of the earth, nicer man, I have never met.

problem is many of people either fear or avoid camera. will talk your leg off until I turn on the camera
and of course legal permission is a must. but with that problem I hope to this fall when my work slows.

this interview is one of dozens I have, but so many of the old timers as you call them refuse
to allow me to publish, it is for their own kids, but I am working on the problem.

I guess you are lucky to have soil that will allow you to dig over 200 feet.
Where I am now, a well would probably collapse in less than 20 feet, except that you would hit solid rock before you got down 20 feet.

Will ask him next time I visit. still shakes me to think of being down a hole 200 feet
filling a bucket of dirt, plus riding up and down on a rope in the bucket. I do fear tight
places!!!!

Wish I had asked him, but assume that someone like my mother a water witcher found it.
she was paid to find water using a y shaped stick, dang if she wouldn't find water. I tried and
never got no where with that form hunting. There are a lot of places in south west NE> there just
aint no water underground.
