Zu seiner Verteidigung hat er kaum Fehler gemacht...und ich weiss das, weil ich Amerikaner bin und nicht irgendein Deutscher, der meint, dass er super Englisch sprechen kann und deswegen andere Leute kristisieren kann. Ich meine auch, dass er sich so britisch angehört, weil er halt Englisch so gelernt, und wenn es dein Ziel war, ihn peinlich zu machen, dann war es echt ein peinlicher Versuch.

Hi Thomas,

I found this very interesting. The shift of Berlinerisch from Ich > Ick, follows the Dutch shift in the same direction and is part of the journey towards 'I' in english.

Also the conflation (='merging together' in English) of the cases and the contraction of Pronouns/Verbs makes Berlinerisch sound more English than hochdeutsch!

Your example of 'Gibste mir dit Buch da', is 'Give me that book there' which is closer than 'Gibst Du mir dass Buch da'.

In Scotland we say 'ch' like the way we pronounce 'Loch', but usually when an English person tries to pronounce it they say 'lock' but that's because a Loch in England is a lake. Interesting as well licht in German is the same in old Scots we would say 'licht' too. but we would say nicht here meaning night, where as I know in German nacht is night ;o)

In fact, this special phrase isn't used by Berliners. No real Berliner would say "Fleesch", they're using the correct form "Fleisch".

It origins from the Rhineland, where the people often dislike the "Berliner Schnauze". Primarily to affront the Berliners, because of their "pride" to be real Berliners.

Habe Verwandte in Bonn, und jedesmal, wenn die mitm Berliner in Kontakt kamen, fiel der Spruch. Als ich nachfrug, warum'se das immer sagen, meinten sie, das hätten sie von ihren Eltern und das wäre uralt.

Lebe derzeit in NRW und hier schallts mir immer entgegen "Ick ma, Ick ma, een Berlina".. (komischer Spruch, aber nunja..)
