Blame BIG"OIL, BIG TOBACCO, anything BIG (been listening to the lamestream-press too much) that you want, but I had one of these engines and had nothing but trouble with it. Rebuilt it with the best parts - best machining, but it wasn't long and the heads cracked between each spark plug hole. Faulty design, so blame it on anything big, unless you want to blame BIG GM!!
The heads always crack on these engines. My engine has D3A casts, and it runs just fine with cracks between all pairs of valves, and cracks in all the pre chamber caps. So far, this engine has done nothing but impress me. My Cadillac gets ~30 MPG with a light foot, which is better than my buddy's Civic. The only complaint I have is the lack of power over 60 MPH.
@KrankieV2 i know gm makes the cheapest crap ever just to make money, oh hey lets take our 350 put glow plugs in it and expect it to hold up to the pressures of diesel fuel, i bet ford didnt think of that lol they make the worst engines ever
@1990fordf150custom Its actually a whole lot beefier than the 350 gasser. The mains are fucking huge, and block is bigger, the connecting rods are thicker, the pistons are stronger and the block has a 3rd hole above the camshaft for the injector pump. There is no way a 350 gasser would hold up under 22:1 comp ratio
@1990fordf150custom yeah they still sucked but if it was a gasser converted it would have grenaded upon startup. The reason why it ran lopey was because it had a flex plate on it.
they are known to leck there iv had six of 350 diesels and they all did the same thing 24 & 1/2 to 1 is right if you put ur finger on the hole with the spark plug out it will suck ur finger down in, clean OFF

@1997FordProbeGT whats wrong with the oldsmobile 5,7 diesel V8 ? whats the problem? pistons? crankshaft? pump? overheating? or is it just becuse its a diesel?
@Skid00everest340 they have design flaws, too few head bolts, early D block models had crank bolts breaking, camshaft failures, pump fails more often now due to low sulfur diesel, head cracks often, just a problematic engine. DX blocks still had heads cracking, it still ate the head gaskets, same pump problems
@Skid00everest340 The early diesels had head bolts that were too small, and all of them had too few to secure the heads down. Head gaskets were a poor design, and the big one was a lack of a water/fuel seperator in the fuel system. But with time and a small, but dedicated following of people who like these things, all, and I mean all, of the issues got ironed out. These engines are not as bad as most people think. When it was introduced, Americans were not ready.
@earsneyes43 D blocks also had weak crank cap bolts that would sometimes break, which would cause the entire crankshaft to break and shoot out the block. Another problem is the pump's seals are eaten away by the new diesel fuel of today. Finally these had become notorious for cracked heads. This one in particular had crack heads, bad head gaskets(no coolant used), bad pump, bad head bolts and crank cap bolts, worn camshaft, small injector pump leak, and really bad rings.
@FordNissanChevy It's a GM thing; it seems that once they get all the bugs worked out of a design, they kill it. The DX's were not bad; I could imagine what this motor would have been like with a proper turbo system. The 4.3 V6 diesel was mocked up experimentally with a tuned intake and exhaust by GM, and it ran as fast, if not faster than the gasser.
@earsneyes43 This one is a DX block, but the head issues went solved by GM. Also i think the EPA killed the GM diesels, except the 6.2/6.5T truck diesel
@FordNissanChevy I don't think it was the EPA as much as Big Oil, because if diesel cars were developed here in the US like they were in the world market, and the buyers were educated on the virtues of diesel versus gas, we probably won't be where we are right now. Look at the VW and Benz diesels that were sold at the same time the Olds was. One was too small, the other too expensive. Both were good.
@earsneyes43 A set of ARP head bolts or studs and modern design head gaskets solve the head gasket blowing issue, and a water/fuel seperator handles the rest. Driven right, these engines will produce 30 mpg or better in a full size luxury car. Slowly, but surely.
these 350 olds diesel engines are good if taken care of like they need a water seperator and such the biggest killer of these engines was nobody waited for the glow plugs to warm up and would just take off down the road and when you drive these motors far most people would just put the car into park and shut the motor off your supposto let the engine iddle for atleast a minute then shut it down !!
i need the diesel injector for 350 5.7 old mobile.

@FordNissanChevy they still didnt hold up well at all, they have alot of major problems, ive seen two stroke detroits run smoother than that engine

@midnitesquirldog This goes for virtually ALL diesels. Especially if it's a TURBO diesel. Hence the invention of a turbo timer.
