I love this song, and Stephanie J. Block! Even though the new song might "fit better" this one is amazing as well. I think it makes Elphie sound more sure of herself and intelligent. But "The Wizard and I" is amazing as well :)

@michellez101 This is from her personal album. She was actually the very first Elphaba in the workshops. So a few years ago she contacted Stephen Schwartz and asked him if she could put this song in her album.

The style of this piece sounds much more like the styles found in Pippin, which I find funny. It's a good song, but does not suit Wicked in my mind. Nonetheless, Stephanie J. Block does a lovely job singing it!

I can't help but feel that this song is FAR better than the Wizard and I. I'm not crazy about the lyrics, but those could be changed. The actual song itself just sounds much better to me. Unfortunately it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the songs in the show.

@lala1account that's what i thought. I like both songs and wouldn't say its far better than the Wizard and I (my opinion) but the whole style doesn't fit to the Musical. I think they should have shortened the version and put it somewhere short before leaves or something like that.

in my opinion this should still be in the show. ive listened to the full workshop and it was very different and some pieces should have been kept in i.e. the workshop's version was a lot more like the book which i liked but some parts i am really happy they took out cause they kind of weighed down the musical from being as good as it could. do you know what i mean?

Stephanie was first read for elphaba in the workshops and at that point was prob gonna follow the show to broadway. The producers after seeing idina auditioned they thought a bigger name would be better for the musical's press cuz of rent and aida so idina replaced steph in the workshops to sanfran to broadway steph stook with the show and was ensamble and us for elphaba and then got the role of liza minelli in the boy from oz then orginated elphaba on tour

Actually, a lot of Wicked was written for Stephanie J Block because she was on the project for Elphaba first, and then later she left and Idina came in. So Wizard and I was for Idina but a lot of it was NOT (of course she did it well anyhow)

SJB wasnt in the original broadway cast, she understudied Idina when it first started in San Francisco (before opening on broadway) but then she got a lead in Boy from Oz and did that instead.

Before Idina came Stephanie tested the songs and Stephen Schwartz wanted Stephanie, but the producers wanted someone with a name. So they brought Idina in and offered Stephanie understudy.
