I think they could've put it right after Morrible tells her the wizard wants to see her before "One Short Day". I prefer "The Wizard and I" though, honestly.
@1christiel Ohhhh that makes more sense. It fits well there, but it sort of seems like overkill to have a song in that spot at all. It would be crammed between "I'm Not That Girl" and "One Short Day."
I love this song, and Stephanie J. Block! Even though the new song might "fit better" this one is amazing as well. I think it makes Elphie sound more sure of herself and intelligent. But "The Wizard and I" is amazing as well :)
oh. thank god they replaced this. so trite annnnnd boring...... geez i really love dnacing thru life and wizard and i better than the originals. i think makind good and which way is the party are tooo "dated" sounding. like theyd b from an older musical. SJB has an awesome voice tho.
@michellez101 This is from her personal album. She was actually the very first Elphaba in the workshops. So a few years ago she contacted Stephen Schwartz and asked him if she could put this song in her album.
The style of this piece sounds much more like the styles found in Pippin, which I find funny. It's a good song, but does not suit Wicked in my mind. Nonetheless, Stephanie J. Block does a lovely job singing it!
I can't help but feel that this song is FAR better than the Wizard and I. I'm not crazy about the lyrics, but those could be changed. The actual song itself just sounds much better to me. Unfortunately it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the songs in the show.
@lala1account that's what i thought. I like both songs and wouldn't say its far better than the Wizard and I (my opinion) but the whole style doesn't fit to the Musical. I think they should have shortened the version and put it somewhere short before leaves or something like that.
what song is this called? like did u know the song: the witch of the east where nessarose sings it! that song is only in the show but not in the soundtrack...but how do u know this song was in the pre production?
I think this is a great song, and as usual Steph does a fantastic job. It's a shame it was cut from the show. It fits nicely with all the other music.
in my opinion this should still be in the show. ive listened to the full workshop and it was very different and some pieces should have been kept in i.e. the workshop's version was a lot more like the book which i liked but some parts i am really happy they took out cause they kind of weighed down the musical from being as good as it could. do you know what i mean?
Stephanie was first read for elphaba in the workshops and at that point was prob gonna follow the show to broadway. The producers after seeing idina auditioned they thought a bigger name would be better for the musical's press cuz of rent and aida so idina replaced steph in the workshops to sanfran to broadway steph stook with the show and was ensamble and us for elphaba and then got the role of liza minelli in the boy from oz then orginated elphaba on tour
shes too powerful for this song i reckon. its like a heavy metal singer singing to bob the builder. no matter how awesome they are it just aint gonna work. sjb's twai on the other hand...AWESOME!!!
Yeah because she originated the part on Broadway. She was the first Elphaba. If Stephanie had been the original Elphie she would have won the Tony as well!
@ozzuilgug they wanted a more well known name to get the show off the ground...they had to recoup almost $14 million in the first year cuz it cost so much to produce
I think they could of kept this in...maybe made a scene where they showed Elphaba packing to go to the Emerald City and having NEssa being upset Elphaba is leaving her and having Elphaba singing this to her to explain why she is going (with some lyrical changes :)
Actually, a lot of Wicked was written for Stephanie J Block because she was on the project for Elphaba first, and then later she left and Idina came in. So Wizard and I was for Idina but a lot of it was NOT (of course she did it well anyhow)
SJB wasnt in the original broadway cast, she understudied Idina when it first started in San Francisco (before opening on broadway) but then she got a lead in Boy from Oz and did that instead.
Before Idina came Stephanie tested the songs and Stephen Schwartz wanted Stephanie, but the producers wanted someone with a name. So they brought Idina in and offered Stephanie understudy.
I love this much more than the Wizard and I, though I do agree that it doesn't fit the whole play as well. But just as a song, this one is better in my opinion. And Stephanie owns this song. I love Idina, and she's my favorite Elphaba, but on this song, Block outshines her, I think.
I think if it was her and not Idina as the first elphie... this song may still be in the play because he wrote hte wizard and I to allow for a build up for Idina to belt at the end.
Although I love hte wizard and I - I love this too.
it sounds very "Sondheim"ish in some part, and i like it because of that. i would've been fine with either this or the wizard and i, witch isn't my favorite song from the show. its only okay. ireally like this one though.
if i ever produced a production of Wicked id try to get both songs. with the cutting of that segment at the beginning this song could easily go after im not that girl and before one short day
