hey im trying to do something similar to this with cs4. i don't know what version you used in this tutorial, but when I add the spherize filter it gives me a completely different effect. When you play with the amount it gives a curve to the edge of the map and makes it look more 3d and realistic. When I add the effect, it just bubbles out the center of the selection and doesn't give me that rounded edge that you get. My edges stay exactly the same, it just adds a fisheye like bubble. any advice?
As a beginner teaching myself, I'm glad you have not used shortcuts everywhere - because I don't remember them! As I get better, then I'll try and use them, but to begin with it's really handy having learning videos like this explained step by step.. Thanks very much for your time and tutorials!
Great video! Love watching your tutorials. Have only had photoshop a few months and have learned tons from your vids. Keep up the great work and many thanks!
How would you suggest going about applying the fold effect when you want to do both horizontal and vertical folds? I've been trying to use this method and alternating black/white but it doesn't come out looking right.
Can you reverse the way in which the image appears by having the center panel brought to the background and the 2 wings of the folded paper brought to the forground? Then the 2 outside panels would look as if they will fold up and over to the center as opposed to being flipped backwards behind the center panel? Would simply reverse the colors of white and black to accomplish this?
Very awesome tutorials. Thanks for taking he time to do these. I have tried a few and they turned out great, you make it easy to follow your directions.

omg
do you really create layers that way? do you really deselect that way?
btw, to duplicate one or multiple layers quickly: select them in the layers panel, hold down Option on a Mac or alt on a pc an drag them upwards until a thick black line appears. then let go
@Robbinski14 - OMG do you really ask questions like that? do you really think everyone should use Photoshop the way you do?
btw, some people are old school Photoshop pros and like the non shortcut way of doing things. For the purpose of tutorials it's always best to show the non-shortcut way of doing things so that novices can remember where things are in the menu pallete.
i think to further enhance the effect, instead of using white fill, we can use a colour almost similar but lighter to the one in the photo. in this case, light brown.
Nice! I've learned more in the last 5+ minutes of this video about PS than I have in the past 5 weeks fumbling on my own. Thanks Gavin, much appreciated!
good job as always. I can't stop to think that it might have looked better had you used black to transparent for all three panels, instead of the white to transparent for the middle one. nevertheless nicely done!
I like your process. I was thinking you would use warp to get the 3d look from the folds. It'd give more control over the outside curve. Or after using your filter, a bit of liquify would work seeing as how you had a solid background.

One thing you'll learn with time is Photoshop is full of choices. There is no right or wrong way, if you end up at where you want to be.
For example you could have said CTRL+J will duplicate the active layer and CTRL+D will deselect.
So why don't I use those in my videos? Because I choose not to.
