TAS works by having the emulator slow the game down so you can do each frame one at a time, and you can save at any time and go back to any frame. For reference, there's usually about sixty frames in one second of actual gameplay.
While it's slowed down like this, the player still needs to do all the input themselves, it's just a lot easier than playing in real time. It's not intended to be skillful, per se, but an example of how the game can be done perfectly. The movie is the art.
I know I said the player has to do all the button presses on there own, but that's not /entirely/ true. There are some automated button-pressing scripts, but few if any of them are designed to play the entire game. Usually they're intended for repetitive or common tricks. Only the simplest of games (dance dance revolution, for example) can be completely automated.
So wait, you're playing in slow motion to make it easier to pull off the tricks, which is pretty brilliant tactic, but still cheating.
Still, 36 minutes for 100% is INcredible.
I used to complete the game in about half an hour on the SNES, but never that fast with 100%: Bare minimum gear, go win!
I got to motherbrain one time (and beat her,) with so few energy tanks that the game wouldn't trigger the script to make the Super Metroid attack her, so then I had to start my speed run over.
i told my friends in the work about this speedrun. they said: fuck you you lie. at the next day. i asked him: you seen it? Friend: ... yes... his mind was fucked up xDD like mine ^^
@ShaunOfNintendo Simply put, you play the game at super slow speed (like, one pixel at a time) and abuse the hell out of savestates to overwrite any "bad" parts. You literally push the game to its limits and then some.
lol at how you jumped back through the door before the chozo actually got up to fight. my jaw dropped, hit the ground, dragged around for a while, and came back up.
The wall jumping was spectacular and getting the exiting the room before the Chozo statue came to life and before the door could close on you was astounding.
You have a normal health bar, and then you have your reserve tanks. If you run out of health on the normal bar, your reserve tanks will be used up (they're basically the same as energy tanks, just in reserve and they can be partially filled). You can have up to 4 if you can find them all. Check your pause menu to see how much reserve energy you have.
@Videogamemasterz He just asked how I did the trick where I make a bomb spread (by morphing while charging my beam) in mid air. And I told him it is done by looking down and turning a<round in mid air, then pressing down again just as you have finished turning around.
@Videogamemasterz No it only requires extremely precision (you only have a window of 0.0167 seconds where you can press down even if you do everything else correctly). Therefore it is very hard to do it without tool assistance.
@Videogamemasterz It's probably a bit tricky to get the hang of at first, but still I don't think simply using it should be very hard (using it to complete complex games as fast as you can though takes a huge amount of work).
how u do that shit of speed i play the game i run not fast like u man..i need help in 8:03 that fucking part in fucking hard to cross help me out. pass me that speed so i can pass that shit of 8:03.
Hmm... every time I armpump as hard as I can on a slope on my Wii, I fall off of it, while you armpump 30 times per second and you don't fall of the slope. I just don't fucking get it.
@PrimedMetroid Because he's recording the button-presses on a frame-by-frame basis, allowing him to do that at half the frame-rate. He then just plays back the button-presses in real-time to make the video.
i have a question about something that i can't figure out. i understand that you are playing frame by frame, but how do you play when samus is out of frame such as at 8:05?
First I have RAM addresses that tell me which exact position I have, then of course I know how the part looks from having seen it before, so I have a good understanding of what is where. After that it's just trial and error.
The meaning of tool assisted speedrun is that he uses glitches, Frame Advance, and more to get the job done in the shortest amount of time possible...He does a great job of it, but it's not your traditional speed run. These are built for challenge and entertainment. The TAS community is all about breaking each other's records. I want a 100% run in 5 minutes. =D
