Nice interview and great music for a lone cloudy/rainy day. I love unstable weather and this is a perfect tribute to storms! Hail to the Thunder Gods!
Let that be a lesson to all you punks who buy 5 and 6 six string basses when you can't even play a 4 string at all. Marcus, Victor, and Wooten all play 4 string basses. I love these younger kids who buy the 5 and 6 string basses and can't play shit.
@bassphantom94 Personally when I see a 5 or 6 string bass, it really turns me off, but when I see a guy who has a 4 string and he's been around for years, you just know he's a warrior. Stanley, Marcus, & Victor are elite examples of just what I am talking about.
The reason I play a six is because of all these people who like to drop tune their guitars, it is much easier than say constantly changing the tuning and setup of a 4 string bass, and also I want to solo a little I have the head room to do so.
I was a long-time guitar player turned bassist because of Timmy C (RATM, Audioslave)... Back then I didnt have a bass but I tried to play it anyway on my guitar because i loved it so much. It was frustrating playing bass on a guitar but I still kept on going anyway because of Marcus Miller. Then I bought my first bass (a Jazz bass) because of Jaco Pastorius and Colin Greenwood (Radiohead)... And now I'm taking bass lessons and my teacher told me about SMV. So here I am. SMV you're a godsend!!!!
I use a 6 string Ibanez Sound Gear (which is an awesome bass), Obviously the highest strings are A, D,G,C...but as for Stanley it appears he pops all or most of his notes, i dunno if he uses lighter strings but true enough he does have a fancy bass with all type of switches
hm... interesting, i've heard he uses a piccolo bass. I tuned one of my basses (a regular long scale bass) tenor tuning once, but I couldn't get that sound (i used extra light strings). any suggestions? thanks fot the comment anyway ;-)
Clarke does use piccolo basses, he even "invented" them. But not in this song. How to achieve that sound while tuned to a tenor? well, i cant get that sound either, clarke uses custom alembic basses, he uses setups that are unusual for a regular bass player, sometimes more like a guitar player, he uses some kind of reverb, and he is stanley clarke :) I find when I use software modelling , like amplitube or GTR 3, I can get close to the sound using guitar-based presets.
@CptChaos88 No i am sorry its is not a piccolo bass. It is a tenor bass, meaninf an ordinary bass, tuned a quarter higher.
So the lowest string is an A just like your normal A string would be. so its A-D-G-C. Trust me , I am a clarke follower for 30 years, I met the guy twice ,seen his basses upclose ,and you can simply see it when he plays, the positions and the according that you hear, if you try play it yourself you'll be convinced:)
im a bass player an all i have to say to stanlely vic and marcus is show me please im dieing here when i heard this song i listen to it 30 times back to back and im still shook up im hurt that ive tryed so hard to play like that smv i need you guys bad Help
Man, killin'. I once went to a rehearsal and Marcus was there and the guy whose band I was in at the time jammed on "The Jam" by Larry Graham. Everyone's mouths were agape at these two guys (maybe 18 or 19 at the time) just killin'. The memory is forever etched in my brain. The other guy was Albert McDowell, one of the great under rated bassists of all time.
you guys keep talking about Stanley and Jaco being the godfathers what about James Jamerson the original influential bass player, James paved the way for everybody including Stanley and Jaco, he may not have been a soloist but James had some serious basslines and what about Larry Graham the inventor of slap you guys need to get your Bass history right
by far, Marcus Victor and Stanley are the three gods of bass. they stand miles above the others. but we can never forget the god father of bass Jaco (RIP).
I understand your love for Jaco, because I loved his playing as well. But if you say the "God Father" of solo bass then that would have to be Stanley Clarke. Stanley was three years ahead of Jaco as a solo bass victorious. He had 3 groundbreaking, highly acclaimed albums and was the yard stick for bass playing measurement at that time.
@ShangoDC I agree with you. Its so hard for some people to accept that there were people before Jaco who were better at the bass. I love Jaco, and I listen and love all jazz and always have, but I think as far as the bass goes, Jamerson is still on top.
@michigan21 Thanks. I know for fretless bass, Jaco made tremendous technical advancements and approaches to the instruments. For many he captured the essence of solo fretless bass, but Stanley was by far equal a bass player and musician. Stanley, for his contribution advanced the instrument lyrically and melodically like no one before or after. I love James Jamerson as well, he was the foundation of all the Motown music.
@ShangoDC I play fretless, and quite frankly you cant play the fretless without thinking about Jaco. Having grown up down the road from Detroit, I grew up obsessed with how Jamerson could groove like he did and gave motown its sound. There are alot of Bassist who are great. One thing people have to give credit to Stanley Clarke for is Longevity and his writing.
@michigan21 I totally agree with your statements, I would just add to Stanley's longevity and writing skills has also been his remarkable bass playing and fresh approach to the instrument itself.
the energy is so different in alot of black music. Hey Stanley, Marcus, Victor, Louis Johnson are the best around. jaco was good in his day. Nothing compared to what bass player are doing today. as far as Mark King his good and have listen to a lot of his playing, but there know soul or n?t grabbing playing. level 42 people are just looking at him play. Marcus is tuned normally , E-A-D-G, but in this song he uses hipshot , its a little switch that drops your E to a D. So then it would be D-A-D-G.

Is Clarkes bass smaller than Wooten's and Millers or does it just look that way because he's a big guy?
saksalainenreika 2 years ago
it's called piccolo bass. it's tuned 1 octave higher than a normal bass, (like a guitar).
it's basically like the first 4 strings of the guitar, but with the thick sound of a bass.
