@LifesTooShort52 This song dates from the 1820's whereas "Johnny Comes Marching Home" is from 1863 according to Wiki and they do share basic melodic material.
"The Ants Go Marching One By One" and "The Animals Went in Two by Two" both uses the tune
@einstein1984 In a perfect world there would be no need of war or force of will. However Karen Casey is not singing a salute to war here, she is telling of the after effects of war on those who make it home and more often than not it is the women eg. mothers, wives, sisters and daughters that are left to deal with this. To that end I think Karen Caseys tone voice and tone relay that very nicely. Good wishes. : )
This isn't a patriotic song, it's an anti-war song, It's about an Irishman fought for the East Indian company in (what is now) Sri Lanka, not his homeland. And it's from the perspective of a passerby meeting the soldier's wife, so it makes just as much sense for it to be sung by a woman.
@C17Y Dropkick version is better if you're just looking for something that fits their style. This version captures the tone better and captures the sadness meant to be in the message.
I heard Ryan's Fancy's version first, set to the tune of 'The Ants go Marching By'. I thought that was great (and it is) but I think the cheerful tune kind of spoils the mood.
This was beautifully handled by Karen Casey's voice, she does these sad songs perfectly.
Beautiful and true to the original. It's a shame how this anti-war song has been used to promote war. It's amazing how a haunting voice like this can really bring the tragedy of war home.
I adore this lady's singing but she's so good at "sad" and "mournful" I'm wondering if I could stand more than an hour of it without reaching for the Prozac ... or razor blades! Seriously though, she goes straight to the heart and through it. Such power... (I wonder if she is a sad person, or maybe sad/happy extremes as with bipolar personalities.)
My best friend--no, my brother--John is going to Afghanistan soon. This song really hits a spot when I listen to it. All I want is from him to come home alive.
@kikyouskiller he wont be your bestfriend\brother after he gets back just giving you a word of warning so it wont hit you as hard when the time comes.......
@gabe4mdema ...I don't know. I've tried really hard to get that boy to leave me alone for a good portion of my life. I don't think a stupid war can get rid of our relationship that easily.
@gldys45 whats it matter if barney likes more upbeat sounding music? the same point still gets a crossed and they still like the song and think this one is beautiful wish i also do
Pretty hard to say who did for it´s a folks song, so there are countless performeers. . .but would you mind telling me your opinion who did the original, dude? ;)
@GentleFist1 The original refers to the soldiers from Athy, County Kildare that fought in "Sulloon" and the author is unknown the first copy right versin wuz bob dylan 1960

This has to be one of the better Irish rebel songs. As a man who comes from the Athy mentioned in the song i have always had a special place in my heart for this song. Well done Karan.
Very touching, forwards some of the horror that the families of those going to war must have experienced - not to mention the sorrow and pity. It's a really good song.
Anybody else notice that it has the same basic tune as 'The Ants Go Marching In'? I'm sensing a connection... Maybe it's just me.

Great job! Normally I would criticize the waver in her voice, but it's what this song needs. It sounds like she's about to cry.

Definitely a depressing sort of person.
