This is a cool trailer. Curious if anyone has heard about the new sci fi book THE ICE GORILLA. Word has it producers are looking to turn THE ICE GORILLA into a movie right now. Has anyone heard differently.?.?
Although I respect your choice for top 1 (since your list had no bad Sci-Fi movies or shitty remakes we seen thirteen in a dozen nowadays) Star Wars is more a Fantasy movie than Sci-fi.
Star Wars was influenced by Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" storywise and Lucas himself has admitted it was an influence, especially the way the story was carried forward by two seemingly minor characters. The novel Dune was another influence (the desert planet, evil empire etc).
Although I have "Dr.Strangelove" as one of my all-time favorite movies, I wouldn't call it sci-fi. It was a very real possibility back in 1964 and besides, it's a cold war comedy (made in a time when WW3 nearly broke out in the Cuban Missile Crisis).
Back to James Cameron. The original Terminator is one of the best low budget movies ever made. T2 doesn't hold up to several viewings, and the dialogue is sophomoric at best.
I think "2010" deserved a spot on this list. Not too bad actually.
Great list. I personally think "Empire Strikes Back" is better than "Star Wars", and so does the critical consensus and the popular vote on Imdb (not that THAT says anything). The characters are better in Empire Strikes back and Yoda explaining what the Force is one of the high points of the trilogy. Not to mention the famous "No, I am your father!" (often misquoted).
Avatar is visually impressive, but Cameron lacks subtlety and everything is very black and white for him. It's merely decent.
Certainly some classic movies in there, but I'm not sure they all qualify as 'science fiction'. I can see quite a bit of Fantasy, Science Fantasy, Space Opera, Distopian Future, Science Horror, etc in there!
Hi Mokwella. Where would Enemy Mine, The Last Starfighter, Serenity, Star Trek IV and Superman-The Movie rank past your list?...just curious. I loved your picks BTW. I look forward to your next slideshow, my friend. Peace.
@TheRealman42 It's nice to see that Mokwella gets complaints about missing films too. Serenity, Star Trek IV and Enemy Mine are on my list, but you'll find others missing!
The Thing was awesome....but I love a lot of those other films too. Don't know how you would rank them unless you took many things into account and made some sort of algorithm lol.

@urbmatic i said that myself but it should be in a best horror list and this list did not mention sunshine or mission to mars or apollo 13 or cherry 2000 or bill and ted excellent or red red plant or black hole or city of lost children or eden log or attack of the 50 women or any other hammer movies with quartermass or steel dawn or the illustrated man or. many more .but its all personal preference ...ive seen better list and ive seen worse list
So Teen Wolf do you consider that a scifi movie it had Michael J. Fox in it also was a commedy to me also, other commedies with scifi, fantasy, action, or Superhero themes included Land of the Lost, Gremlins, Loaded Weapon, Airplane, Sky High, Zoom, My Super Ex-girlfriend, Somewhat even some of the Superman, Batman, and Spiderman movies with commedians such as Richard pyier, Jim Carrey and Bruce Campbell in them. King Kong remake with commedian Jack Black turned some of it to a commedy also.
@hydrolito So a movie can't be both? By that logic, you'd have to rule out Alien as horror and Terminator as action. Incidentally, IMdB lists three genres for Back to the Future, and comedy isn't one of them.
@seaturtlefilms I hated Ad for space balls so never saw it, Back to the Future to me was a commedy version of the Time Machine, and I enjoyed the Time Machine Better. Some commedies aspects of it I didn't like such as Doc's clocks being off, machine that over feed his dog, etc. I wouldn't consider it a bad movie. Star Wars certain commedy aspects I didn't like either and I enjoyed the Empire Strikes Back better which had less commedy. Some people classify S.W. as a Space Fantasy and not scifi.
@hydrolito I think that interesting scientific ideas can still be explored in a comedy, even if plausability is stretched for comic purposes. Good sci-fi can be also done as action, adventure, horror or straight drama. Often, the sci-fi elements take a back seat, of course.
@seaturtlefilms How IMdB couldn't list Back to the Future as a commedy is weird as it was more commedy than scifi, action adventure, or love story if those are the three you are talking about.
At 1:03 I remember when I watched this movie on a black and white TV during the 70s, when I was a kid. I was impressed much, I couldn't sleep that night! Also, an other favorite of mine during that era was the Space-1999 but that was a series, not a movie.
I'll buy this list. Mokwella, you have a very broad grounding in the classics but are able to compare them on an even field with more modern classics. You show no era chauvinism that I can see. Some bold choices here, but solid ones. Can't fault a thing!
Yeah, have to disagree. Star Trek (2009) was a real movie movie - something you needed to see in the theatre and that anyone could watch. Compared to that First Contact seemed like a really good expensive episode of the TV show, and it was almost indecipherable by non-Trekkies. That's why I rank it lower. As for Undiscovered Country -- to me it was sort of let down by how cheap the production was - and some really really bad acting.
A good list. It is good to see Dr Strangelove and The Man Who Fell to Earth well ranked. Well-chosen pictures, engaging music , and interesting use of titles.
Good choices. Empire probably holds up better than the Original Star Wars, but you have to give the first one points for having such a huge impact. The experience was better for me when I saw it that first time than any of the later movies in the series.
You're doing good stuff, mokwella. I also commented on your Star Trek-Iverson video, but ran out of room. Contact me through my blog (iversonmovieranch.blogspot.com) if you want to talk more about that.
I tend to agree - but without Star Wars (1977) there could be no Empire Strikes Back, so after going back and forth I put Star Wars Episode IV first. Although, I have to admit that's not a rule - since I rated Road Warrior higher than Mad Max.
@mokwella Road Warrior came out first with Character Max in it Mad Max was the sequel and I like Road Warriors better so I wouldn't fault you for putting it first. Indiana jones and the Temple of doom and any other Indian jones movies were sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark. When it came out on video they Retitled Raiders as Indiana Jones and the raiders of the Lost Ark, although Indiana Jones was not listed in the original title. Jurassic Park is alteration of Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Star wars...My favorite film its number 1!,good job dude!
