With freeweights (+150kg) you have to go all the way down or your knees will burst. They are weakest at 90degree angle. When you squat all the way down you practice more muscles, can lift more, and your knees will never suffer.
I guess when you use a ball or light weights, it doesn't matter that much.
This guy didn't bother mention foot width, didn't mention that the chest should be pushed outwardly, how many reps should be in an average set, or anything else a trainer should know. My goodness. I'm guessing this guy's not employed anymore?
@peterdonelle19 You can do squats with a chair, basically the same with what these guys tried showing you, but you're bending your knees slowly while hovering over the seat. Don't sit all the way down. And like they also mentioned in the video, keep your knees behind your toes and you should be sweet :)
knees over toes is accurate, if your knees are over your toes in a squat your knees are now taking the brunt of the load.. and the squat should always be a hip dominant movement.. knees to far forward prevents that from happening and endangers the back and doesent properly engage the hips , glutes, pelvis etc..
It depends on limb proportions. All that matters is that you are squatting with a full, dominant range of hip motion. if you still need to be deeper, increase the knee flexion to get the crease of the hip to pass below the knees (minimum depth), then so be it. At that point knees over toes is completely safe.
@savage3002 a deep squat is full range of motion. its not just for olympic lifters. you wouldn't have clients doing bench half way down or half a sit up...
@ravage1000 yeh i know, i was just being dramatic, but this is a basic squat technique that she is trying to teach, deep squat isnt the default squat.
@savage3002 More and more, studies, evidence, and our current understanding of the knee and basic Newtonian mechanics all suggest that 90 degrees is the worst place you can stop or reverse load in a squat. I don't think she has to go ass to grass. But I have to agree with Daniel and ravage and Egendomlighet and, I'm guessing, every third or fourth commenter since this video's upload...DEEEEEEEPER!!!!!! 90 degrees is the suck.
incorrect, the knees do travel over the knees in a proper squat. the extension of the medicine ball presents a center of gravity that will never exist without... a medicine ball. useless.
I see guys and gals training with medicine balls instead of weights all the fucking time in my gym and all i can say is "guys wtf are you wasting your time with that superficial crap for?"
I am by no means a strong guy. I can squat 100kilos for 5 reps. Gradually increasing the resistance puts muscle on your legs. Now show me a med ball that weighs 100k?
Medicine balls are for launching to develop POWER. Plus boxers use them to toughen up their guts.
knees over toes is only a problem with the following:
gluteal inactivity
squatting with toes straight forward
poor ankle flexibility
weight shifting off heels
90% of people have all of those problems and never address them, thus the knees over toes rule to basically bandaid a much larger biomechanical dysfunction
there is absolutely no mechanical reason why the knees cannot come forward past the toes. it will not magically make your kneecaps pop off.
a correct (below-parallel) squat keeps the knees safe via dynamic tension in the hamstrings; a mere parallel squat doesn't recruit the hamstrings as much. moreover, with a deep squat, for some people it is IMPOSSIBLE for the knees not to come past the toes. worry about depth and keeping your weight centered on your feet, not your knee position.
considering the leg muscles are the largest in the human body when doing a squat freestanding like that your ass can and should be lower than that to achieve a good quadrecept workout.
Whenever I do squats I cannot stop my knees going slightly past my toes. Using a medicine like the women in the video its possible But I find this almost impossible when squatting with a heavy weight on a barbell, I will fall backwards. Can someone please give me they advice?
@MasterIms yeah what people say about not letting the knees go past your toes... that only works if your only going parallel. but to do a squat the RIGHT way you should be going past parallel to get your hams into it! and you need proper muscle balance to avoid tearing any muscles! also if you keep your knees from going past your toes you take some stress off of them but increase the stress on your hips 10 fold! Its more natural to let them go past the knee, let your body do its thing ;)
start out with whatever you feel confortable with and work your way up from there with the number of squats you do. also don't do them fast because it doesn't do any good. Do them slow and you'll see its a good workout, nal68ol
I'd say the medicine ball is only about 5lbs. If you can't lift the medicine ball a basketball is fine.
It's the way the body automatically counterbalances the weight of the ball and your arms stretched out that put you in proper squat form.
She should be going a little deeper in the squats though, past parallel. This puts the weight on your hips instead of your knees. Hips are much stronger then your knees.
The medicine ball she is using is a 6lb. ball from Power Systems. It's not too challenging a weight load, but there are lighter weights available: 2lb and 4lb
