In the 17th century, English forces fortified a peninsula off Kingston in southern Jamaica and called it Port Royal. The strategic location of the town offered a beatiful natural harbor that was protected from storms and provided waters thirty-feet deep just yards from shore, sheltering up to 500 ships. In 1657, Governor Edward lured buccaneer captains away from Tortuga, which legally permitted them to raid Spanish ships and lands
