A music composer need not be an "awsome" singer, he's better in composing than singing. Otherwise why the hell is he composing music. Still he just showed his brilliant knowledge of the raag in this song. Amazing guy!

people, please think twice before commenting on a great musician like shekhar please! he's such a great singer and composer, whoever has a little knowledge about music, would easily understand how beautifully he sung the song, and would easily feel that there WAS profound feeling in his singing! and, one also should remember that he's a composer too, he sang it just coz he felt like singing, he didn't have any riyaz before singing it, n musarrat ofcourse had practiced it for thousands of time!

well we cnt realy compare shekhar with any other singer here as shekher is now not realy a singer he is a composer...so for sure he is nt putting up riyaz on his singing....so it wil b unfair to compare him with mussarat(who perhaps did one week riyaz before he sung this song)...

I agree. Creativity, originality, and improvisation skills make a classical or semiclassical performance phenomenal. So far I am impressed with three singers--thoshi from voice of India, Mussarat and amanat from saregamapa. Amanat's rasme ulfat is amazing too. The alaps and taans that amanat has taken in the song are not there in the original lata's song. A unique rendition indeed!

Amanat is amazing too.extremely skilled..he is ready for big time right now..however, i think mussarat does have that extra spark, and although sometimes he is not completely by the book, as amanat always is, his voice just touches the heart. I love the part in "sanwre" when mussarat hits the high notes..the part which ends with "do naino kai deep jalaee"...his high notes remind me how nusrat fateh ali khan used to push the right word at the right time...toshi is good...but a class below.

Hmmm...I do not know if I agree to that. Mussarrat can sing certain (sufi/quawwalis) songs more proficiently than anybody, Amanat is much more versatile. He can sing the simple and western oriented songs as well as semiclassical songs. That is I think important for playback singing. It is a pity these two have to compete with other third rate bathroom singers (e.g. Mauli).

well said...however shekhar has years of training in classical music....and his "sur" was in place...and his voice is nice too...it just tells u how good mussarat is when his performance makes shekar's skilled performance look at most just competant.

I completely agree with you...the difference is one with strong classical singing skills with a very good knowledge of the raga charukeshi in which this composition is based (mussarat) and another one singing the most basic version of the song (Shekhar)with little improvisation. Notice the number of varieties that Mussarat demonstrated in the original performance as well as the encore performance. Shekhar was nowhere near it.

hmmm i don´t think so..please don´t get me wrong...but i think even if shekar wants...he would never be able to "outperform" mussarrat...mussarrats voice is much much better..mussarrats sur & taal are fantastic (but only if he sang ghazal or qawali/sufisongs)
