The fact that Isreal almost got wiped out was because the Sinai was not easily defendable. It was a close thing and hence Isreal agreed to give up the Sinai for peace with Eygpt. Eygpt holding the Sinai would've found it difficult to ferry troops across to attack Isreal, that was the military fact then.

The Negev gives Israel Defense-in-depth from armies attacking from the south, just as the Golan Heights does on the north. Do you imagine if Arab armies could pile up their armies in the Neguev! Israel wouldn't last long. So what you are saying makes little sense. In fact, Iasrael should have kept the half of the Sinai and then give it to the Palestinian people (deportation, you could say), along with the Gaza strip, so they could have a homeland, with access to two seas.

whatever they say, ISRAEL won the kippur war (ramadan war), i think the victory of 1973 is more prestigious to israel because they were attacked by suprise in too fronts, TSAHAL was outnumbered by 1 to 5, nevertheless they could stop the first attack and lead a brillant counter-offensive in Golan and in the sinai.We can't change these facts!

I was in Cairo last April. I noticed "October 6 Road" and asked about it. It's named after the '73 war. Apparently they don't call it the Yom Kippur war.

I asked, why would you name a major road after a war you lost? The Egyptian slapped his forehead, waved his hand wildly, "Lost? We WON".
