i never beat the game, i reached like 3/4 of the way when i was like 6 or something and if i saw that ending i would SEROUSLY cry like a baby!!! that is cruel especially considering how hard this game is!!!
I was very good at this many years ago, but as to how you get the good or bad ending always eluded me, even when i used all the best shortcuts i would sometimes still get the bad ending, you could finish the game by only playing a few full stages, but you only got certain special items on certain levels so you had to do some of them, the blue and white robe was a must as was a i think the propellor beanie so you could move left right in mid jump the feather and speed boots were very important 2
I was a little frustrated when I saw that sad ending... I don't even know why I arrived late. Maybe I spent too much time betting fish, who knows? Even though, I thought it was worth posting. I know there is a happy ending, because I saw it. Unfortunately, I didn't record it.

you have to pause the game (press F1) exactly once, or 5x, 9x, 13x... to save the princess..

@hermyli Somehow you were supposed to know that in the 1980's when there was no internet to help you with cheats lol.

It might be... According to mochaclone (see comment above), however, it has to do with the number of times you pause the game...

I see on the map that you used the warps. That might be the reason the princess died and you get the sad ending.
Back in the day, I always searched and used the warps and I never saw the happy ending.
Nice vid, by the way.. :)

Unexpectedly, the ending depends NOT on how long you took to finish the game -- but how many times you paused throughout the game.
In the original MSX version, pause 1, 5, 9, 13... etc (number increases by four) times to get the happy ending.
In the PSX remake, pause 4, 8, 12, etc. times to get the happy ending.
