'iro' is the word for 'color'. 'ki' is simply yellow. I suppose that you could get by using 'ki' just fine, really! In formal situations, you're probably better off using 'kiiro'.

well iro means colour so ki-iro means yellow colour = yellow so dont worry too much about it, it's just a convention, japanese people use kiiro 99% of the time. Ki by itself almost always has a different meaning..Tree!
