I saw Rhoda at 2-Tone Central a couple of months ago....surreal moment at the end of the night when she said 'Goodnight Lynn' and I replied 'Goodnight Rhoda'!
I love the chord progression of the melody line: some bright, some dark and melancholy. I also happen to like the female vocal... the tone conveys a controlled frenzy, and that hint of a foreign accent is too cute!
Rhoda Daker from the bodysnatchers,,she cant sing, she was in The Special AKA ,with Jerry Dammers, when Terry Hall left,i bought the Special AKA Album,it was well written, must missed that fital thing ....Terry Hall
Didn't like Rhoda's voice much either.,..but only cos I was madly in love with Terry Hall in 1980, so was jealous they got to say g'nite to each other :-)
This track shows the sophistication and unique diversity that is the Specials. The use of a bossa nova beat is just genius. The reflection of two vocals , one male one female relect the individual clashes of the sexes that both are the same, with mirror emotions, shows a depth of sensitivity with the lyrics. ( they both love to hate each other). I hope they play this at the gig I have booked. The Specials are truly special.
tremendous stuff, from one of my favourite albuims of all time. I love the way Rhoda and Terry sing out of different speakers (if you have stereo that is), perhaps to emphasise the distance between them in the relationship, and even say goodbye from the different speakers, just showing how far apart they are!
If you are undecided about whose voice is better, alter the balance when playing the track. When recorded this track was unique in that Terrys voice comes out of one speaker while Rhoda's comes out of the opposite cahannel. Try it
Like Rhoda Dakar's voice very much---love this song-----but what gets to me is the non-stop background 'parp-parp-parp' of a little vuvuzella-like horn - very audible from 3:46-3:50 - not needed and damned irritating.
But For The Love of Jeremy Beadle's Withered Hand,The Specials are bloody brilliant and shouldn't be moaning really.
This is one song where I think Rhoda's voice sounds good. I played this track in my car the other day whilst giving my mum a lift. She asked me the name of the song and when I told her she replied 'No, I can't stand it either' haha. One of my favourite Specials songs.
Why is everyone sayin they cant stand Rhoda's voice??? I think she has a great voice! If it was just Terry singin this it would be shite, She makes the record. I love her voice!
when i hear this song, i remember my first love katrin, i fucked her up because i find out heroin - and i love ------- it but now i have a beautiful son, called MIka, and a beautiful wife and actually i love the SPECIALS and i will never forget u katrin ---- i o u
her horrible voice is what was good about her, all the best singers have horrible voices with tons of character e.g. terry hall, john lydon, neil young, mark e smith, shane mcgowan the list go's on and on and on !
I know!!! Love the young bit!!!! I know you are, am "OLD FUCKING" school, just to press the I was there, Did that, saw them live bit, would have love to have had the chance to exercise my nether regional muscles with Mr Hall!!!!
Nether regional muscles... hahahahahahahahahahaha... superb!!! God you are sooo funny.. so okay you are old school ... it sounds better than just saying OLD.. which i bloody well feel!!! Anyway there is no one "young" in age with taste in music as good as ours!!! So you are still "young lady" to me!! :D
Big TY you, Like they say, your only as young as you feel!!! yes, and depends who I am feeling at the time, Preferably the entire Specials, Dave wakling and the occasional Selector.
This is a great song. I'm astonished to see people slating it but I guess everyone has their own perspective. Wasn't the female singer in this song called Rona? I'm not sure if she sang with Special AKA as well.
Yeah dunno who SHE is tho'!. Im sure a Google search would reveal all. I am just a bit miffed that Jerry Dammers couldnt find it in himself to go to the reunion gigs ... tho am sure theres a helluva lotmore to it than that. A bit like Paul Weller refusing to do reunions with The Jam. Two ways of looking at it. You can say "Ok. Its over let it go". OR You can say "These fans were the reason we got rich ... lets do a few one off to say thanks". At least Midge Ure realised that with Ultravox. Nice!
I see your comment about hating the woman's voice,i think it's perfect for this song.I don't think anyone can love the Specials more than me but let's face it ,Terry Hall's voice is not the strongest.
Her voice is horrible....i didnt say it wasnt perfect for this song ....Terry Hall isnt the strongest singer but that wasnt my point.. my point or should i say my opinion was i hate her voice!!!
i just rocked out to this song for the first time in my car... had to do some digging to find it, i did not think it was the specials... thank you 103.3 WPRB!
Reminds me of being 13 years old, walking around with a knackered old cassette player with the album "More Specials" blasting out. One of my fave tracks, great stuff.

Without Rhoda this song is just a song, you can hear the angst in her voice, and that what this song is all about,
One of the BEST specials songs
