The P-39 could have been upgraded to what the P-51 was to be years in advance. That was a huge mistake for our guys. It had a mid-engine design, high visibility cockpit profile, agility, 37mm cannon with huge space for ammo (a common problem in planes carrying large rounds), the men who flew it in the Pacific against Zeros credited it with saving their lives over and over again. Fantastic aircraft that we didn't do ourselves the favor of using to it's fullest potential.

You know, in terms of usefullness the P-39 really does take that award, and they live long as shown by BB the second. I wish I saw it at Duxford. : (
