  • There is an interview with " laura m eisenhower " on Utube which I think may be of interest. How much of it you can take in, is a different matter. Just to see what you think. ( Excuse the interviewer. He is a prick "

  • Well expressed, thank you for sharing.

  • For some people, religion just works for them. We don't have a problem at all with someone that holds a belief in a god, however if someone attempts to say bad things about others then thats a problem. If you enjoy your life as it is, be there a god or not and you do like I mentioned in the previous comment, then I have nothing bad to say. Life is valuable, however something has to be an opition for some people. Overpopulation will either cause limited family numbers or contraception.

  • No it wouldn't be forgivable, however you wouldn't know about it if there was no afterlife in the first place. That's one of the reasons we don't believe, and as a result we realise that this life is the only life we have.

We should therefore do as much as we can to help society and other and positively benefit people we encounter, as well as not damaging it and better for later generations.

    - Paul M.

  • Hey man thanks for the response. Tell me; where do you derive your 'shoulds' from? I mean; how do you get from realising there is only one life to we 'should' do as much as we can to help society etc? Cheers

  • From basic principle. Humans are a social animal, so if we work together we survive. Within our society most of the core principles revolve around treating others correctly. That's gone back way before religions where even considered. We should all treat people correctly, I don't steal from others because I don't want to be stole from. I don't go around hurting people or doing bad things because I realise there are consiquences within our society. Those are there to keep society intact.

  • Let's leave aside for the moment the undeniable fact that theives and murderers have been around as long as humans and that almost all 'success' is founded upon the exploitation of others is the 'Golden Rule' true or merely practical? Should we do things just because they are beneficial to our own or our progeny's survival?

  • "Some" success is founded on the exploitation of others, but a lot of success is due to a supply and demand basis.

We need things to survive, other people in society can collect these things for us and we pay for them. Both ends are better off, as I don't see many people wanting to say, go out milk a cow, harvest a field and then wait a few days so they can properly make their own cornflakes.

There are some systems in place to make life easier and to promote survival of the species.

  • As for the "Golden Rule" - I'm not exactly sure what that entails, however a good part of the population realise that it's best to do things that benefit ourselfs as long as it does not negatively impact society or someone else.

Unfortuanitely everywhere still has cases of people doing things that benefit themselves and hurt others, but those people get what they deserve.

  • We should treat each other well, regardless of any factor.

Society has thrived on the ideas of helping others and doing things the positively benefit other people, true it was sometimes for the worst but we are getting rightfully away from those times. However if we as a species didn't socialise and help each other out, we could have been included in that 99% of died out species statistic.

  • "We should treat each other well, regardless of any factor"

Yes but why? Because it is the right thing to do or because it is the practical thing to do?

If this life is the only life why spend time worrying about future generations.

    Why 'should' we do that?

Perpetuating the species perpetuates pain and suffering; most people don't live comfortable lives after all. Why 'should' we be ethical when it seems that a great many unethical people live very comfortable lives?

  • The Golden Rule is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." as said by Jesus but which appears in one form or another in many different cultures and has been around for many thousands of years it seems.

  • You appear to have a somewhat idealised outlook on our free market economy. The reality of supply and demand is, the west demands cheap goods, companies want to supply us these goods but they want to make a profit. The only way to satisfy the consumer and themselves and their shareholders is to produce the goods cheaply in a third world country where they can pay minimal wages often to children, enforce long hours and pay scant regard to safety and the wellbeing of their workforce - exploitation

  • If your talking about sweatshops and the like, you may actually find out if you research a little deeper that a lot of the people working in these factories and shops, do it out of choice. A lot of the areas they live in are extremely dangerous, and other forms of work would earn them less and be a lot more dangerous. As for the golden rule - That's been around a long time before it was introduced into the biblical canon.

  • I've been working in the international aid sector for almost 20 years so I'm well up on the exploitative practises in the 3rd world. So I'm afraid I just have to outright reject your assertion that somehow the people working in sweatshops do it out of choice; it's done out of necessity otherwise they starve or risk death in some other work. The western lifestyle stands upon the backs of the poor, the oppressed, the exploited peoples of the developing nations.

    What about my questions though?

  • Thats cool perhaps make a video on your experiences from it, that is if it's allowed. It'd be interesting to actually know what is happening there. Ah and the reason we should look forward and care about what happens to the human species is because they, literally are the future. Why not both benefit ourselves as well as provide empathy towards other individuals? It's how more complex social networks work. Hard to explain, but woking together is key.

  • Oh and yes, I completely appologise... I ment to say they were there because of necessity. I just could not think of the correct term when I was replying to a few messages at once.

  • amen
