  • OMG they look like baby tarpon!

  • They do look like your Tarpon, We have a tarpon in Australia, but unfortunately only grow to about 2 kilo's or 4 pound. they're a great sportsfish on lightline and jump as well. Wolf Herring make the best bait for Spanish (king) mackerel. Would love to catch one of your monster Tarpon one day,

    cheers Greg

  • good stuff

  • Thanks, great rig for Spanish Mackerel, nice and easy,

    cheers Greg

  • where can get some of those rigs drop me a line and let me know please thanks

    Pat

  • I get mine from Nashy's, Northside tackle compleat angler Mackay, Great rig for wolf herrings, and very easy. Just google above and you should find no worries,

    Cheers Greg

  • Very nice rig mate, definately worth a try. What speed do you troll your ribbonies at? As slow as possible?

  • Top Spanish Mackerel rig and nice and easy, Probably prefer the bibbed rig, helps dive down deeper, if too fast with the keel bib, planes up. Troll slow about 2 - 4 knots, Depends how deep you want them to dive, if spanish mackerel or bait fish showing deep , even stop and let the baits sink then start trolling again, Wolf herring are deadly and if any spanish around they can't help themselves,

    cheers Greg

  • Top effort, I don't get much chance to sportsfish now adays, but good fun, Spanish mackerel around the 8 - 10 kg mark are full on at the moment and was considering giving the lighter line a go,

    cheers Greg

  • You gotta Love that screaming run and the sound of the ratchet on that first strike, Spanish Mackerel can motor,

    Cheers Greg

  • Spanish Mackerel hit hard and go fast for sure, You gotta love that first screaming run,

    Cheers Greg

  • We missed the first strike, and you drop back the bait which got smashed and was almost ripped from Erics Hand, although I missed that with the camera, Good fish and worth dropping back the Wolf Herring if you miss the first strike,

    Cheers Greg

  • Terrible they will cut u off in a second try using a jig and trail 2 hooks on it with ballohey

  • If you look closely they are rigged withwire, use single strand about 100 -120lb. Ballyhoo, are also top bait and have done a couple of video's on those rigs, worth a look, one with skirt and a swimming one,

    cheers Greg

  • @Reefari very true sub to me plz

  • I like the one with Angled bib more, this rig seems to dive a bit deeper, where the other one will plane to the surface if towed too fast,

    Cheers Greg

  • Thats not a king thats a wahoo

  • Could someone please tell me the song that starts at 2:50?

  • ive been fishing plenty of times for mackeral but not with wolf herring but good video anyway:)

  • Wolf herring is the best bait for Spanish by far, in North Queensland anyhow, Gar or Ballyhoo are 2nd best. Down south they'll use Tailor rigged similarly, When quiet on lures, a well rigged bait will normally get a strike and is well worth a troll,

    cheers Greg

  • ive tried the bait. it has been wonderful for catching spanish mackerel.

  • sooo there herring? they look JUST like Tarpon.

  • In Australia we call them Wolf Herring, have a close look, but quite different to your Tarpon. We also get Tarpon or Ox eye Herring, but they grow nothing like the size you get, and one day will come over and catch one, Cheers Greg

  • fucj u bithc its call king

  • Wolf herring swims and looks good, Nice Spanish mackerel to top it off

  • Wolf herring are definately the best bait for Spanish, and about $5 each or more now at your local tackle shop, that's if you can get them,

    Cheers Greg

  • We call them Wolf herring in Australia, and the best bait for Spanish Mackerel, You call them King Mackerel in the US,

    Cheers Greg

  • is he useing tarpons o.o

  • In Australia, we call them Wolf Herring, absolutely the best bait for Spanish (King) Mackerel, and if nothing hits them, there's nothing there, their that good!! Too easy,

    cheers Greg

  • thats a king

  • In Australia we call them Spanish Mackerel, pretty sure they;re the same as your King Mackerel

    Cheers Greg

  • i guess ur a pro right...im just a novice and yeah... i only started fishing last month i caught i guess 32 herring

  • Hi, Sounds good, Wolf herring are one of the best baits going for spanish mackerel, Make sure you freeze them individually wrapped in Glad wrap and lay them flat.

    cheers Greg

  • Have found the Mackerel rig with the bib, to get the wolf herring down deeper, the other one tends to plane up to the surface if trolled to fast,

    Cheers Greg

  • Awesome mackerel rigs, I get through our local tackle shop Northside Tackle, he will send on, and can be used with similar fish or Gar/Ballyhoo. Google Northside Tackle Mackay and should put you in the right direction, or email me through my website and can forward on his details,

    Cheers Greg

  • Hi Jt,

When serious about trolling for Mackerel, run a gar and wolf herring and two lures, but the classic 18 bluewaters are a top lure, and have a few XRaps, but haven't used them much yet. They do look excellant and can't wait till June. My other two favourite lures are RMG Scorpions, and Laser Pro 190, at various depths.

    Cheers Greg

  • What is the name of that keel thing with the two rods on it? I have never seen those in the States and I'd love to try them out here.

  • Well i have just learned some great value out of that. i have the same set ups with the chin rigs and have been going into the fish. That rubber band idea is a great idea.............. i haven't been using baits for a while had imense success with the Classic 18 Bluewaters and Rappala Xraps 30's. But your way is a very simple and smart idea. Thanks for sharing Greg

    JT

  • Will still run the Wolf herring, but the Xraps are unreel, and classics, definately top lures and a couple of our favourites,

    Cheers Greg

  • Relatively easy, there's more complicated rigs, You need the sinkers/keel so it swims straight and upright, and wolf herring are very soft, so putting hooks through can wreck the fish. Plus the hooks lie flat and are flexible allowing the fish to swim through the water in a sexy manner, big Spanish just can't resist, Deadly guaranteed!! Cheers Greg

  • man this is so complicated y not just put the hooks through the fish no need for a sinker or the spikes though the head or tying the hooks to the fish

  • thanks for that Greg...always wondered how to do that ...ill be paying my local tackle shop a visit to pick a few up :D

  • what are those rigs called. can you buy them like that or do you have to make them..

  • Hi, You can buy these ones ready made from Nashy's Northside Tackle. Mackay.

    cheers Greg

  • If you have wolf herring or a similar fish, would do, you can rig Gar, Ballyhoo, tailor, mullet etc as well. Most tackle shops have pre made rigs, but these rigs are definately awesome for Spanish Mackeral. Check out your local tackle shop and see what they have available for your local fish species. Easier and quicker the better,

    Cheers Greg

  • nice is that only good for your area or would it work here in the atlantic

  • Provided you get similar Spanish or King Mackeral, should work, and can use other fish such as tailor, gar etc

  • is that out near finger and thumb????????

  • Any of the islands off Mackay, you'll find them, troll the deep points and edges, not Finger and thumb!!, Although have lost some good fish there.

    Cheers Greg
