in an interview they said, the 'you don't have to college part' was put in as a joke, as this song is very beach boys esque and they wanted to do the opposite of 'be true to your school'
The music with the video makes me feel like I'm a newborn wolf taking in and exploring the beautiful earth for the first time. And it's almost like a metaphor for how at college you're exposed to this abundance of knowledge and you get to expand your perspective. That metaphor could serious, saying that college really does broaden your horizons. Or it could be to mock saying that college can never truly open your mind, comparitively to the incredible experience of coming into existence.
The song does say that, but with the structural changes in the economy, it really does help. But you can always move to Mendocino if you want to make more money.
@ncpproductions Trees are a necessary condition for our existence (at this time), but the "reason" for our existence can be identified as the DNA molecule and its incidental propagation. That being said, there are no rules for consciousness; it isn't ordained anywhere that we must force ourselves to like or revere the universe, or trees, or chemistry, or any other aspect or process of life (or even life itself) that doesn't compel our judgment. Some people will appreciate music, but not trees..
when people ask me why i dropped out of college when i was doing well in terms of grades, i like to play them this song. even though its not the reason, i like to see the look on their faces. i do think, however, people often go to college for far sillier reasons than the reason i give for dropping out
What's less straightforward, and open to suspicions of irony, is the motive behind such a progressively-minded band espousing something that can easily be mistaken for philistinism (that college isn't a requisite in a young man's self-improvement/understanding).
I would understand if they mean to say that there are other avenues and agents of education and discovery besides a college campus (a message that's fittingly antiquotidian), but why not just be more explicit about it?
Ha, jesus man, Im sorry that Animal Collective didnt explicitly tell you if they think you should discover yourself at college or not. I resent the notion that not attending university is "easily mistaken" as philistinism; that's a sweeping generlization. And who cares if it can be easily mistaken? It's a song, not a discursive essay. Since when has AC been concerned with sending a clear "message"? As Avey Tare once sang, "It's not my words that you should follow it's your insides."
I'm not expecting a "discursive essay" from a pop song; i was only trying to suggest (I thought innocuously) that in today's irresolute culture where people are seduced by the most obvious and easiest message in art that maybe a band who's risen to such an emblematic stature for this generation and what it stands for would be more adamant about something as urgent as education.
I'm sorry if I've offended you by offering more than insipid praise (I love AC, by the way; I have since I was 14).
Hey, no harm done. But firstly, they wrote the song in 2004, hardly a time when they were, if at ever, "emblematic" of our generation (and by who's authority? Yours?). And an "irresolute culture" won't be cured through the process of education, if I am to assume that postulation is relevant at all. As someone who is currently in university, I assure you irresolute behavior is alive and well. And what's wrong with being irresolute? Do we need to believe in something Absolute?
....I can't possibly imagine being much more explicit than "You don't have to go to college." I mean, as far as explicitness goes, that's pretty much topping the scale.
Right, but irony can be explicit too, can't it? Especially if a statement is hugely discrepant with what would be expected from the person communicating it (kind of like an unorthodox group of artists discouraging education, maybe?), then I would consider it pretty overt irony.
i dont think they were. it sounds like a message from out of the sky/a message from god/etc ... of exactly what certain someones really want to hear... and it does hold truth.
LMFAO. i like this song alot, but when i heard the first 50 seconds , im like oh, it sounds so nice and serene then out of nowhere, " youuu don'tt haveee tooo goo to coolleggeee "
it was very straightforward, blunt, and funny to me. this band is fucking amazing.

the best way to say this is, why shouldn't it have to do with trees. the forest is freeing, and isn't the song just a little?

Great song. It's brevity makes it sound like an excerpt of a deep woods fireside chant, just as it's ending or beginning.
But were they being ironic?

What's ironic about saying it is not necessary to study at a university? Sounds pretty straight forward.
