i was looking into gettin the same pipes for my volusia. i've heard some people complain that these pipes make the exhaust sound "tinny" in the upper rpms. how do they sound out of the lower rpm range?
@MightyMounts15 - they retail for $400-450. I found a set new on ebay for about half that. I installed them myself, so you would have to ask your dealership what they charge.
hey man i just got my dads boulevard c50 and i want to put some pipes on it as well. I dont like the way it sounds. How much did it cost you to get the pipes and get them installed?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To each their own but a small bore Jap bike will always sound tinny with aftermarket exhaust. I own a 2004 Vol and prefer the stock pipes to any aftermarket exhaust by made by anyone. 800cc's is too small to sound anything but tinny.
lol, sure. i'm currently about 6'0" and 200lbs. but i'm working on dropping an extra 20! :) as you may notice by looking at my other videos, i'm gearing up to hike the 2175 mile appalachian trail next spring! (actually, i'll probably end up selling my bike at that time for the extra money)
Well, the C50 has a single disc up front and drum in the back. I've heard this complaint before but personally I'm perfectly happy with the braking on my bike. I ride mostly solo and i'm not a heavy person, so maybe thats why. When I do ride double, I could see how dual discs/rear disc might be a benefit. Bottom line its a nice bike, large for its cc's (800 -- most folks ask me if its a 1100or +), a comfortable ride even for LONG distance, and didnt break the bank.
Love the description!! I have an '06 C50T (Vance and Hynes pipes), '96 Yamaha Royal Star and a '90 Honda Hurricane after 20+ years on Hardley Ablesons. I started on metric bikes (I guess that's what they call them now) and finally got wise enough to go back to them!!!
Does anyone know if it's legal to use these in the UK (Scotland particularly). Will the bike pass its MOT with them on. Maybe if I keep the baffles in?
hard to say, but i guess with 1 being the quietest and 10 being the loudest, i would rate the factory exhaust at about a 2 or 3, and these pipes without baffles at about an 8. i dont know how i would rate them with the baffles, as i never installed them.
and i base that rating on how loud is it compared to all bikes... if you're talking about just this particular bike, it'd have to rate a 10, as i would have to guess that these pipes make this bike's 800cc motor as loud as it could POSSIBLY get, as we're just talking straight, unobstructed tubes here. watch flawlesslyfatal's video response... while the video doesnt sound all that loud when he cranks it up, when he starts talking, you can barely hear him over the bike!
"Muffler required. Not modified to amplify or increase noise above that emitted by muffler originally installed (Sec. 902-101)."
so yea, these pipes would be illegal. could he get away with it? PROBABLY if he kept the baffles. maybe even without them. it really depends on how strict local police are about enforcing it, and if he were to get complaints by residents. (see videos by youtube user "eldudeny") if he does get them, just be careful not to upset the old folk.
They are loud LOL.. If you are worried about noise even in the slightest, these pipes might not be for you. I have never heard them with baffles on, but I can't imagine they would be much quieter.
they're Cobra Streetrod Slashdowns, and you should be able to find them anywhere that sells aftermarket metric bike accessories. i lucked up and found a great deal on mine on ebay (new).
your dad would be wise to check state and local laws first. these pipes are *LOUD* Certain states like FL, CA, NY, and others are really cracking down on noisy exhaust. Additionally CA has heavy restrictions on emmissions levels.
where i live there are no muffler or noise restrictions. i'm sure i might break some local (in town) laws, but i doubt i'll have any problem, as they're pretty lax about that around here.
even if your state has strict laws addressing these types of exhaust systems, he could probably keep the baffles in and not worry, unless hes constantly revving, showing off, or annoying neighbors at odd hours.
i still wouldnt take my straight pipes down to bike week in daytona FL tho. i'd get fined.
the pipes will add a slight increase in performance since you're opening up more airflow. if your dads bike is a newer model with fuel injection, i suggest he get the cobra fuel processor upgrade (Fi2000R) as well if he wants more significant increases in power. if its an earlier model with a carburetor, he will need to add a jet kit. I also added a K&N air filter.
see my conversations with "flawlesslyfatal" below for more info, and check out his video. Hes also very happy with his mods.
i've found, and i believe flawlesslyfatal and others who have done this upgrade will agree, that while the overall 3 (pipes, Fi2000R, and filter) combined will add a significant increase in power, the largest power producing component is the fuel processor.
It smoothed out my ride, increased throttle response, reduced "surging", and since i put pipes on first, it corrected my occasional backfiring.
the C50 isnt a powerhouse so DONT expect hayabusa results... But its definately noticeable.
I started noticeing the ever so slight backfires on decelleration so I figured I better go ahead and get the fuel processor and while I am at it spend the extra 50 bucks on the air filter. I plan on putting these on myself as I am like you, I am not a mechanic but can turn bolts as well. I had the pipes installed because they were only charging 50 bucks to put them on. Plus it only took them about an hour and 15 minutes.
Did you order your parts online and if so where did you get them from?
yeah, it will certainly backfire more with the new pipes. mine will still do it once every now and then even with the Fi2000, but still its rare enough that i dont really care to mess with the adjustment pots.
i did get both online. i found the air filter on ebay for $35, and i cant remember where i ordered the Fi2000. They had it pretty cheap, but with the headache they caused sending me the wrong product and having to RMA it, i'd be reluctant to suggest them to you anyway.
I bought these same pipes for my 2008 C50 Special Edition. Looks just like your bike but with the Blue and Silver Tribal Flames. You are right your video does not do those pipes enough justice. Those pipes are totally badass loud!!! I got mine installed today and they kick ass!!! Thanks for putting up the video, That swayed me to put these on mine. They are worth every penny!!
thats awesome, i'm glad i could inspire you! :D its true, they can make a very quiet bike a roaring monster. i've been meaning to get some "ride-by" video up soon since the weather is getting nice.
also, check into the Cobra Fi2000r fuel injection upgrade to compliment your new pipes. they'll be fine by themselves but since it runs leaner now, it will richen the fuel mix, give you a noticeable boost in HP, and help prevent constant backfires while slowing down. i put that and a K&N filter on mine and it really made a difference.
also -- you MAY need earplugs for long rides now. seriously. :)
So far no backfiring and I rode about 80 miles home with them on.But I am interested in the Cobra Fi2000r. I noticed your idle speed is a lil bit slower then mine, I take it the fuel processor is responsible for that. I will have to get one, however my wife will have a cow if I want another 200 bucks right away. I put saddle bags on, new floorboards and now the pipes.
actually the video was made before i put the Fi2000r on. I think it was low because it was still very warm from riding when the second video was shot. in the first clip, it was a cold start.
if you decide to go for it, its totally doable yourself with just a few hand tools. i installed mine in the parking lot at work on my lunch break.
How easy is it to calibrate the Fi2000r? I looked at the instructions and although it seems fairly easy to install, it sort of lacks any settings for specific pipes etc?
If you're a tuner, you can play with the 3 pots to change the fuel ratios and dial it in, but when u buy one, you're getting it pre-tuned by cobra for a specific model bike. additionally the difference between the Fi2000 and the Fi2000r is the "r" comes with simple snap-in-line connectors for the fuel injectors. no additional splicing/wiring involved.
and btw, yes it is an easy install but you do have to remove the passenger seat, then drivers seat, then the fuel tank and unhook the quick-connect fuel line (best to do this when the tank is low).
oh yea, u should know... theres a california version that doesnt have adjustable pots because, well, its for california... need i say more? heh. the place i ordered mine from actually sent me that one by mistake and i had to exchange it.
Thanks for all the info. I plan on adding both the K&N Air Filter and the Fi2000r this summer. I have to get on the good side of my wife, which could take a month or two ;)
Unless I use the honey the bike "Needs" this stuff to run better.. Or maybe I should use the " I didn't know this stuff was required" when I bought the pipes. ;)
One more quick question. Did you have to remap anything after installing the air filter and Fi2000r? Did you have any problems with the filter after putting it on? Is your bike running at all hotter?
I am ordering both the Fi2000r and K&N air filter. I have heard some reports of the filter casuing some issues. Your bike is so similar to mine that I am relying on your input. Thank in advance for any info!!
i had absolutely NO trouble with mine at all. i personally installed my pipes, Fi2000r, and air filter, did ZERO tuning to anything (i'm definately not a mechanic, but i CAN turn a bolt), and have been riding daily since. i cant speak for all cases, but as for me, it all went perfectly smooth on my bike.
That sounds good. I figured as much. Some of the people were saying after putting on the filter the bike was not running correctly. But some of the same people had problems with the pipes too. Which i have had zero problems so far.
That's a really nice looking and sounding bike you've got. I have a M50 and am looking to put some of those on mine,WOW those sound really good!! just amazing the difference in sound,I'm sure a few ponies were unleashed as well. I like you're comment about riders just ride. so true I even wave at people on scooters,we all risk our necks for 2 wheels so we should all get the same respect. again very nice bike..
As I said in the video, while you can tell a major difference in the sound, you really have no idea how much louder it makes the bike. Its really a HUGE difference. I've also added a K&N air filter and a Cobra Fi2000R digital fuel processor, and in combination with the pipes it has made a significant increase in power and performance. I definately suggest you do the same if you add these pipes to your M50.
yeah and you were 100% right. YES, debaffled them before assembly >:) i like them as they are (loud a hell), so i dont really care to put the baffles back in to see what it would sound like otherwise.
