It is said somewhere and I am not sure if it is an urban myth that Derren was once offered a job with the police, but turned it down. They were apparently interested in his "people reading" skills, which can be learnt by anyone.

Derren is a magician / illusionist and I know he does not like being called a "mentalist", but he is one hell of a clever chap.
