there was a question to me like "what would you take with you if you can get one thing?" and I answered "a sketchbook" I just so love them, even more than my own works :D nice sketchbook, there are things to learn from it
Photos are fine, but I think being in front of the thing your concocting is pretty important. It's gives you a dimension and 3Dimentional feel for the object a bit clearly rather than using a photo. Also you can see the animals cadence or the way it moves to make your drawings feel alive and seem more real. But I do think everything has it's place and we can't all go to the zoo regularly so videos of the animals are a good source of inspiration to me as well.
I actually just ordered one if those sketchbooks the other day i bought an A5 one I wanted it just so I can add white highlights. Your sketch book is amazing I love the animals
I did not go to an art school as I am self-taught but did travel around quite a bit to see what I could learn from different instructors at various places to formulate my own ideas after many MANY hours of working on the craft. I would say studying the fundamentals is key but try to see through all the structure and find the lifeforce or essence of the person/character/animal - this is the gesture. Build on top of this and your drawings will be more successful much much faster.
I just started an art institute for Animation. I'm trying to learn how to turn realism to a cartoon realism style. Any advice? Or do you know if school would teach that? Do you use references for some of your pictures such as the gorilla and rhino? I love how you portray people, they're great!

hey mark , i really loved your work .loved the way youve explored all those different mediums in your sketchbook. i am an art student myself , and i was wondering how you got such clean drawings done on each page.i mean all those sketches look pretty finished , almost like you had planned out each page before you sketched in it. i have a sketchbook myself but it nearly aint as clean. mine has loads of doodles n rough stuff .
Amazing work! I just got one question: what art school do I need to go or what classes to take to learn how to draw like this? or is it just home long time practice and practice of drawing? I just wnated to know the technique ( like drawing sketches, drawing figures etc). Thank you
I never went to an art school so it's not a MUST DO sort of thing. I think anyone can do it if they believe in it and want it badly. There are some great art schools and I wish I had attended but it's not necessary if you put in the work behind closed doors yourself.
hi, what do you use as a highlighter? (that white on your sketchbook). I tried using white pencil or white pastel. but it doesn't come out as white as yours...
As for the sketchbook, it's Cachet sketchbook - earthbound recycled sketchbook with an ISBN # of 1-56152-416-6 and it's great paper that can take a bit of punishment.
It vary's and I do not time myself. It should be an enjoyable thing otherwise it shows in the work . . . whether it's done with haste or if one's not enjoying themselves, it literally shows in the work. Have fun with it and take your time, it's time well spent in my opinion.
The majority of the time I use PrismaColor markers, but Tria markers are fantastic as well (and reusable as they can be refilled). Other than that, the pencil line is black PrismaColor pencil as well . . . which is a waxy feel to a pencil and slides across the surface of most papers. Both are fantastic to use together.
Hey, I am trying to be an artist and I am trying to teach myself the basics of art to have a strong foundation. Do you know any kind of books that deals with the basics of art such as shading, human anatomy, and backgrounds? please get back to me, I would great;y appreciate it. :)
Trying and being are really the same thing. Just accept it and it will give you a greater sense of pushing forward. As far as books, I would of course recommend my book, The Art and Feel of Making It Real for anyone from a beginner to a seasoned veteran. But you have to understand - Rendering, Anatomy and Backgrounds are all individual studies and considerations. Each one takes some time to feel competent in. My suggestions is to take each subject at an individual level.
@Cre8tivemark thank you, I love doing illustrations so Rendering and Anatomy would be where I will start. Do you have any favorite books that you used when you were learning how to draw anatomy and such? It would be a great help since books about Art aren't my forte so to speak. I will check out your book in the mean time :)
@Cre8tivemark Great drawing. I myself a young teen artist for drawing monsters and anime. Also what did you use? did you get them from Michel's? How long does it take to practice the drawings and stuff?
@Cre8tivemark I just looked up your book on Amazon: 3 used from £52.99!? FFUUUUU why such a rip off? Your style is so enchanting, so I may well buy your book - if I can find a sensible price!
@LoliciousXD what type of artist are you trying to be, im an art student thats just applied for animation uni, theres plenty of books out there but technically theres no right or wrong the only thing i can say is grab your self a sketchbook and fill it will life observations, and use everthing, dont make it neet, have fun with it experiment, slosh paint all over the pages, glue stuff and draw draw draw till your hands fall off then draw with your teeth,.. thats the best way to learn

Honestly you are a realy good artist!
this is truly amazing! do you have deviant art or something? and maybe you should put some stills of the drawings you really like, so we can see them properly! =)
Thank you very much for the kind comment. I appreciate it. The use of Prismacolor markers and a Prismacolor white pencil is a really helpful and useful method to state something quickly and directly when out and about doodling from life.
I'll have another sketchbook to go through very soon. I'm having it edited right now.
As for the sketchbook, it's Cachet sketchbook - earthbound recycled sketchbook with an ISBN # of 1-56152-416-6 and it's great paper that can take a bit of punishment.
@Cre8tivemark i would love to see some more videos like this one. where can i get a sketchbook with that middle tone value, i couldn't find it at my local art store..
Markers are a very easy medium to use on the go, also watercolor in a travel size is fantastic as well. But anything I can get my hands on is game for me. Just depends on the mood or what I am focusing on.
Really terrific sketches. about the colour, do you go back to your drawings and colour or do you pull out paint/markers and go for it? For me i'm on a train, and using ball point pen. What are some of your mediums that you like?
Thanks for taking a look and for the kind comments. My advice would be, draw more. But don't draw one thing to death. Art/Drawing is hard and the problem is, there is no one way or "the way." So either take a break and look at another artists work and break down their process or keep drawing every day at a particular time to make it a routine and you'll see progress sooner than you think . . . I promise!
The sketchbook is a Cachet, earthbound recycled sketchbook with an ISBN # of 1-56152-416-6 and it's great paper that can take a bit of punishment with wet media or otherwise.
@sharpeshooterz I can't speak for the Cre8tivemark but I can speak for myself and my experience with drawing is that it starts out enjoyable, but as my inner critic pops up and starts saying, 'that pose sucks, redraw it' and other such things it progressively becomes more and more like a chore the more and more my inner critic won't shut up.
However if it pays off and my drawing comes out really nice, any unpleasantness is immediately washed away from my memory and is replaced with pride.
It always helps to "draw it out." Find a solution on your own and don't give up on a drawing, finish it and see how you can answer the right questions.
Sketching is fun to do and may at times seem like a chore but it should be seen as a reward to all the other stuff we have to take care of during the day, it's the desert at the end of the day or at lunch away from our other "chores."
The sketchbook is a Cachet, earthbound recycled sketchbook with an ISBN # of 1-56152-416-6 and it's great paper that can take a bit of punishment with wet media or otherwise.

@MrsPortgas,
Photos are fine, but I think being in front of the thing your concocting is pretty important.

Sugdavid/HDibbles/biribiroudi/daanavitch,
Thank you very much for the kind comment. I appreciate it. The use of Prismacolor markers and a Prismacolor white pencil is a really helpful and useful method to state something quickly and directly when out and about doodling from life.
All my best,
MAC

NelsonJoey,
I'll have another sketchbook to go through very soon. I'm having it edited right now.
As for the sketchbook, it's Cachet sketchbook - earthbound recycled sketchbook with an ISBN # of 1-56152-416-6 and it's great paper that can take a bit of punishment.
Best,
MAC

Shinsou,
Markers are a very easy medium to use on the go, also watercolor in a travel size is fantastic as well. But anything I can get my hands on is game for me. Just depends on the mood or what I am focusing on.
Best,

Really terrific sketches. about the colour, do you go back to your drawings and colour or do you pull out paint/markers and go for it? For me i'm on a train, and using ball point pen. What are some of your mediums that you like?

Hi, I've stumbled upon your youtube videos via Sidebarnation. So I don't really know who you are, but your skills are really good.
I just want to ask this question. Currently I'm also doing drawing and such, and I think I've reached a certain level of quality.
Problem is that it takes me TWO WEEKS or more to get something that I'm satisfied with. The rest will be thrown out and kept as scrap paper.
That's a really slow rate. Do you have any ideas on how to overcome it?
wetyewruyrtsutrdhjfg 1 year ago
Thanks for taking a look and for the kind comments. My advice would be, draw more. But don't draw one thing to death. Art/Drawing is hard and the problem is, there is no one way or "the way." So either take a break and look at another artists work and break down their process or keep drawing every day at a particular time to make it a routine and you'll see progress sooner than you think . . . I promise!

Any tips when drawing people on the move? I just started and it hard as hell.
jverdin 1 year ago
thats awesome I wish I could draw as well as you do.
Question: When you sit down and draw in your sketch book, do you enjoy it or does it seem like a chore?
sharpeshooterz 1 year ago
@sharpeshooterz I can't speak for the Cre8tivemark but I can speak for myself and my experience with drawing is that it starts out enjoyable, but as my inner critic pops up and starts saying, 'that pose sucks, redraw it' and other such things it progressively becomes more and more like a chore the more and more my inner critic won't shut up.
However if it pays off and my drawing comes out really nice, any unpleasantness is immediately washed away from my memory and is replaced with pride.
zippythewildone 1 year ago
I agree,
It always helps to "draw it out." Find a solution on your own and don't give up on a drawing, finish it and see how you can answer the right questions.
Cre8tivemark 1 year ago
Sharpeshooterz,
Sketching is fun to do and may at times seem like a chore but it should be seen as a reward to all the other stuff we have to take care of during the day, it's the desert at the end of the day or at lunch away from our other "chores."
