you are correct,but the builder splits up in spokane and the split doesnt happen till around 2am or so whenever the whole empire builder gets there,hence the numbers 7/27 and 8/28
The Empire Builder from Portland to Spokane links up with the Empire Builder from Seattle. The link up occurs about midnight to 1:00 a.m. Wish the lounge/dome car was attached to the Seattle-Spokane run instead. Some very good panoramic scenery is missed thru the Cascades. Is the Portland to Chicago Amtrak via Spokane also called the Empire Builder???
@JIMBOSKI58 I just realized that I answered my own question regarding the name of the Portland to Chicago via Spokane Amtrak. Anyway, riding the lounge/dome thru the Continental Divide makes up for what was missed thru the Cascades.

@ERAUPRCWA you probably took the Three Rivers from Chicago to Philadelphia which has since been canceled. i live in philly and i wish there was an easier way to get to Chicago then having to go 100 miles out of my way,

that train is to short to be the empire builder. the empire builder is about 12 cars long not 7.

The builder is made up from 2 trains one section from seattle and the other from portland to make one long train.
