I had a load in the box while heading west through the 80/65 interchange in rain. On the crossover back to to normal wb lanes my drives broke free. Not fun in morning traffic. Yet I had no problems driving S on 77 towards Fort Chiswell mt. Saw buster brown spinning his single axle tractor w/doubles sideways up a hill in that same stretch. I woke up to at least 4" of snow on the ground that am. That was fun.

It does take a hell of lot of more skill to do it with heavy equip compared to a car or p-up. 2 thumbs up. I do it quit a bit with a loaded 5-ton straight truck on city streets when making turns it feels good to be able to control it.

In California (and most of the rest or the US) they are called Super Singles.

"Big fat single tires instead of Duals" is a pretty good way to explain what they are to those that don't know the proper name.

Then there are even wider tires (often seen on the front of cement and dump trucks out here) that are the High-Flotation tires.

Super singles are used to reduce tire replacement cost, and save fuel out here.

Apparently the "super singles" give a significant weight reduction, 180lbs per axle according to Wikipedia. I would guess that they weigh less because they use only a single steel rim instead of two, and because you're taking two sidewall's worth of material out of the equation (picture slitting the sidewalls off of a pair of tires, and glueing them together as one big tire.) I always wondered what effect they might have on a truck that blows one of them on the interstate!

Well, since with duals, when you blow one, if you don't stop quick you are liable to blow the other one also, it doesn't seem to make that much difference!

Also, with duals it is much more likely for one to be under-inflated making it more likely to blow in the first place. I don't see as many re-tread Super SIngles either.

You did not say that you could only see six wheel bearings because in fact, you cannot see the wheel bearings without taking the wheels and hubs off the axles. And in actuality, if you were able to take the wheels off, you would then see that there are two sets of wheel bearings per axle (sets of two that is).
