I'm constantly surprised by the level of science education of the general public. With the availability of so much free information you should expect it to be much higher. Even at my university you find people indulging in the most gross nonsense; every kind of new-age and pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo. Supposedly educated people, who no more understand methodology as what makes a good argument in general.
Most Christians understand the Athiest arguments for why they don't believe in God but they can never accept that position because it would mean denying the personal connection with God that they've experienced.
Christians explain that intellectual investigation isn't how you make that connection but Atheists prefer to do what they know doesn't work, so that they can continue to tell Christians the reasons why there is no God!

Dawkins is a genious. He realises that you can have 1000s of scientists working on something, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge further and further, but what use is that if they become so detached from the public that society doesn't progress, in terms of knowledge?

I was like 9 years old and I could tell the bible was crap. I remember sitting in Sunday school, as a child, and thinking to myself "this is preposterous!"
I had a deeply religious 9th G History teacher that allowed me to voice my opinion that the Christian God does not exist. A lot of students were upset about this, but the teacher allowed my opinion without injecting his own (said he was not going to act as authority on the subject, that was the student's job).
I am grateful for the experience even though I was effectively shouted down.

It might interest you to know that I've been advocating expanding our foreign embassies into small cities for more than 20 years. Finally, all the water in the lakes and rivers was exhausted and all the dinosaurs started dying. I was being Alabama-centric not Americentric. I fully realize that USA is one of the most non-racist white countries of the world. Of course, not all are like that and some are wonderful people, but when you walk around in public places you do get the sense of being looked with "What is this browny doing here" expression. I have been to pubs and seen guys whisper in the ears of their friends "don't mix with him". Professionally, Asians may not be profiled but in social circles, it does happen.

Sorry about what? I appreciate and respect honesty. I'm also pretty sure I'm not too bright, but it's not for lack of trying, just poor traction or something. But I eventually catch on to most stuff people try to explain to me.
I'm pretty sure that if god wanted me to respect him I would. Not sure what to make of the fact that I don't. EIther I'm just not good enough to be worth saving, or too blind to see him frantically trying to flag me down, or too lazy to climb Mt NuffFaith, etc.

It might interest you to know that I've been advocating expanding our foreign embassies into small cities for more than 20 years. I would like few things more than to see my nation peppered with cities from every other nation. I think it would guarantee a leadership role for America even we stay a nation of fat ignorant fools. I don't worry much about what I say because my intentions are genuine and life is too short to play games. I agree we need to find ways to teach each other.

I love Dawkins' message. But I just wanted to point out that he fell victim to a common misconception. Non-stick frying pans were not a spin-off of space travel. PTFE (Teflon) was invented accidentally in 1938 by someone who was attempting to create a new type of refrigerant. Non-stick pans were among the original applications, long before anyone was exploring space.

Modern science has also helped conserve species that would've otherwise died off. Science has mostly good benefits and has some bad. We as humans make mistakes and we can also correct them. Genetic cloning could make it possible to bring back extinct animals. That won't happen in nature.
