@orcas134 Feeding twice a day is not too much if you are using proper feeding practices and not overfeeding your fish. As long as they eat the food right away, food does not go uneaten, and your filtration system can handle it, you can give your fish more than one feeding a day. Good luck.
Newyorksteelo, my aquarium is way too cloudy. I can't even see to the back wall! I have algae overgrowth and it is trying to take over my aquarium. I have a 28 gal. Nano-cube with a fairy wrasse, 2 ocellaris clowns, a neon goby, and a coral beauty. The coral beauty is always fighting my other fish and I want to trade him for another fish, but I don't know what. I want a flame angel, but would that be a nuisance too? Please help me!!
@orcas134 Smaller tanks like these require lots of maintenance to keep. You may want to visit my videos on algae problems and solutions. You may also want to check my videos on using RO/DI water instead of tap water, incorporating a skimmer, doing more frequent water changes, changing out the filter media more often, avoid overfeeding, avoid overstocking such a small tank, all of which will help prevent nuisance algae growth. Good luck.
@Saltwaterfishboy23 A variety of foods, including Mysis Shrimp, Flakes, Pellets, Gel Food just to name a few. I do not feed all of this in one shot, but rather i change the feedings daily.
hey newyorksteelo im your new subscriber, im totally new to saltwater tanks i haven't started yet i just bought the tank and some other stuff, your tank looks amazing i was thinking of doing the same btw can you keep bleu starfish? coz i really like them!?
@Saltwaterfishboy23 I have such a busy schedule, that I barely have time to watch other videos, but I will try my best to take a look sometime in the near future. Thanks for subscribing :)
man i think thse clowns look absolutely gorgeous, and to know theyb have been bred innstead of stolen from ature i bellieve they have the best forster paret ever. cheers love your vids
@pellepelle911 Thanks for the feedback. I am currently trying to fatten then up by feeding them several times a day, so yes, they are most likely happy with my parenting skills lol. Thanks again.
Steelo the best thing you can do is to move the torch coral closer to the anemone..get it as closest possible till they begin to recognize the anemone..then! they will begin switching lanes....once fully established in both corals..go ahead and quaratine the torch coral for a bit of time .this happened to me with a feather duster and an anemone..
@Hectorr877 Thanks for sharing that. I think I may take this approach just to see how it works out. The funny thing here is that they are now trying to host the bubble coral. Go figure lol.
@newyorksteelo steelo i got a question for you im getting an amazing setup should be done by the end of this month I also got a refugium sump and i only plan on putting live rock in there for the first 3 months then taking it out and putting back into the tank and only leaving cheato in the refugium chamber what are your thoughts on this idea (also ill post videos of my set up as soon as it is available)
@chafchak1 Why not just put the rock in the main display from the get go. If put too much rock below, it will become a detritus trap. Everything I recommend on how I setup my reef is found on my build process. I barely have time to view other videos due to the overwhelming amount of questions sent out to me daily, and so i prioritize viewing videos with subs that have an problem and need immediate attention. I will try my best to take a look. Good luck.
@fishinizer I will put one out this by this month (maybe the next month), and the other one in 2 months after that. I want to experiment thoroughly with them before the review like I did with the Marine land LED fixture which was tested for 2 months before giving it a full review. Stay tuned.
Steelo, thank you for the pass advise work real well
I'm sure people had ask you this before, some video back I heard you said you don't have to do water change for a long period of time(6months). how is this possible, I do water change every 2weeks, you mention deep sand bed, but do you dose cal, alk, kalk and mag ?
@ldam I have not done a water change to my reef in more than a year. Please visit my 4 part video series on "How To Reef Aquarium Maintenance" to find the answers you seek. It's not just the deep sand bed that makes it possible, but rather my entire setup. Good luck.
@timothylorenzini Yes buddy, very soon. I am going to try my best to release it tomorrow. I just have such a busy schedule that it is hard for me but rest assured, new videos will come. Thanks ahead of time for being patient :)
@Tempdoom Awesome. I would like to take a look at these. Is it possible for you to take a pic and post them on my facebook for everyone to comment on?
@abreezeducttesting Not sure how to do it with the new channel design since I am stil sporting the old one, but with the old one, I went to settings and there was an option to upload a avatar for your channel. I think on the new layout you simply click edit and it should allow you to do it. I am also not sure if you have to be a partner to do this?
I am thinking about changing my 29 gallon freshwater fish tank to a salt water reef tank. So i was wondering what type of lighting you have on your 30 gallon nano reef........ THANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@silverpanther5 The 30g nano reef as you see it on my videos had a Aquatic Life T5 lighting system. I have since changed the lighting 3 times to experiment with other lighting. That poor tank has become an experimentation tank lol, but it is still alive and kicking :)
@fishinizer If I was in your shoes, I would keep the T5's and wait a year or so before I jump into LED's. Let others try it out for longer periods of time and see their results in the long run before you make such a high priced investment. The prices may get better by then and the technology will become more affordable. Stay tuned.
@caryans13 RO/DI or Distilled water is your best bet. Please keep one thing in mind here buddy. I am here to help you and and other hobbyist that posts questions here, but if your question has already been addressed in my videos, I will send you right back to the video. This is so I wont have to repeat myself over and over again since i get 100's of questions similar to this one daily. This is the reason why I sent you to that video. I recommend you watch all my vids first. Good luck :)
@caryans13 Unfortunately, I do not have videos on this since my tanks come with built in overflow, but there are lots of videos on here that discuss this subject. Some research should set you free.
@caryans13 I also wanted add that its really not that difficult to do. I would recommend you look into the CPR HOB Overflow because they are known for their quality and small real estate in the tank. Good luck.
@caryans13 For a fish only system yes absolutely, you can even get one rated for a 55g instead, but do know that you will not only be a slave to the maintenance, but also if you are planning a reef, with sps corals, I would recommend otherwise. Good luck.
@brinks128 I am trying to release it. The video was made earlier today, but needs to be rendered and uploaded, only now I have people over visiting and hanging out here. Hoping they leave soon so i can get to work on uploading the new video. I posted a message on my channel about this. If I don't get to upload it tonight, it will be out by tomorrow night after work. Stay tuned.
I'm actually in a similar situation at the moment. I bought a black saddle clown as one of my first fish when I set up my reef tank like 5-6 months ago. I started adding coral and everything was fine until I added one of my favorite pieces. It's an open brain coral that I saw at my LFS and I just had to have it. The brain was doing great, and it was HUGE! then my clown decided to use it as its bed... Now the damn thing is shriveled up and it hasn't opened in like 2 months. Any suggestions?
@ReapingShadows21 I know the feeling man as My Torch has not been opening up as it should. Matter of fact, its less opened than what you see here in this video. Looks like you are going to have to try the same approach I may do which is to move the location of the coral. If that does not work, remove it the coral altogether if possible. Good luck and please be sure to keep us posted if you get the clowns to leave the brain coral alone :)
@newyorksteelo I've actually moved the brain ALL OVER THE PLACE and it still finds it. Lol he is a persistent little guy. I was actually thinking maybe getting an Anemone to try to lure him away from it. There's a down side to this idea though, my tank is 20 gallons and I know you said the minimum tank size is like 30. I can't really take it out cause this is my only tank. Do you think I should try the anemone ? Maybe a small, cheap one?
@ReapingShadows21 Ahhh I see, such a small tank even for an Anemone. if you don't have one, you will never know if moving the brain works. There has to be another animal that can substitute the protection and comfort the brain offers lol. Not too sure I would recommend a Anemone in such a small tank. If it ends up in your power head, you are going to say dammit steelo lol.
Sorry to bother again I know this has nothing to do with your video lol but would u stand by 1 of the reasons fish get "Hole in the head diseases" is the carbon theory? Cause it sound rediculous but once I started my carbon reactor a perfectly healthy emperor angel began to have erosion above his eyes :( my levels all read excellent idk what's wrong
@Bank5z1104 My friend has an emperor that is about 16 years old, since it turned like 5 it gets hole in the head every winter, tank perimeters are fine, all the other fish have no problems. He has been trying to figure it out the whole time, lol.
@Nomimasubiru420 I have read that Miracle Mud helps prevent this disease. How true this is, is something that I have no experience in since my fish never had it, but that is what they claim. You may want to have your friend research this as well. Good luck.
As a retailer O.R.A. Charges me $75 for the regular snowflakes and i have to sell them at $120 each! And the platnums, forget about it! They cost me $250 and that means I'd have to sell them for at least $350 if not more!
@silverpanther5 All softies such as Mushrooms, Zoas, and leathers can live in less light, but still do require instense output lighting. Please visit my video titled "Reef Aquarium Lighting" to further find the answers you seek.
@caryans13 The answers you seek are found on my videos buddy. If it is brown, it can also be cyano or it can be diatoms. I cover diatoms in my how to cycle a reef aquarium video.
Sounds like a plan. My Cat was actually tolerating the clowns but I was told that they may eventually kill it so I had to move them. Funny how the clowns would not move from a certain location in my tank. Prior to my Cat I had a large toadstool near them and they took to that. Good luck with the move and those clowns are absolutely stunning btw ;)
do you check out that video stello another ? wow how can clowns host to anything else but anomes ( how ever you spell it ) never heard of clowns tryin to host to any sps
@newyorksteelo oh i thought you said sps for a sec ....but thats so cool that clowns can host to anemones softies ect i thought it was with anemones only ..thanks i learn somthin new anout this hobbie
@caryans13 No can do. Probably only to quarantine momentarily or as a holding tank, but anything under a 55g is not adequate for yellow tangs, and even with a 55, 75, or 90g tank, this will will out grow those tanks too. This is one of the many perks with having such a small tank.
Great vid and your tank looks great. Don't know if you have sorted this problem yet but I had a similar issue with my clowns and a Catalaphylia. I swapped its position with my bubble tip anemone and the clowns quickly began to host the Bubble tip instead. Only problem is obviously you cannot guarantee that the bubble will not wonder...
@helishskills Thanks. The clowns are still all up in the torch, and the torch has not opened well. Your suggestion is one that is sure to work, but as you suggested, I would risk it wandering. Thinking of maybe removing the torch or relocating it to see what they do :)
@littlebigtangelo I agree, only sea horses or so difficult to keep, I would be afraid to add them to this reef. Not only that, but they fair better is less water flow and by themselves in a tank. Thanks for the suggestion :)
Great video! Back with another question though! I just added a powder blue tang to my system & of course my purple tang saw red & went for the kill! He's now in my sump! Any tips on how I can get these guys to get along? I put up a video & u can see all my fish & my failed attempt lol :)
@Bank5z1104 Putting the Purple Tang in the sump, and allowing the new yellow tang to acclimate in the main display for a few weeks has always worked for me. Once the Yellow Tang acclimates to the main display, is eating well, and is healthy and established, you can then bring the Purple tang back up and hope for the better. Good luck and thanks for the positive feedback.
Awsome video! I had a question, i just got a coral from liveaquaria. And there is some sort of tube or fan worm looking thing coming out of it. Should i be worried??
@jaguars4263 If it is a fan worm, I wouldn't be worried at all. If you visit my video "how to aquascape a reef aquarium" and check the description box, there is a link there to a website that can help you id hitchhikers with photos and information. Thanks for the feedback and enjoy your new coral.
@rich81090 I do not use the magnets for fear of scratching my glass. I use an algae scraper. Please visit my 4 part video on "how to reef aquarium maintenance" where I cover all the maintenance done to this tank. Good luck.
Awesome videos steelo....can't wait to setup my new biocube hqi came in today!!! Ur videos are very informational and have helped me a lot in getting started in this awesome hobby...keep em comin
@caryans13 Tangs belong in tanks that are 100g or more, but the minimum tank size I would keep a juvenile tank is a 55g tank. Keeping in mind, that in a about a year I will have to find it a new home. As for your other question, I wouldn't put no more than 2 fish at 2 inches in size for a 29g tank. A general rule of thumb to follow is 1 inch of fish for every 5 gallons on saltwater. Good luck.
@vanhalenman60 I cover this subject in many of my videos. As a matter of fact, I cover supplements in its own video, cal and alk in another video, and also discuss this in detail on my daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly maintenance video :) I may however do a video in the future to combine all the information found on those videos into one and illustrate the actual dosing.
I watched your newest video and was thinking about the guy at the fish store tring to sell that same bio pellet but also had a reactor. The thing was 200.00 and I told him no thanks my vodka was only 5.00 dollars and it the only thing I found that works to keep nitrate & phosphate at 0 ppm. Thanks Steelo.....
@abreezeducttesting Love to hear success stories, but be careful is all I can say. I preach and educate in my videos, and so it is up to the viewer to take the advice and apply. Glad to hear your tank is doing well after 8 months of no water changes. This just further enforces what I preach in the videos. Keep up the good work.
Sry about Nikey Steelo, hes part of the great reef above... i had a quick question, my tank is lacking proper lighting and because i am short on cash atm, i was thinking of moving my tank in front of a window(partially or fully i don't know). The window only gets about 2.5 hours of direct sunlight... but my thoughts are that since i only keep the tank light on during day hours, the natural sunlight could only help right?... Is this a good idea?

@tinytim797 That's not gonna work buddy. The tank will need direct natural sunlight by setting it up in an opened area such as a green house in order to benefit from natural sunlight. Also, the animals will require a minimum of 10 to 12 hours a day of lighting for proper photosynthesis.
Hey stelo sorry to hear about the loss of your clown..about the pellets, I have been using warner marine BP`s for well over a yr now and have to say they def do work.a problem I was having in the beginning was that I was still using GFO and it caused a phos/nitrate imbalance causing the BP`s not to function properly. talking with jon warner he said stop GFO and feed more and BAM the kicked in and now I feed more and everyone is happy..also I never got those cyano out breaks others talk about..
ive used the biopellets for almost 3 months now and they dont work. ive got the hannah checker test kit and they arnt affecting my levels the way i want. they dont work for ME
Hi steelo. Long time watcher first time poster. I love the Snowflake Clown, also loving the the 90gal reef system, I've just set up a new 12 gal nano reef system, after breaking down my 20 gal system due to moving and not having the space even for that small system. I found your videos when I was getting in to marine keeping very useful, and hope you keep up the good work. I'm hoping to get my hand on a cam and keep a blog on my new 12 gal system. Jon
@UltimateKeylogger I have been asked this before, and I will make a video on this subject in the near future. Will be a while before it is out so i recommend you to research this subject in the mean time. Good luck.
Steelo, absolutely love your new camera footage. Simply beautiful fish and your tank is looking wicked. May I ask what software do you use to edit your new videos before you upload them to your channel?
@Philster5927 Thanks for the feedback. I use Sony Vegas Pro, but I am a rookie when it comes to editing videos which is why most of my videos are raw an unedited. My specialty is the hobby and educating, but when it comes to editing, ROOKIE! lol. If I was not passionate about the subject and did not know it like the back of my hand, I would be in big trouble and would definitely need to edit my videos more often. Still learning how to use the Vegas Pro though :)
On a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to breed clownfish ? I know its hard to raise the fry but I just want to document the spawning etc. Also am I right in thinking that 95% of snowflake clownish offspring revert back to their original genetics and grow as regular percs?
@JUNAID187 It's really not that hard. The hard part is raising the fry as you stated. If you give the clowns what they need, perfect water parameters, plenty of food, and the clowns are in fact a pair, there should be no problems getting them to breed. You may also want to isolate them to increase the chance. Snowflake Clownfish remain with their paterns for life. The only thing that may change is the orange color (sometimes gets a bit darker). Good luck.
@newyorksteelo If I bought 2 tank bred regular percula clowns, one significantly larger than the other to be the female, would they pair up easily or is it harder than that?
@ReefBreeders I understood the question to be if the patterns change from young fry to adulthood. This is why I sent people to the website where in the descriptions, they discuss the rarity of these fish, and even explain that they originated from a regular pair that produced 2 to 3 snowflakes with every spawn. Thanks for clarifying that.
@ReefBreeders Yeah, I misread it. I get asked so many questions one after the other, that in most cases, I read through them rapidly and answer them quickly. Thanks though.
@JUNAID187 He is right about only a certain percentage coming out as Snowflakes, even from a pair of actual snowflakes. I understood your question to be if the fry remain with the same pattern as they reach adulthood which is why I responded that only the orange color may change. Check out the ORA website where you will find the answers you seek to this question. Good luck.
I had the same problem with my clowns and the flower pot. After about a month they just switched over to the RBTA. Give them some time before you change anything.
@JUNAID187 Whether or not they are worth it is entirely up to you and how bad you want to get these. It also comes down to their availability. I mentioned I wanted a pair of these clowns since last year when I added "Peace", and basically was patient enough to wait for a pair that was not as expensive, but nice. If the ones you are looking at are more than these, but lesser quality, and you can get them elsewhere, I would wait. Good luck.
K thanks for reply

Ok well could u point me in the right places on how I could put in a overflow box on a tank for a sump
caryans13 1 month ago
@caryans13 Unfortunately, I do not have videos on this since my tanks come with built in overflow, but there are lots of videos on here that discuss this subject. Some research should set you free.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@caryans13 I also wanted add that its really not that difficult to do. I would recommend you look into the CPR HOB Overflow because they are known for their quality and small real estate in the tank. Good luck.

When I set up my new 55gal saltwater tank do u thank a canister filter would work if I got one made for like a 90gal
caryans13 1 month ago

Stay tuned.

those are nice clowns man. I actually got my 2 black ocellaris clowns from ORA about 4 or 5 months ago and they are my favorite. :) good luck man
FishyDrizzy 1 month ago
@FishyDrizzy Thanks, and good luck with the black and white ones too :)
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
I'm actually in a similar situation at the moment. I bought a black saddle clown as one of my first fish when I set up my reef tank like 5-6 months ago. I started adding coral and everything was fine until I added one of my favorite pieces. It's an open brain coral that I saw at my LFS and I just had to have it. The brain was doing great, and it was HUGE! then my clown decided to use it as its bed... Now the damn thing is shriveled up and it hasn't opened in like 2 months. Any suggestions?
ReapingShadows21 1 month ago
@ReapingShadows21 I know the feeling man as My Torch has not been opening up as it should. Matter of fact, its less opened than what you see here in this video. Looks like you are going to have to try the same approach I may do which is to move the location of the coral. If that does not work, remove it the coral altogether if possible. Good luck and please be sure to keep us posted if you get the clowns to leave the brain coral alone :)
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@newyorksteelo I've actually moved the brain ALL OVER THE PLACE and it still finds it. Lol he is a persistent little guy. I was actually thinking maybe getting an Anemone to try to lure him away from it. There's a down side to this idea though, my tank is 20 gallons and I know you said the minimum tank size is like 30. I can't really take it out cause this is my only tank. Do you think I should try the anemone ? Maybe a small, cheap one?
ReapingShadows21 1 month ago

Bank5z1104 1 month ago
@Bank5z1104 There are so many theories out there for this. I recommend you research this topic well on Goggle to find the answers you seek.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@Bank5z1104 My friend has an emperor that is about 16 years old, since it turned like 5 it gets hole in the head every winter, tank perimeters are fine, all the other fish have no problems. He has been trying to figure it out the whole time, lol.
Nomimasubiru420 1 month ago
@Nomimasubiru420 I have read that Miracle Mud helps prevent this disease. How true this is, is something that I have no experience in since my fish never had it, but that is what they claim. You may want to have your friend research this as well. Good luck.

Would u put a yellow tang in a 30gal tank
caryans13 1 month ago
@caryans13 No can do. Probably only to quarantine momentarily or as a holding tank, but anything under a 55g is not adequate for yellow tangs, and even with a 55, 75, or 90g tank, this will will out grow those tanks too. This is one of the many perks with having such a small tank.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
Great vid and your tank looks great. Don't know if you have sorted this problem yet but I had a similar issue with my clowns and a Catalaphylia. I swapped its position with my bubble tip anemone and the clowns quickly began to host the Bubble tip instead. Only problem is obviously you cannot guarantee that the bubble will not wonder...
helishskills 1 month ago
@helishskills Thanks. The clowns are still all up in the torch, and the torch has not opened well. Your suggestion is one that is sure to work, but as you suggested, I would risk it wandering. Thinking of maybe removing the torch or relocating it to see what they do :)
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
some seahorses would look cool in there
littlebigtangelo 1 month ago
@littlebigtangelo I agree, only sea horses or so difficult to keep, I would be afraid to add them to this reef. Not only that, but they fair better is less water flow and by themselves in a tank. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Great video! Back with another question though! I just added a powder blue tang to my system & of course my purple tang saw red & went for the kill! He's now in my sump! Any tips on how I can get these guys to get along? I put up a video & u can see all my fish & my failed attempt lol :)
Bank5z1104 1 month ago
@Bank5z1104 Putting the Purple Tang in the sump, and allowing the new yellow tang to acclimate in the main display for a few weeks has always worked for me. Once the Yellow Tang acclimates to the main display, is eating well, and is healthy and established, you can then bring the Purple tang back up and hope for the better. Good luck and thanks for the positive feedback.

What size tank for a yellow tang and how many fish for a 29gal bowfront tank
caryans13 1 month ago
@caryans13 Tangs belong in tanks that are 100g or more, but the minimum tank size I would keep a juvenile tank is a 55g tank. Keeping in mind, that in a about a year I will have to find it a new home. As for your other question, I wouldn't put no more than 2 fish at 2 inches in size for a 29g tank. A general rule of thumb to follow is 1 inch of fish for every 5 gallons on saltwater. Good luck.

can you do a vid on how to dose your tanks, what to use and why
vanhalenman60 1 month ago
@vanhalenman60 I cover this subject in many of my videos. As a matter of fact, I cover supplements in its own video, cal and alk in another video, and also discuss this in detail on my daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly maintenance video :) I may however do a video in the future to combine all the information found on those videos into one and illustrate the actual dosing.

Is this a good idea?

tinytim797 1 month ago

JUNAID187 1 month ago
@JUNAID187 It's really not that hard. The hard part is raising the fry as you stated. If you give the clowns what they need, perfect water parameters, plenty of food, and the clowns are in fact a pair, there should be no problems getting them to breed. You may also want to isolate them to increase the chance. Snowflake Clownfish remain with their paterns for life. The only thing that may change is the orange color (sometimes gets a bit darker). Good luck.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@newyorksteelo If I bought 2 tank bred regular percula clowns, one significantly larger than the other to be the female, would they pair up easily or is it harder than that?
Thanks for all your help :)
JUNAID187 1 month ago
@JUNAID187 Yes, if they are of the same species, absolutely. It's only a matter of time before this happens, and in most cases, its instantaneous.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@JUNAID187 no, most breeders get about 20% platinum, 30% snowflakes, 20% mis-bar, and 30% regular on average.
ReefBreeders 1 month ago
@ReefBreeders I understood the question to be if the patterns change from young fry to adulthood. This is why I sent people to the website where in the descriptions, they discuss the rarity of these fish, and even explain that they originated from a regular pair that produced 2 to 3 snowflakes with every spawn. Thanks for clarifying that.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@newyorksteelo I see what you mean, my comment was based off of the account of a successful breeder.
ReefBreeders 1 month ago
@ReefBreeders Yeah, I misread it. I get asked so many questions one after the other, that in most cases, I read through them rapidly and answer them quickly. Thanks though.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@JUNAID187 He is right about only a certain percentage coming out as Snowflakes, even from a pair of actual snowflakes. I understood your question to be if the fry remain with the same pattern as they reach adulthood which is why I responded that only the orange color may change. Check out the ORA website where you will find the answers you seek to this question. Good luck.

Seen a pair at my LFS for £199.95. Which is about $300. They looked like standard quality, a bit lower quality than yours. Worth it ?
JUNAID187 1 month ago
@JUNAID187 Whether or not they are worth it is entirely up to you and how bad you want to get these. It also comes down to their availability. I mentioned I wanted a pair of these clowns since last year when I added "Peace", and basically was patient enough to wait for a pair that was not as expensive, but nice. If the ones you are looking at are more than these, but lesser quality, and you can get them elsewhere, I would wait. Good luck.
