Who is the heir to the crown left by Nilsson? At various times in history, there have been several world-class sopranos who could handle the Wagner and Strauss roles, then they were winnowed down to one: Nilsson. After her retirement, there hasn't been anyone to take her place. I don't think there is anyone today who can hold a candle to her.
actually, la nilsson was one of the very few singers who matched indeed strauss` the first condition of the role - namely one lady with a voice big enough to sing Isolde...

What happened to the last notes of the opera? Gee whiz...this is almost like a Pavarotti dog and pony show! BESIDES that= the lady was a TRUMPET - but I never heard her sing with any nuance...please tell me I'm wrong! :(
Nilsson's Salome is so beyond sublime. It's heaven. Is the Bing Gala available on DVD somewhere? I see several clips here on youtube and I would love to have it. Does anyone know where to buy these treats?
Note that she was chosen to close out the old Met with the Immolation, to close Bing's Gala with this Schluss Szene from Salome,& was the penultimate closer for the Met's Centennial Celebration, stealing the show with a--way past her prime--Spottlied from Tristan. At77, she brought the house down, closing out the 25th year salute to James Levine. She always commanded the stage, making the others look somewhat diminished, and she always received the most thunderous ovations without a claque.
I love the fact that I got the red thumb down when the person who commented about her "sleeping while singing" got 2 thumbs up. Right, that makes a great deal of sense.
Not only do I love it, it makes me feel alive. This performance is sheer genius - unmatchable. I think there is an idiot who said she looked like she was sleeping. Actually, that's a huge compliment, because she could have sung this in her sleep, such was the sheer magnitude and mastery of technique.
Oh, A-hahaha! Why calling him an idiot if you say that was a compliment? I wouldn't say she was sleeping but enjoying a "cunilingus". There is a catalan singer who still is the un-matchable one singing Strauss' Salome's role, you know, the one who loves to roll over the floor...
One more thing: the conductor is Karl Böhm, the authority on Richard Strauss!!
