Also, isn't unlikely that other planets have had intelligent life for much longer than that, since they also had to go through the process of evolution? And their planet was probably also inhabitable (as well as inexistent) for most part of the age of the universe. It's not like our evolvement has been slow.

@Esharido I think he was saying that *listening* is harmless since it doesn't put anything out there to be tracked. I don't think he was commenting on sending out actual signals.
Also, concentrated signals have only been put out for a few decades I believe, so only intelligent civilizations in the specific direction we sent the signals to, and within a few dozen light years, would know we exist. This probably covers an almost Infinitesimal area of the universe

We have no reason to believe that alien civilizations would be aware of our listening, so we should continue the practice because of it's potential significance if we do find something.
