@HiMinds I agree, going up in the morning has a lot of drawbacks (ridiculously early start, cold temperatures, the big crowds) and I myself prefer to go up for sunsets now. That said, I still think there's something awe inspiring about the sunrise viewing that the sunset just doesn't quite offer...
thanks for posting. now i know not to go in the morning since it appears to be pretty lame. ill go for sunset, avoid less crowds, and see the sun in reverse from sunrise, same imagery.
@yobuttin The mornings are far from lame, but you're right, the sunset viewing offers several advantages: You don't have to wake up at 2am, it's far less crowded and it is much warmer. It does get cloudier later in the day though, so be sure to call the Park Service for weather conditions before you go up. I've done a couple of sunrise viewings, but now I prefer to go for sunset myself.
One of the most awe-inspiring events in my life. We woke up at 3 am to drive our convertible Mustang up to Haleakala and watch the sunrise - it was truly amazing. Then we leisurely drove back down from teh 10,000 ft. with the top down. Awesome!
Talk to any local on another island, and they're most likely to refer to Oahu as "the city Island". So if you want city life, head to Oahu and Honolulu. Personally, I love cities and Oahu is my fave. The island of Maui is great too, with sites such as Haleakala and the Hana highway. Lahaina town is fun too. I think Kauai is the most naturally beautiful island, but come sunset it pretty much closes up shop.
God sure knows how to paint eh??..As breathtaking and awe inspiring as your video is, there's nothing like being there to experience it in person. Mahalo & Aloha for sharing.
I've done the sunrise a few times over the years and it did seem a bit more crowded this particular morning. While seeing the sunrise is definitely the "touristy" thing to do, if you want to avoid the crowds try going up for a sunset instead. Much quieter at the summit at the end of the day and still beautiful in it's own right. The only difference is you face the other way! :-)
i don't know why everybody likes the sunrise so much, you just end with the sun blazing in your face, sunset is much better
