I play in Drop D and C alot on bass, and I own a Squier P-bass, and Ibanez Gio 5-string...

I heard that it damages the nut if its to low, so you have to get a new one that is for low tuning

@GDawg148 Dude. What will happen if you leave it in a low tuning, usually something retarded like A# is the same thing that will happen if you leave it in a high tuning like 8 steps above E. Your neck will warp and you'll have buzzing frets. The solution: Adjust your truss rod. As far as damaging your nut, if its made of something like lowgrade plastic which if you have a cheap bass then.... yeah. Theres no nut made for low tuning...

The truss rod is the thing that connects the neck of your bass to body of the bass itself. My truss rod adjuster is at the top of the neck of the bass, but that's my esp bass and the truss rod on my peavy bass is at the bottem of the neck. So it really depends on what bass you have but either way there will be an area where you can adjust it. My suggestion to you is, since you've never adjusted a truss rod, put the strings on and drop the tunning to whatever tunning you want then take it to a

guitar shop or guitar repair shop and get them to do it for you and teach you how to do it as well so you can do it in the future

I've never heard this? In fact when I was talking to my bass tutor about dropping the tuning he said that wouldn't hurt the bass as long as the bass "could take it". You should know if you bass can take the drop tuning by hearing WAY to much rattling on the frets(that can also damage your strings and frets in the long run) If that happens adjust your trust rod and re-tune and see if it sounds better. I personally play on a Drop A tuning with a 5-string set on my bass and so far its fine.

@GDawg148 usually when down tuning far (like deeper than drop d or drop db) you get heavy strings. I use 10/60s for playing in drop b to drop a, and even C standard. With normal strings, you can warp the neck because there isn't enough tension on the neck. Also, down tuned like that, the normal guage strings will be really lose and uncomfortable (for me anyway).

I use the Earnie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms for my guitar in Drop C, they sound amazing. I'd imagine they'd sound good on a Bass too... But DR's are really good bass strings, they are all handmade. I'd look into them.

Not really, now it can if you have the strings wound in the wrong direction but not if you drop the tunning, just make sure your truss rod is adjusted right and if you do have 5-string strings on you 4-string bass make sure you get the nut fitted for them. Now you can't go back to 4-string if you do that though so just make sure you do what you know you want to do on it. Now if you are going to just play drop c and d just stick with the 4 string strings and get a 105 calliber string set.
