  • The song and video are a perfect match for each other, you can't think of the video and not hear this song. Likewise you cannot hear the song without thinking of the video. Perfect in every way.

When I was younger I just appreciated the stop frame animation and the music, now I am older I relate much more to the theme of the song/video.

  • If there's one thing that seems to work against Peter, it's that he takes a really long time to release a new album, otherwise he continues to surprise.

  • _ - Qué marca es el Reloj? Omega?

    _ - Y la caida de la bebida lentamente . . .

  • "You stoopid woomaaan!!!"

  • Francesca Gonshaw is beautiful!

  • I believe the song is about relationships between a man and a woman. Getting 'dirty'

  • Great clip. Just think about how it was hard to cam all real grass and mushrooms growings with the same acteur' positions. The CG sucks. All modern clips sucks.

  • His music videos are weird as hell aren't they.

  • You’d have to be pretty pissed off to do what he does to the apple at 3:27. But hey at least he hits the mirror and then the apple instead of her.

  • What a great vibe musically omn this track. Very original and organic yet ultra cool.

  • The woman is Maria from "Allo allo"

  • i used to confuse him with pet shop boys...........

  • welcome to hell

  • Isn't that David Gilmour with lipstick on at 01:18?

  • @StonepostInstitute muito parecido mas não é o Gilmour sorry

    mas parece quando jovem

  • peter is still kicking ..

  • Totally forgot how freaking creepy this video is. Insanely great song though...

  • He wrote this song about being in Therapy ...

  • This is so lovely. Love the videos expression of the lyrics. I have seen this video many times as youngster - but only now, today when i'm adult, I understand all of the metaphors .... guess you have to be in the dirt to understand it :-)

  • reminiscent of an early drawing critique, where I was taught about misogyny.

  • 13 bees voting

  • @garbidz They where hornets

  • And now I know where the idea for Black Hole Sun came from.

  • It's too bad no one makes music worth a fuck any more.

  • @Capburger Actually, plenty of people do. But unfortunately, it's not popular anymore, so you have to dig a bit to find it! ;-)

  • I have a 2 year old grandson and this time hes gone too far!

  • Peter used to be such an angel :(

  • Francesca Gonshaw is a goddess. Love her forever.

  • Digging in her skirt....Find the places I got hurt!!

  • PUAJ!!!! Pause at 1:17!!!

  • wow

  • love this song

  • PAUSE AT 3:20...ITS MICHAEL JACKSON MAN!!!!!!!

  • Gabriel said about writing 'Digging in the Dirt' with 'The Source Weekly' in 1990 : 'It was a challenge.I mean the dexterity of rotatable and censorious view on prolixity has given me a new outlook in my perihelion vision on emotions. After a while it became certain that the servility of one's worries only finalizes the grotesque excitability achieved only through literalistic and level-headed approach to heritability and peculiarity of said angle on life.In other words , it was sanctified.'

  • @oxytrebor yea, totally agree

  • @oxytrebor yea, totally agree

  • best video

  • The song was inspired by his marriage and subsequent divorce and his coping with it by going to a therapist. The imagery is representative of his handling his issues within the context of his marriage. Look at the scene where he swings the paper near the woman's face to kill the fly while taking his eyes off the road. The song is deeply personal about his own experiences and how they affected his life, particularly his relationship with his wife.

  • Terrific video - even better song!

  • Cannot believe this is 20 years old.

  • @mskj444 that makes 2 of us it kind of scares me since its about time passin and desperation

still havent found my strawberry girl who would save me..

  • @mskj444 and his last great pop song, unfortunately.

  • I believe the premise of the song is child abuse its wat I first thought when I saw it when it was first released in 92' Brilliant track & video, becuse wether its about a wasp, a man, or a child being abused, it made me think of all three & then some!! Altho being a child in a pedo sponsered catholic school system where NO-ONE saw ANYTHING in Ireland in the 70/80's, its easy to see why I put 1+1 together & get 2 or as I like to call it the priest sandwich!! FUCKIN FILTH!!!!

  • @IrishWidowMaker I believe it was from the breakup of Peter Gabriel & his wife/GF? at the time. It seems to me that "digging in the dirt" has the meaning of "examining the deepest places of the soul, where things come from". So what the singer is trying to do is get to the bottom of what has caused the partner in this song to have "gone too far" and endangered the relationship. But too,the song to me is about all of the abuse he's suffered, buried it, turned it into aggression and anger.

  • @BillGtrMan Exactly. To me, this video represents a sort of Post Traumatic injury, suffered from his own father, thereby causing him to become abusive himself, while still seeking the support of those he's hurt.

  • "Digging In The Dirt " always sounded to me in a Tears For Fears' way, but with Gabriel's own peculiar music.

  • This always reminds me of my ex. He was/is a nasty person. I feel sorry for the woman he's "killing" now. Poor soul.

  • Maria is this where you have been hiding from the german army

  • Peter easly has the greatest music videos i have ever seen there really good.

  • This video reminds me of a salvia trip I had.

  • Brilliant and insightful. I find just listening to this song highly therapeudic. I suppose all people have been hurt in their past....some more than most, I know I have. Something happens and those past evils invade the present. Sometimes the wounds are opened on purpose and sometimes accidently. Some old wounds will never and some heal with time and support. I have been through some horrible shit and I don't think my wife appreciates that. She doesn't get that there are old wounds.

  • nojento as lesma na cara dele

  • I already liked that song at the age of 12 and still do it at the age of 30 ;-)

  • awwwwhhh yeaahhhhhh

  • Awesome song.

  • Wow. Thanks Peter.

  • Been there done that.

  • This really is an amazing video from a creative genius. The song was supposedly written after Gabriel's failed marraige and also his failed relationship with R.Arquette (whom I believe he left his wife for). He went into therapy to finally look at himself and his own issues; and I am assuming he needed to examine his relationships with women in general? (that's just a guess).

  • I wonder how phil would have song this song?????

  • one of the most powerful music videos ever he once said the last time he cried was when he was working on this and a snail dug its teeth into his eyelid

  • Heh, I'd always rock out to this when I was little. One of my favorite songs.

  • a wasp landed on my arm while I was watching this...

  • Get goosebumps every time I hear this song, an absolutely timeless masterpiece.

  • One of the greatest songs ever written.

  • 2:28

    Yummy.

  • Got to love the Freudian influence. See my earlier posts to see why.

  • Music does not need to have a message or say anything - However, the best music usually does.

  • Maria! How could you ever love anyone but your sweet Rrrrene Arrrtrios?

  • classic

  • This song was my milkfood when i was child, and i still love it .

  • I knew this song and video was going to be a hit back when I first heard it around 1993.

  • I love this song and this video.

    Peter Gabriel a genius!

  • that strawberry is so coolio!!!!

  • Moral of this story : don't keep fruit on your dashboard

  • are those weed plants at the minute 3:55?

  • This isn't one of his better videos, but Lady Gaga just plain puts me to sleep. Man do I miss Gabriel and the videos he let us see. Its too bad we don't have people like Peter in our current day and age to entertain us.

  • @TheGames32

We do, but times and tastes have changed. If you ask me, blame it on modern media/communication and its impacts on society, and of course on neoconservatism.

  • @Abaddon133 oh jeez louise, take your tired leftist babble somewhere where it may still have a shred of relevancy.

  • @TheFearlessFreep

What makes you think that I am a "leftist"? Conservatism has never been supportive of creative and innovative art of any genre, has it? So it does not make me a leftist to point out this correlation.

And if you had minded to ask or put some thought into it yourself before replying, you'd know that what I wrote was no babbling but makes sense.

  • @Abaddon133 as an artist myself, I will now point out your failed use of stereotype. My wife is also an artist, and more conservative than I. Just because the left likes to pretend that art belongs to it exclusively does not make it true in the least.

  • @TheFearlessFreep

Failed attempt to prove anything, my friend.

I didn't say that people with conservative morals and views can't be artists, and probably very good ones at that, too. What I was saying is that conservatism as a political ideology is unsupportive and in more radical cases opposed to quality and, most of all, variety in art and freedom of art.

  • @Abaddon133

What I wanted to say was rather "diversity in art", not variety. Slightly wrong choice of words, just came to think of that just now.

  • @TheFearlessFreep Yes because bringing political slant into a conversation about a music video is so totally relevant.

  • I don't understand he's hitting a woman!

  • @projectus2 He was swinging at the insect, not the woman. He scared the woman in the process, though.

  • So much talk about art these days focuses on the purely technical, and while that is vitally important, technical tricks without any real content are total bullshit and a snooze. What about the themes in this song/video? Anger, repressed desire, sex, childhood trauma, misunderstanding, murder, decomposition, transformation, metamorphosis (a favorite theme of Gabriel's, re: Cuckoo Cocoon), resurrection, and healing to name a possible few? What's it all about eh?

  • Gotta love the slow motion apple smash at 3:25 :)

  • fans of this song...my friends band did a cover of this that is dope. search "traverser - peter gabriel cover"

  • we all should dig in the dirt to find the places we got hurt

  • appreciate the great video etc but not enough is being said about the great song...!

  • I hear you oo9firefox....quality music must be sought out these days

  • Truly brilliant video making.

  • This has to be one of the single most creative videos I have ever seen. I remember seeing it for the first time and just being floored by the work.

  • one of his best!

  • Pretty powerful stuff. Anyone recovering from addiction or some underlying issue can relate.

  • @HanginWithSnakes

    Like (almost) ALL of us?

  • Can always count on a cool base line ,in his songs ......

  • Julian assange's theme song....

  • We're in 2011, and this is yet one of the best videos ever made.

  • @nanakruppa Thats because art has been removed from all aspects of music

  • Him and his ex's Jill Moore and Rosanna Arquette. He went into therapy; hence the digging in the dirt

  • Who are the two nasty old people?

  • feel thanks to this we got Gil Grissom :P

  • @TheEmbrace1 I like hearing people finding their own meaning in songs. PG's explanation of Sledgehammer is very down-to-earth - it's all about sex! I mention it only cos I find the contrast amusing :-) Of course, sex is a cosmic concept & the icons of birth, life, death, Universe are all there in the video so I'm sure the philosophical / transcendental were not far from Peter's mind. I think this song is more earthy, animalistic, primal than the more ethereal/spiritual we are used to from PG

  • @looseSpark Referring to Sledgehammer at the end of my last comment. Digging in the Dirt has it all: philosophical, transcendental, ethereal, spiritual, earthy, animalistic, primal etc. etc. that's what makes it so awesome and powerful!

  • Pure genius.

  • ..., simply amazing the value that Peter Gabriel has brought to music ..., or rather the arts as a whole; I can find Peter Gabriel music to match most of the valuable passages of my life ...

  • 9 people don't talk back and just drive the car.

  • Pure genius. I pity those who didn't grow up in the 80's....

  • @edmonton67 So true :~)

  • peter gabriels bst song and video för sure

  • This song, and the album that it's on, was done after Peter Gabriel just got through a painful divorce. You can definitely tell what was going through his mind as a result of this tumultuous event from this song and video. The rest of the album is excellent by the way.

  • Who is the girl in the video ?

  • @tomyzbz

    Francesca Gonshaw, actress

  • great

  • great song !

  • such an amazing song

  • Shut your mouth

    Don't talk back

    Just drive the car

  • this song is about psychoanalysis.

  • @Guitarstring187 explain please... I can kind of uunderstand where your coming from, but I'm not sure.

  • @FelstoneNick My psych proof cited this song as an example of psychoanalysis. He said freud and co. looked into the childhood for allot of the problems that people encounter mentally. So it means that they were "digging through the dirt" (past unconscious) "He feels it in his head and in his sex" very fruedian. When people feel anxiety the unconscious is trying to bubble up. Hence "this time you've come to far" The opening in the dirt and "don't turn back the car" are ex. of defence mech.

  • @Guitarstring187 also "Mercy Street" it is a tribute to the Poet Anne Sexton. She became famous for her poerty not intentionally but as therapy to combat her depression. Extraordinary people seem to understand each other. 45 Mercy Street shows as you mentioned some defense mechs...BTW awesome harmony with the guitars in this song

  • Utterly Underrated

  • peter walked to the beat of his own drum and is one of the best song writers and musicians ever this song here proved that let alone his imagination why making videos thanks peter

  • peter walked to the beat of his own drum he doenst emualte any one is one the best song writer musicians of his era and ever for that matter

  • The US album is the only PG album i've never really gotten around to hearing in its full length - I just love the others so much, i don't want to experience his relationship issues. But i guess i'll ultimately have to listen to it sometime.

1992 was after all my year of birth.

  • There is more emotion and skill in this video, let alone the song itself, than most "musicians" could ever hope to put on display today.

Its been a long time since the song was made and I hope you found what you were looking for Peter.

  • I was 13 years old when I first heard this. Still makes my hair stand on end!

  • one of his greatest!!! one of the first videos i've seen on mtv and i loved it

  • Change TV now ! Please go back 2 90"s :'(

  • van Fu no

  • I am trying to translate this song to Polish and would like to know what does it mean: "As I close on in".

  • I personally think Peter looked SO SO SO hot in the secret world live tour, which was after this... maybe its the goatee thing, or maybe he just got sexier with age, :)

  • Heal

  • "Mooji PL - Śmiech buddy"

    "Fale GDN 1"

please search for these here on YouTube

  • @ogniwko What do you mean my friend??

  • @ThexBorg

What exactly do you want me to explain?

  • I love the fact that francesca gonshaw is in this video & then after that she pretty much disappeared off the face of the earth ( i.e. now behind the camera & painting ) & also not surprised to learn that this video won a grammy as a collaboration between peter gabriel & francesca

  • He is a genius....

  • This is my favorite song of Peter Gabriel

  • This is probably my favorite song from the album.

  • One of my favourite PG- songs. So much intensity !

  • Comment removed

  • Love this song. And Peter Gabriel's videos are always a treat to watch.

  • fascinating video and song

  • vagrantblues i agreee whole heartedly..its not just the film clips that have deteriated its the music as well..i think growing up 80s 90s listening to that particular genre of music was pure and well never see or hear anything like that again in our lifetime anyway

  • True art! Unfortunately most of today's videos or songs are pointless, empty...

  • retards.

  • I was online editor for this video. 24 hours solid back in '92 armed with just three Betacam machines and a GVG 100. 12 layers going on in some places. That's a lot in a linear tape suite!

Directed by the genius that is John Downer.

    Truly innovative

  • @londislagerhound I worked set lighting on many rock videos in the 90's and it seems like the money for projects like this are just not there any more. I remember Janet Jackson "IF" was 9 days of shooting. Video (film) projects like that seem to be gone. Am I wrong? What the hell happed.

  • @ENCOMAN It's pretty awesome you got to work in the industry at that time dude, it really was a special time. I think these types of productions have gone the way of the dodo because the content distribution has changed so dramatically. I was a teenager at the time and music videos had big time premiers on MTV, which was really, other than the radio, the only medium for presenting these works. Now the internet has usurped that and the money outlay is probably too much for such a diffuse medium

  • @londislagerhound If your comment is really true than Thank You. This has always been one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs and the video is freakin' cool as SHIT. The good kind of SHIT!!!

  • @czarman01

Yeah, it's true. BBC editor until 2008

  • @londislagerhound Nice...props to you, Sir. Great work, great video.

  • @londislagerhound Great work, i salute anyone who worked with linear editing back in the day.

Was a big hassle in all honesty.
