Don't like this live version...too fast or something...its just not right....why hasn't someone made their own video for the actual version from the album?
@stronggoes - you are exactly right about Bob being a fan of Pixies. Similarly, Frank Black / Black Francis has said that Pixies were massively influenced by Husker Du. I suppose it's a mutual appreciation thing.
Bob Mould and Black Francis were pretty good friends at one time. There's a 1991 interview from Guitar Player magazine (IIRC) where they "interview" each other, and it's pretty much a love-fest between the two of them over who is more genius or the better guitar player, etc.
Bob has said in the past that he stole the bassline of Debaser for this song because the Pixies sure stole enough from Husker Du, he could take something back. It's all good-natured fun, people.
@leamanc That's david barbe on bass, he's an original. a great producer and plays in athens with patterson hood and dbt also produces them. He's the man!!! I love Bob and he picked one of the best in David
@jczother it's not Barbe on bass here, but agree with your comments about him! David did come back and do some shows with Bob after this I think, though..
@cubistblues You are correct sir, my bad. I stand by all and I can really hear him not being there. It was a odd combo for Sugar and Copper Blue still is a all time great. Check out David Barbe and the quick hooks, rocker!
I dont hear any semblance between Debaser and A Good Idea except the first bass lines which who cares?? you guys take really good music and comparing these two bands too serioulsy and personal.....i love black francis but he is no Bob Mould just my opinion...Peace
Firstly, fuzzydouce, I am debating with a guy, like yourself whose insecurities requires them to tell the world how he SAW the Huskers and Pixies in there heyday . Good for you , your king of the freakin world for your landmark achievements. All to say, the guy is not a kid and probably 40 like yourself. He told me to Pogue Mahone so I gave it back. Last time i checked you were allowed to debate issues on YouTube? However, your right, got no business belittling a kid, clearly not the case here!
Bob Mould and Black Francis were hanging out in Athens Georgia with Dave Barbie when Sugar recorded Copper Blue . They were both influencing each other at the time.
Bob said in an interview when Copper Blue was released ,that this song was his tribute to the Pixies.....its funny to read the posts on here about this sounding like the Pixies...it was intended...Bob is a Pixies fan...
@stronggoes I also read that Frank Black, primary songwriter of The Pixies, said Husker-Du's album 'Zen Arcade' is one of his favorite records of all time. It's great to know that they're mutual fans of each other, even if one had a bigger influence than the other. Both are legendary bands. I'm 24 years old - I wish more people my age would go further in the past to explore what most of today's watered down rock tries, and unfortunately fails, to emulate.
The young guy is on his 40's i think. He just has a high voice. There's a great video of him playing Wishing Well, that's where I got the chords from since there are not tabs.
It`s funny , I`ve listened to Debaser by The Pixies and a Good Idea by Sugar for ages and never noticed the similarities. Who copied who? Sugar must have come first?
Pfffft! If ANYONE copied anyone, it's the fucking Pixies!!!!!
A good band to be sure (although boring in concert whenever I saw 'em), the Pixies could never hold a candle to the raw power of Husker Du ... or any of their individual components!
Man you cant say anything bad about either brother. If you know anything about these bands, there was no freakin copying going on. What are you...like 11 or something? As if... Black or Mould had to copy anyone for there ideas. Cobain came out directly however and said that he took the riff from Teen Spirit right from Debaser on Doolittle. "Pixies Copying"??? Ever listen to the Pixies dude? Ever heard anything like that before? What was it, I'd like to know?
First of all, I said the Pixies were a good band but boring in concert. Did you see them in their heyday? I did. Several times. For all the high energy of their songs, their live shows were woefully short and utterly passionless.
Did you see Husker Du in their heyday? I did. Several times. They were brilliant.
Artists copy each other all the time. Sorry if this comes as news to you. Who knows? Maybe Mould was returning the favor. Anything is possible.
How about "Artists often draw influence from other respected bands" perhaps.
Sorry to demand that you expand your woeful use of the English Langauge. When you graduate from Grade 4 your going to be asked to use big person words other than "copying".
OK, perhaps "Good Idea" sounds a little like a Pixies song....but frankly...what else you got?
Heres a good one "The Stones were copying The Beatles"
What a douche! Even if you weren't being hipster facetious, why'd you be a dick to a kid into decent rock & roll who's into HUSKER DU/PIXIES? I'm sure you shot out of yer mom's puss and was punk rock from birth right? Please...
I saw HUSKER DU by accident with my 17 year old sister in '85 at the Fireman's Hall in Ft. Lauderdale. I didn't know who they were or what the fuck was going on. Now I'm a fan for life. Where were you motherfucker? 1973 represent!
Well, Pixies certainly owe a debt to Husker DU (which they'd freely admit) but this specific song's from Copper Blue which came out in 92. Debaser was 89: around the time Bob was doing Workbook.
@johnny991965 Debaser came first. I kinda get how people can hear similarities between the two, but I highly doubt that there was any "copying" going on. Effects on the bass and lead guitar are similar. Both are great songs. Gotta love the Pixies, gotta love Mr. Mould.
I honestly prefer the studio version of 'A Good Idea' (feels very rushed here), but hearing Sugar at all is great! And now that I listen, I can hear some similarities. The beginning bass lines of the two songs particularly.
@johnny991965 You poor sad ignorant child... Mould said this was a tribute to the Pixies. Might even have said it on the sleevenotes. NEVERMINd Recruiting a basist for the Pixies a request was made for a Husker Du fan... Kim Deal you crazy girl....O SUGAR can you keep track...
@Sarusource What a friendly bunch on YouTube eh? I make a remark (I am allowed a bit of free-will) and some Nazi calls me a 'Sad, Ignorant child'. Sorry Mr Dictator that I don't reach your high standards of music knowledge-now crawl back into your hole like a good little slimeball...
@johnny991965 I really appologize. I guess I came across as snide rather than playful which is what I intended. You get my thumbs for simply liking music which I think is great!!
just so's you know, Bob Mould was in a band called Husker Du, when the Pixies formed Frank Black advertised for a guitarist who was into Husker Du. Dont put the cart before the horse! Sorry to be such a pedant
Absolutely...I agree. I have several Husker Du L.P.s. I remember them well...He and Grant Hart influenced the Pixies no doubt...I should have clarified that I read an article that this was a tribute to the Pixies.
Actually, you're both right...the Pixies were absolutely influenced by Bob & Husker Du. However, this is widely known as a song that is a nod to Frank & the Pixies...so, fair to say that there is mutual admiration here.
I was at the Shank Hall show... totally awesome. Also saw the Metro show in Chicago on the 7th and slogged through the snow to the Grog Shop show in Cleveland on the 8th... all were incredibly worth it!
Holy crap!!The timing in this song is more than amazing.Like Bob.And every clip they put on here I'm going to say how I was at this show right in front of him at his feet.Yeah it's hard not to worship him from there.Bob Mould is THEGODOFROCK.
I think its awesome that Bob is still playing music. His backing band is great, especially the drumming of Brendan Canty. Fugazi may be on hiatus, but I'm glad to see two of my favorite performers playing together.

When frank black posted a "musicians wanted" in a local newspaper when he was starting the pixies he listed husker du as a main influence. i know this is a sugar song but go figure...
