Bob Mould and Black Francis were pretty good friends at one time. There's a 1991 interview from Guitar Player magazine (IIRC) where they "interview" each other, and it's pretty much a love-fest between the two of them over who is more genius or the better guitar player, etc.

Bob has said in the past that he stole the bassline of Debaser for this song because the Pixies sure stole enough from Husker Du, he could take something back. It's all good-natured fun, people.

@stronggoes I also read that Frank Black, primary songwriter of The Pixies, said Husker-Du's album 'Zen Arcade' is one of his favorite records of all time. It's great to know that they're mutual fans of each other, even if one had a bigger influence than the other. Both are legendary bands. I'm 24 years old - I wish more people my age would go further in the past to explore what most of today's watered down rock tries, and unfortunately fails, to emulate.

First of all, I said the Pixies were a good band but boring in concert. Did you see them in their heyday? I did. Several times. For all the high energy of their songs, their live shows were woefully short and utterly passionless.

Did you see Husker Du in their heyday? I did. Several times. They were brilliant.

Artists copy each other all the time. Sorry if this comes as news to you. Who knows? Maybe Mould was returning the favor. Anything is possible.

Well, Pixies certainly owe a debt to Husker DU (which they'd freely admit) but this specific song's from Copper Blue which came out in 92. Debaser was 89: around the time Bob was doing Workbook.

Bob and Charles have a mutual appreciation for each other's work (The Pixies opened for Bob on his 1989 Workbook tour). Bob has often said the bass line in this song is a tip of the hat to Charles and his band. That's what the fuck.
