No, the actors knew it was fake as in fact they made-up the entire Blair Witch legend. They were informed to hike to certain places by notes left for them by the Director. They weren't, however, informed of what was going to happen, so they were genuinely surprised by the things that happened.

For the record, although the film was fake, the actors were not told that. They actually where told by the directors they were making a documentary. So for example, that one thing heather saw that was off camera later in the film, they did not script that, one of the directors friends dressed up and scared them, so those reactions were real.

Not a single scene made you jump, not a single scary event happened,.. just 3 teens shouting at each other because they got lost in the woods. Bad ending also. I rate this movie a fucking 3. It's all made up. Lots of work went into making the legend of the Blair Witch seem real. All of the archived film footage, old photos, police and FBI evidence, everything you see was fabricated for the support of the movie. If you watch the SciFi special Curse of the Blair Witch, all of the footage looks authentic. But watch the credits and you'll see that there were actors playing all of the parts except for interviews, which were improvised.

FYI: Tom Williams really is Mike Williams brother.
