  • I just taught my english setter this trick. It was so fun! We had some problems from lifting his paw when standing still to lift and walk at the same time. He did it with support from my hand, but the transition from support to no support was hard. I felt we didn't have any progress, but then I just gave him some time off from this trick for a couple of weeks, and when we started the training again he did the limping correct! Yeah! :D I can put a videoresponse here if you want to see.

  • Hey Emily,

First of all congratulations on this wonderful video ! Our little Gaïa learn this advanced trick in no time thanks to you, and she's only 9 month old !

I was wondering if you have a video of how to teach how to pass the ball back with the nose, like you do as a reward at the end of the video...

Thank you so much your channel is really helpful.

  • I got an inspiration from this. My dog just had her first lesson in fake limping. She can lift her right front paw and I'm going to shape her to keep it in the air and then to keep it there when she walks. Though I should finish the old tricks first (crawling and crossing paws).

Alva whines when I use clicker training methods. I think she is a bit frustrated and worries if she doesn't success to get rewarded. I keep telling her by training she'll get rewarded if she tries to do things.

  • You by far have the best videos for trick training. I've watched other videos that used physical manipulation, and it was obvious how stressed the dogs were. It is really a joy to watch how happy your dogs are.

  • 1000 thumbs up from me! Thank you so much! My puppy is 6 months now... we haven't found a good obedience class yet, so I'm going to try your techniques! No punishments AT ALL!

  • I love ALL of our videos!! Thank you So much for making them and u are a great trainer! keep up the amazing work!!!!!!! :)

  • Ah, I love this video. All the others I found involved lifting up my dogs paw and teaching him from there to keep it in the air. I'm sure that, at some point, he'd understand, but this is much MUCH easier. He already knows paw, and therefore it'll be easier to teach a new trick by building up on something he already knows. Thanks so much. :)

  • Hi! First of all, I have tought my puppy quite a few of your tricks, and i have been dying to find out how to teach him to limp. I first saw this trick on a TV show, and the dogs owner first got it to play dead (bang) then said "Are you hurt?" and the dog did the limp command. When i watched your video, i was wondering when you add the voice command, because I would like to teach my puppy how to limp after he has played dead. I dont know when or how to add the voice command!

  • Mozart Clarinet Concerto!

  • how do i teach my dog to shake?

  • Border Collie?

I have one too....smartest dogs in the world :)

  • what is the cue word you are using in this video to get him to lift his paw? the word you are saying that sounds like "fly"?

  • Cool trick! Love it that you have Mozart's Flute & Harp Concerto playing in the background, too. :oD

  • I have been trying to teach my dog this trick and we are stuck he can do the limp pretty easy if he has his paw on my hand but i can not get him to do it with out my hand. my dog does not even put pressure on my hand so i know he is holding his own. How do I get him to do it with out me

  • incredible!!!! i cant wait until i start training my pup that. about how long did it take you. i have a 9 month old BC who usually gets tricks pretty fast

  • Thanks

  • Whats the cue? For left limp and right limp? i cant use left or right because theyre already being used

  • Thanks for posting these videos, I'm super excited. I had some tricks in mind for my doberman but now I'm all set to work on some that you've done. :)

  • I just put my foot wherever my dog wanted to put her paw. She didn´t want to step on my foot so she just kept her paw in the air. In the beginning I tried it this way, but she just walked one step, then put her paw up again, walked one step, then put her paw up again....

  • I have been trying to teach my dog thist rick and i have tried so many ways to teach him how (also followed the other vids from other people but i must say, yours is the most effective. My dog learned the trick and was able to step and least 2 steps after 2 days. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!

  • Very patient and a difficult fete for both. You're good at training for sure!

  • Hi Emily,

Thanks for all your tutorials! I have used them to teach Grace all of her tricks

I've just posted a vid of our progress so far. Still pretty experimental but we are definitely having fun!! Hope you like the footage of a winter's day on the beach in Australia

    :) Camilla

  • Wow, Splash picks up things real fast! :)

  • Can't wait to use this to screw with my vet!

  • I've worked with some of the so called "top" animal animal trainers in the filming industry. Their method of training the limp was to wedge a stone into the dog's paw & bandage it in. The result being a very painful foot & the dog genuinely limping. I saw many other cruel & upsetting training methods. You are so inspiring with a beautiful spirit, you put them to such shame. p.s how do I get my 2 yr dobie/rottie X rescue to stop snatching treats from my hand? He's a bit too keen!!

  • I believe you have the best dog training tutorials I've seen for advanced tricks like this :o I'm going to try it out!!

  • i feel bad for the the teddy bear being thrown around. so sad :-(

  • I wish my little Oreo will prefer other things than food as treat. I like your vids keep 'em coming you are really helpful. I'm a fan from the Far East....

  • kick ass

  • i wan to see much more from you and your dog!

  • awesome! looks like something my dog can do...been doing the old school way and she is not letting it click! Bet my Aussie will understand this technique better!

  • great dog....great trainer!! thanks. Happy new year!!!!

  • amazingggg job!:) you can tell how much you love Splash:) Splash is so talented, and he looks like a great dog.

  • What command would you recomend using for this? Limp doesn't work for both sides...

  • Amazing, I love it! That was a great method too! Your Splash is awesome, thanks for all the great tricks that you show us!

  • Awesome! I'm so teaching Kai that. Do you have a video for lifting back legs?

    ~~*Harper & Kai*~~

  • Great! Is it possible to add another step after this? Do you have any ideas of how to get your dog to do this without walking alongside it?

  • my dog can do it but he doesn´t walk with the 3 paws he walks with the 4 paws. do you have any tipps for me??

  • HAHA!!! You are brilliant! I like the part where splash took her first step and you hurled the stuffed toy immediately. HAHA!

  • 2:17..haha u just throw the stuffed animal against the wall lol; omg i can tell you adore splash sooo much! you are such a talented person^_^ you should be very proud of yourself! *clap clap*

im gonna train my dog to do tht; splash is looking great!keep it up !

  • This is easier than the old school way!!

My toy xolo, Tiku, didn't got it when we where training the old school way. We just started today and he is doing great!! Thanks for uploading this video!!!

  • This is really good--any ideas on how to make it look more natural like the movies? Like they are actually hurt (but not)?

  • You are really great at it.. i bought a lab. a weak ago and i've been tryin to train him and stuff, so far i have only been able to toilet train him.. as of now im working with on "gimme your paw"... ;)

  • Reading your desc about not restraining the dogs foot makes me think of teaching a dog to hold something in its mouth. Everything I've read said put the object in the dog's mouth and hold his/her mouth closed. My GSD WILL NOT tolerate that (I've tried, it was worthless) and I'm at a loss for teaching hold it. Do you have ANY ideas?

  • 2:22...... Has she pissed herself?

  • holy.crap. my dog can not live up to this LOL

  • ur hot lol

  • im starting this trick tonight with my dog, your dog is SOO cute!

  • So i guess doing this w/ my cogi is gonna be hard haha!

  • Check out Winniethecorgi (she put a video response to this video) !

  • Thank you very much for this video! I'm on my way teaching it to my dog.

    Your border is beautiful!

  • How long would this take if you were not working with a Border Aussie?

  • what do feed them , so they keep eating

  • why do i feel like my dog doesn't hear me at all? XD

  • lol air bud at the end

  • brava!

  • This IS a hard one. Mi and I are in process - she can do several steps gently leaning on my hand, and she is starting to 'get' holding it up on her own and stepping ever so slightly. I think we still have a lot of work ahead of us. . . but maybe not. . . we'll see.

    Mi & T

  • is your dog a border collie?

  • I love the breakthrough moment. Timing is everything.

  • Emily

This is an excellent video. I love the way you break it down.

    Thanks

  • Thank you ever so much for this!!

    xx

  • splash is fantastic....and also your video....

where is Splash from? Wich kennel? sorry for my english...i'm Italian... :D

Congratulation beautiful videos and gorgeus dog

  • THANKS, can not wait to make a video and show you our finished "limp", both my border collies are just about to take some steps, so we will see how it goes. So much fun to have clicker trained dogs, so much more fun for the person training and for the dog. You gave great instructions-

  • I really have no clue what a clicker dog trainer thingy is plz comment my page saying what a clicker is and why you do it. .i was wondering could you use a snapple cap. like if you click the clicker does it make your pet happy? or like what. because i have no clue what it is and im interested.please comment my page with answers.

  • when u first start training your dog it is good to teach them what a clicker it is basically just a piece of metal inside a plastic box thing that u press. But to teach ur dog to no wat the clicker means u hav them by you and just click then immediatly give a treat if u repeat this enough they will associate this sound with food and will be excited when they see u pull it out or hear u click it at lieast my bordercollie boy is.

    :^)

  • Question: how would you go about teaching them to offer a back paw? Teaching to offer a front was simple since it was fairly natural for him to paw for a C/T, but Im not sure how to get him to want to offer a back one. Any thoughts? :o)

  • Sweet trick! Good instructions. And your dog is lucky to have such a good trainer. :)

  • This is great, I'm going to teach my now. I used to look at this trick and think it was just for dogs in movies or super smart BCs because I never knew how to train it but now with this video, its given me a way to teach it to my dog so thanks!!

  • I'm going to try this with my Labrador. Hope I can show you her progress soon! Great video, I love your positive only method!

  • Como siempre ¡Genial!. Una semana sin conecctarme y me encuentro dos videos :-))

    Un beso.

  • Qué envidia más buena que me das;))

    Splash...fantástica como siempre

    Enhorabuena

  • Amazing! Keep bringing the great videos :-).

  • Awesome. Thanks for posting this. I tried teaching this with an older method but it never took. I will try this one. You say it was a hard trick to teach. How long did it take Splash to learn it?

  • I voted for you , I love your video's like always.

  • great job. this video is so awesome :-). keep it up

  • Great job Splash and Emily! I never thought to teach limp that way, never even tried to teach Shebang as I couldn't come up with a good method. I can't wait to try it with Savvy!

    Tammy

  • I wrote this on brokenangel, should of written it here.

    Emily,

I don't think you realize how much you are admired. It is amazing! You are an inspiration...Just accept this as fact.

    Keep bringing the great videos.

  • Great stuff. You rock.

    jg

  • Great video, and good job on the write up!!

  • Fan-damn-tastic video, Emily. Thanks for showing the WORLD the 'alternative' to old school training. you rock, girl

  • As my final result for this trick, i want to be able to have the dog in front of me by about 8 feet or so, and be able to give him the command. But every time i try to give him the command from any distance or any position than on his side, he goes back to my side right next to me than starts to perform the trick. sorry to ramble. so my question is, how can i get him to perform this without my hand being right above his paw and with him at a distance??? thanks

  • You could switch to him offering his paw to you from the front, and then add distance bit by bit. If you used a prop you could put the prop next to you dog and then start out further and further away from your dog and the prop. :) Im using this as a freestyle move, but it would also be cool as you said to have the dog limp towards you. I ll try that. :)

  • This is FABULOUS. I know it isn't as easy as you make it look and I like your method better than at least one other method I've seen used.

  • yes, thank you. i did try just that. practice in the front and using a prop. I'm at the point where i don't need to touch him but I'm still close and in the front. more practice and it'll be perfect. thank you, couldn't have done it without you :-)

  • YOU ARE AN AMAZING TRAINER!!! You have a wonderful patience and demeanor....I Love your vids....keep posting...us poochie lovers are watching and learning!

  • thats totally incredible.

    not only the limp trick

    but the ball head butting

splash would be awesome on the volleyball court!

  • that is her reward. :) I have to hide that ball in a closet.

  • Amazing. I've been wondering how to teach that without physical manipulation. You are very creative. Thank you!

  • Oh and by the way, your patience was inspiring for me when i felt myself becoming frustrated. And the section of the video where your excitingly praising splash (the "oh my goodness me", part) is just heartwarming. Its very easy to see just how much you love your dogs. A little more practice and I'll see if i can post a video response. But, thank you so so much, I'm defiantly subscribing.

  • I did get frustrated with this trick! Most tricks you can usually get some big steps by the end of the first lesson, but this one literally took 5 lessons before I felt we were making progress. I also got frustrated with 'sit pretty' because we needed to do a lot of lessons just to build up the muscle tone in the back to get the trick going.

  • Ive been dying to teach this trick to my 4 month old lab puppy, for a kind of finale to his other tricks, to be used with crawl and play dead (for a more impressive, be it more gory, play dead). Ive tried a few other methods and none of them worked very well for me. Ace just wanted to rest on my hand and i didn't know how to transition from me supporting him to him supporting himself. Well, i can not thank you enough because putting my hand vertical worked like a charm! You're amazing :-)

  • Always a new idea to try. Thanks for the great videos.

  • 5 star. great hands off alternative to the one shown by zakgeorge21

  • Wonderful video and another great trick to teach my dogs. Please keep the training video's coming.

  • Wow, soooo good! another 5 stars for this video!

  • Gamesaresuper-Dogs are treated like that in america and all over the world too, dont worry. AND it is now the fashion in america to choke, shock, startle dogs and even get them to attack eachother. 1-you could teach the dogs tricks while they are still inside the cage or 2- you could offer to clean the cages in order to do tricks with them. Obviously make sure your parents agree and are there to make sure its not a dangerous situation if they are not used to being out of their cages!:)

  • YEEEESSSS, GOOOOD DOG. AND GOOD TRAINER TOO!!!

    Five starts for you.

  • Great job on putting together the video, this was very much how I shaped my little sheltie to do this. We are working now on just getting the behavior from various positions. For a real challenge, I'd like to teach him to limp on the other foot, and then learn to hop back and forth, for doing a freestyle dance move!

  • WHAO SO COOL!!! i love new tricks

thank you very much ya know i'd like to go to a doggy class that teach tricks or agility but i don't think my parents would approve of it cuz they aren't dog lovers like me and they think of dogs as stupid animals cuz they bark for no reason but then i'm like well it's cuz ya keep them in there cages all day then they say they smell like poo and then i say it's cuz ya don't clean there cages and i'm in the Philippines right now so there's nothing i can do

  • That is in fact sooo simple....

    Thanks for that video!

I will try to teach Bluna "limp"! That is cool for party evenings...she'll be the star!

    More "how to teach" videos!!!!!

  • Great! You have my vote for Star Pet contest! :)

    5 stars! ;) Wooof! :))))

  • Also, good luck Splash! with the Star Pet contest. Pawlease, beat that bulldog;)!

    Woofs n' Wags,

    Ashley & Kaine

  • Thanks, and good luck to you too! as well as all the awesome trainers here on youtube :) AND congrats on Kaine's stardom in the Word Wide Fido Contest! He is an amazing dog!

  • fantastic!! Very good!

I'll Try it with Lunna and send you the video!

Thanks a lot for share your tricks with us.

    Greetings from Brazil!;o)

  • Awesome awesome awesome!! This is the first time I have seen a video about this way more "hands off" method - it's the same as I did for Dazzle. :) We're lovin' the videos, keep 'em coming!

  • Thanks! :) Dazzle has an awesome limp!

  • AWESOME!! This is exactly how I have been teaching Jesse how to limp, and he is picking it up soooo much faster than when I used the other methods(I have never heard of the methods in the info feild though, that's horrible!). I am so glad you posted this video, now others will have an awesome video to watch when starting this trick. 5*****!! ~Heather and Jesse~

  • Thanks! I am simply astounded by your newest trick! Getting Jesse to ride the rocking horse. So creative and brilliant! Yeah, I tried the paw holding technique with my beagle years ago, we both got annoyed and frustrated because it was taking too long.

  • 5 STARS! This is the BEST and COOLEST method of teaching limp. I will do this with Kaine and let you know how he does. We are still working on the pivoting:).

    Woofs n' Wags,

    Ashley & Kaine

  • Great stuff!!!! I love your ideas for training this without physical manipulation; don't think I've ever seen anyone do it without using those methods. I look forward to trying this one with Fuze as he gets older!

    Tracy

  • Thanks! I couldn't believe Fuze practicing sits and downs in a room full of cats trying to get his treats!
