if you are looking for a playlist version of this try 'salinas - straussmania' its not as good as deodatos, but it still rocks and you can use it in a playlist.
last week, this was available in a playlist. This week, no playlist play allowed. killjoys. Thats it, just go and ban all the best songs, what a fun job.
I bought this song when it was an 45lp. Later it was on our LP disk. This song, (in its sort version to fill up air-time) was a major hit . I still have the orginal LP ....... it is my fave .... check out side # 2 on the 45. Nice summer song ...........
My parents loved this song. It was playing on the radio when my mom was in labor with me. It was January of 1973 and it came on the radio as they drove into the parking lot of the hospital the day I was born. They parked the car and sat and listened to it through to the end and then went into the hospital to deliver me. I've loved it ever since. :)
For years, this was used as the opening theme for Memphis Wrestling. "Hello again everybody, Lance Russell along with Dave Brown bringing you another exciting hour of Championship Wrestling!"
This track would also suit the original The Taking of Pelam 1,2,3...Could have used it in opening shots of NYC...but its also a more sultry summery piece so if the film had been set in Summer maybe they would have used it....Ah, I'm wrong, don't matter.
Heard this on crap like Banzai and then heard it in 'Being There' with Peter Sellers-I basically laugh at the bit where Sellers spazzes it up big time leaving the house and walking into what looks like Harlem-a Honky looking like a Q Ball! This is such good music though-love it.
Haven't heard this piece in nearly 35 years - I think it sounds better now than then - maybe it's the fabricated reality TV "music" that reminds us what good stuff there was out there in the mainstream back then
The late Allison Steele, of WNEW-FM New York, used this piece as the center of three then really spacey tunes, starting with Lothar and the Hand People (Space Hymn), Deodato (Alzo Sprach Zarathustra), and David Bowie (Space Oddity) on her Friday night midnight-hour program in 1973. Fire one up, let's go!!
Eumir Deodato, Hermeto Pascoal, Eguiberto Gismonti, Dom Salvador.... esses caras são gênios, mestres maiores da música mundial. Viva o talento brasileiro.
The band Phish has been playing ASZ in this style, very much a tribute to Deodato's excellent arrangement of the classic, since the early 1990s. It has occasionally served as a centerpiece to an entire concert. But I suspect many of their fans have no knowledge of this. *THIS* Phish fan does!
wow i was just thinking about this song the other day i remember this album cover when i was a kid back in the 70ths when i was a kid i put this song on with my uv black light on and i had painted fluorescent stars on my ceiling were glowing with the uv black light and poster wow that was the 70ths lol good song
Heck I'm hearing Gary Wright's Dream Weaver in the start of this song....I'm nearly 100% sure that Gary heard this before writing Dream Weaver....or he heard the music of someone else who heard this....or he heard some other piece of music that Deodato also based his music on....or whatever:-)
@kasteman1 friends mom just asked if i was ok all the sudden. i said yes im hanging out in space right now ill send you the link so you can join. she said she was making sure bc 2 ppl are dead at virginia tech 15 min away from my school but shes on her way to check it out haha
Early Fusion music, but no one was calling that at the time ! Disco beat with classical arrangement. Barrry White Love Orchestra did something similar with an instryumental.
It always fun listening to this song when your driving into a big city at night. I live in a rural area, but everytime I go to downtown I have this song playing!
Some people don't realize this was written by Holst. But Deodata's rendition is incredible. Listen to Nights in White Satin aswell - like modern classic rock in classical form, and with a Fender Strat! Imagination it takes to build music like that.
I think the original music is by Richard Strauss, isn't it? Eumir Deodato's arrangement is very good indeed except for Eumir's own very last cadence (Ab, Bb, C) which takes away the enormous power of the Strauss original (Am, G, C) just preceeding it. If only Richard Strauss had access to YouTube from his musical heaven he maybe would drop us a line letting us know what he thinks of Eumir Deodato's rendition. Maybe he's tapping his conductor baton to the beat of Billy Cobham's groove.
This song is wicked! I remember was on the radio, something else sounded like it. One of the few times when jazz was heard on AM radio...The short version that is.
Far Out! I hadn't heard this one since back in the seventies, until I watched "Being There" the other day. I cannot believe they played it in its entirety. I can barely remember watching 2001 Space Odyssey decades ago, but I don't think it was played completely. Thanks for this one Rovingeye2.
