I live in shitty Cyprus where you barely get real snow in our only mountain "range" Troodos and believe it or not I've never had a snowball fight..;/ If it snows this year when I move to the UK I act like a child.
some people need to remember that london is one of the warmest and driest places in the uk! this wouldnt be classed as a lot of snow up north (we had 6 ft drifts surrounding our house in queensbury last november) but i guess thats quite a lot for london :)
A lot of snow to me, 3CM I usually get but this year we got about a foot of snow! and We had lying snow on Xmas day! But I would really like an official white Christmas I live in North Wales... I wish we had all that snow in Febuary 2009 When I came over us it started heavyish for about an hour it snowed really heavy and proper dry stuff to by then we had had around 10cm of snow but as the night went on the snow just kept getting wetter untill in the end it rained... :(
For those that may think that this isn't much, you have to remember that London is a large, densely populated city - which, in comparison to surrounding areas is fairly warm. Also, more generally as a country, we are a very mild place and rarely do we see heavy dumps of snow anywhere except over higher ground... like the Cairngorms in Scotland and/or the Lake District or the downs in England. Although, saying that - it was pretty pathetic how London ground to a hault - we had a foot up north!
@IamCreature1 And Americans, Canadians, Russians, Norweigians would all laugh at you for thinking 44 inches a lot. Where do you draw the line at what is a lot and what is not?
This is a fucking lot for London. I think everyone is aware it isn't Scotland and I think everyone is aware that Scotland is colder.
It is because of times like this that I allow my children to use 0800mumdad reverse call charges for emergencies. I am comforted by the thought that they can ask me for much needed help and assistance anytime even if they don't have phone credits.
how can the UK beat 2.5ft ya fool? its not a competition. its about global positioning, if we could move the country north then maybe. a foot of snow is a shitload in 1 storm for the UK.
when we do get snow its rare to get an amount that causes major problems, thats why the authorities dont waste money to prepare for it every year, theres no point.
when it does happen the country cant cope with it and comes to a standstill. its rare tho.
In the UK, I suppose on average any city will get about 4-8" per year, maybe slightly less, just North of London we only had about 1 big snowfall between 2001-2006, but in the last 12 months, we've had at least 3 big falls of +6".
When I went to the Alps a few years ago, you could get an extra inch by the time you got to the top of the ski lift.
leicester had about 4 inches, but everything carried on as normal for me, work and all, but nothing like when i was a kid, used to get a foot plus of snow,
really :o I live in South England and we Rarely get snow, If we even have 0.5cm of snow everything closes, schools ect. We had 1.5cm of snow though this year :D
Doooode if if, if I had like a, a magic wand I'd turn it all into coke, shit like that would like like, like WHAT??? Ooozat!!!??? SHHH there's some one coming........
Didn't you get like 8 inches or something? At least by what the news people were talking about, it looked like the entire city was shut down. That was exactly what happened here in Cary, North Carolina. We got 9 inches on inauguration day and no one could get anywhere.
yer im from Liverpool, England which is one of the most mildest places in the UK and it snowed here which was about 2-4inchs are coldest temp i have see here where i am is around -7C (celsius) around 18F (Fahrenheit) and btw its probbly not even been that
guys... just because it snowed, it doesn't mean that global warming is a myth. Global warming doesn't just cause warming- its simply causes more extreme weather patterns.
Honestly, here in London, it isn't as cold as you would expect. Once you get to the snow, it gets very cold, gloves are needed, and stuff. But not as cold as you would expect, not like -17c or anything. Though, it is freezing. But not really freezing. By the way, what country are YOU from?
What i don't understand is that, if England gets snow everything is a drama and roads get blocked and places come to a stand still. However, if you go to scotland you never get stand stills and blocked roads unless it's severe blizzads. England should get ready for these kind of things. If scotland can, England can too. It's not too far away!
why does london license plate say the number only shouldn 't they have like london written on the car license plate e.g.new york empire state i dun get that ...........?
Not really, it was much colder and snowier in the 1980s. This kind of snowfall is expected every so often in London, there was just a big gap since the last one in 1991! Just a few dustings of an inch or two in between really.
yeah i know but back then was a time with low solar activity and those years had a low number of el ninos. both of these factors started picking up during the nineties causing higher temps. since the sun has entered a very quiet period i thing there is going to be a cooling trend in the next few decades.
8" of snow in capital is quite a dumping and it is nice for those who haven't seen snow. When did London last see snow like that? Bear in mind the UK has Gulf stream or NAO. All we get are dustings or a couple cm but this is like a foot of snow in places. In Devon we have two dumpings of snow. On 2 Feb we had some powdery snow of 10cm's then 5 to 6th Feb we had up to 20cm - 25cm "8 -10" [wet snow]. Okehampton, Exmoor, Dartmoor saw 60cm or half a metre of snow - looked like an Alpine village!
on that day i live in the mores and near my m8ts housewe live in the pennines and it was 6ft after all the snoww cz we built a mint snow cave and it was 2 - 3f on our street 8 inches is nothing 8 inches fell in 3 hours
And that got less than Aviemore in the Highlands, and Dalwhinnie which saw nearly -20'C and Inverness which never went above -4'C for a week near Hogmanay, bla bla bla.
London looked beautiful in this very rare snow, can't see why we can't all accept that.
As one of the three world cities (alongside Tokyo and New York), a lot more people were watching London than Yorkshire.
