Alan could've played Angel. 1st a sweet, innocent looking blond being a vamp, HOT body if you missed Death at a Funeral and then his portrayal of Alpha on Dollhouse! His range, dialect capabilities, etc never lets me down. In certain scenes in Serenity u can tell Nathan has great depth, not anger but inner pain that is not called upon often but can glimpsed at the right time. Firefly had so many character archs to explore & each actor capable!! Inara's death, Book's secrets....We were robbed!

@silfuryn yeah fux did things like that. Look how the treated the show that kept them afloat and helped them rise through the early years "Married with Children" They didn't even get a final episode. Heck Ed O'neil didn't find out about the cancelation till two fans came up to him to console him for it being canceled.

Also, not mentioned here, Nathan did a fantastic job at the end of season 7 on Buffy. He played an INCREDIBLE villian and I hated him so much that I almost never watched Firefly after my son told me that he was the main character. But I'm so glad I finally came around. I really think Firefly coulda been a better show than Buffy OR Angel the Series. That's saying a lot cuz I LOVE watching all 7 seasons of Buffy over and over again. *is insane*

Trust me, I love Buffy, but it doesn't hold a candle to Firefly. Firefly is the greatest of all time.

Well anyhow, I actually love Firefly even more then Buffy and Angel, despite the fact I do love both those shows, and also despite Firefly's very unfortunate short run. It was, and will forever be an amazing show, with amazing characters, and a truly unique experience.

And you're so right about Nathan, wow can he play a great bad guy. o-o Man has talent, to be able to portray so many different characters, and believably.

@Anjalena I didn't see Nathan as Caleb until after I saw him as Mal which makes it hard to look at and get your brain in the right thought pattern, but you're right Nathan played eveil well. Many times we can't picture a change or a first casting but it's only b/c of what we're used to after many years. I'd like to see audition tapes of different actors, especially when they try for 1 character then get cast as a different one. Firefly will always rate as #1 in my tv book!

Yeah, Nathan would not have made a good Angel. He made a great Mal, though.

Nate Fillion is not a fit for a flatter character like angel, he does not look or sound right. He does great as Mal though, he balances serious/sarcastic and warm/funny really well.

Exactly, plus had Nathan been cast as Angel...It's highly likely he would NOT have gotten to be Mal. In my honest opinion, Mal is Joss's best character ever. I'd rather see Nathan play Mal than Angel. Besides, Boreanaz did a fine job as Angel.

Two great characters, two great guys. Huzzah!(sp? lol)

Don't pay any attention to them. Mal is the lead chracter of the tv show Firefly and the movie Serenity made after it. Mal was played by Nathan Fillion. Both were works of Joss Whedon.

If you haven't already, you so need to watch Firefly and Serenity.

I'm fairly sure that it's Kelly Wheeler, assistant to producer Gareth Davies. She was on some DVD special features and I recognized her voice.

I think Joss mentioned that he wanted David to try out as Mal. David couldn't take the part because he was already doing Angel and didn't want to be on two shows at once. Jokingly, Joss said that another reason why David didn't take the part was because he's afraid of chickens, which do appear in the pilot.

@littleewok51 Wouldn't David have already been working on Bones when Firefly was in production? Wait, I'll actually not be lazy and look..nope, way off on that. Bones was 2006 and Firefly was 2002. Being a late comer to Firefly, not a fan til release of Serenity- now keep copy of each in firebox...I do forget that Firefly is almost 10 years old!  Glad they changed actress playing Inara. Not enough sex appeal for 1st choice.
