he really had a huuuuuuuge voice. great instrument. and the legend and himself said: he was a very light tenor in his begginings. with melocchi he enlarged his voice. i really enjoyed this performance but he doubt himself at the end and make a lower note! you can notice how he goes to the front to take impulse and he doubt and make a lower note, but he holds it for a eternity. hear that the orchestra was higher, thats what makes me think he doubt.
Mi dispiace per gli amanti Belliniani che gridano allo scandalo nel sentire il canto di Del Monaco...ma l'unico modo per rendere al meglio Pollione è il canto declamato, e chi meglio di Mario può far questo? Credo nessuno...infatti in tutte le Norme interpretate dal grande tenore ha lasciato un'impronta della sua arte a un livello storico...certo, ci sono stati altri grandi Pollione ma nessuno con quel carisma...saluti
devo dire che la voce è il modo in cui canta Del Monaco è molto eccitante! Una esibizione senza remore, non si risparmia ed ottiene un risultato molto spettacolare. pero' il personaggio ed il fraseggio musicale sono primitivi e senza fascino. a parte la performance tutta basata sulla prestanza vocale e l'esibizione tecnica, che sono davvero eccezionali, non si puo' certo dire che ci sia molto altro.
Certo che dal vivo doveva essere un'esperianza incredile!
@federic017 Preciso! Se mi capitasse di assistere ad una performance come questa, sarei molto felice! Le mie esigenze in quanto spettatore, sono molto semplici. Mi piace emozionarmi e credo che cantanti come Del Monaco sapessero dare grandi emozioni. Detto questo, ascoltando le registrazioni, si puo' riflettere su altri dettagli. A mio avviso, Del Monaco non poteva cantare diversamente, per ragioni vocali. Questo non vuol dire che non sia possibile cantare Pollione diversamente!

Una gestualità efficace, da vero cantante/attore, che ha reso Del Monaco il grandissimo che è stato, oltre la eccezionale vocalità! Unico, impercettibile neo, la nota del "abbatterò" finale emessa non nella estensione consueta, ma tuttavia compensata dalla formidabile "tenuta" di parecchie battute che egli sembra "scagliare" addosso al pubblico, sicuramente estasiato. Interpretazione sicuramente leggendaria!

Einfach grandios. Hier war er 52 Jahre alt mit einer nach wie vor unglaublichen Stimme, ein einziges Kraftwerk. Ich wünschte, ich hätte ihn einmal live erleben dürfen. Es ist schön, dass es Musikliebhaber wie Onegin65 gibt, die diese Schätze mit uns teilen.
Ok, non sarà molto espressivo quanto a filati e canto di grazia, ma ha una potenza entusiasticamente dirompente e dei fiati pazzeschi!!!! E' come dovessimo paragonare una Delta S4 con un'auto da rally odierna: la nuova è molto maneggevole, ma la potenza della prima annichilisce tutto il resto!

One of the rare instances when NOT singing an optional high note (Bb I think) is more exciting than doing so. That climactic final phrase is just amazing. I'd like to have his lungs and support. O_O
What I don't get is why some people seem to think he didn't have those high notes (see this and the nessun dorma comments). Coloraturafan put up some Chenier finale clips, and MDM was among them, singing the same high notes as everyone else (Merritt, etc.). And kicking their asses, I might add ;D
It sometimes seems that way. The repertoire is difficult and intensive, I know; but some such as Melchior lasted well. There haven't been that many really dramatic tenors (at least not prominent ones) in recent history though... the technique these guys used variations of (MDM, Corelli, Giacomini) seems by it's nature to tend to wear at the voice a bit prematurely maybe cuz its so muscular?? couldn't say.
Right. Well, as to why, my first thought is that there is a lot more pressure and stress on the vocal folds, and I mean even using great technique.
This is countered by the fact that more dramatic voices have thicker folds which can take more abuse, so they can also last longer with proper singing. But time defeats us all.
You have something there about the muscles too...as we get older, those get less flexible and resilient, hurting us all but most important in a dramatic voice.
Most tenors would kill for that sound as well. Another thing I notice about Del Monaco is his stage presence; when he sings, he actually appears strong and masculine, but graceful at the same time. That sort of strength is probably what made his singing so thrilling.
I disagree. He sounds baritonal as a tenor.. and his si puo is very interesting..but he was a real tenor for sure.. he couldn't really pass for a baritone..
That's pure muscle singing. MDM is my second favorite singer behind Caruso. This recitativo and aria is extremely difficult to sing for a Muscle Tenor. My only criticism of MDM is that he chose to sing forte as his default dynamic-he could have come the closest to Caruso imho, had he exerted some discipline at large. He had too many gifts at his disposal and chose what suited his personality.

Del Monacos posture has to do with his support. Hes producing sound. When he stands with his legs together ,when hhe has one foot on one step and another on another step. Watch him when he is approaching a high note how he uses his posture to sypport his voice.

Despite the impressive voice, I find everything in his way of singing, attitude, posture(let's not even mention the final bows...), held high (not SO high..) notes etc etc quite annoying.
As is your preference, but held high notes don't make a tenor. When you are a tenor of this quality, why not take a bow. Personally this was the greatest tenor ever. Caruso, Gigli and Bjorling trail in his wake. Di Stephano, Corelli, Domingo and Pavarrotti don't come close. As I say, personal preference and I've not heard this recording bettered by any tenor.
You can take a bow after you sing an aria in a concert, in a recital. This is a full production of an opera, not a solo recital.
I respect your opinion that del Monaco was the "greatest tenor ever" but I am so far from your opinion. Great voice, yes but thats' it. Those notes held forever to me show no respect for the score, for musical taste AND for the collegues (see other excerpts).
And if you think that this is the best version you ever heard of this aria and cabaletta, well....no comment!
"WOW!!!" He will always B my favorite Dramatic Tenor! Although he doesn't sing the Bflat @the end, just listening 2his voice that cuts like a knife(cuts through any orchestra 4sure!)...he's 1 in a million! Most of the other melocchi tenors sound more like Corelli(?)2 closest that have come R Cecchele & Limarilli.

If I listen to recorded performances, I prefer Corelli; or better, Martinelli. But having heard Corelli and Del Monaco in the theater, I would hasten to hear MDM way before FC. He was one of the very few genuinely thrilling tenors I have ever seen on stage, with visceral impact to his voice.
Perhaps so. But from your singling out age, I imagine that you yourself may never have heard these tenors on stage, and therefore can't judge how valid my comment may be. I'm grateful to have had the chance to see and hear Del Monaco, di Stefano, Bjoerling, and even (in a master class near the end of his life) Martinelli, as well as the current crop of tenors; and I regret for you that you seem not to have enjoyed the same good fortune.

Yeah I don't know either. He had great high notes! He did tend sometimes (especially later in his career) to hit high notes a bit under pitch though.

Well, as commented on just posted Caballe videos ( from 1988), you can't stay flawless forever!
I haven't seriously studied his technique, though...but I think the more dramatic the tenor, the shorter the opera career....

Del Monacos posture has to do with his support. Hes producing sound. When he stands with his legs together ,when hhe has one foot on one step and another on another step. Watch him when he is approaching a high note how he uses his posture to sypport his voice.

Despite the impressive voice, I find everything in his way of singing, attitude, posture(let's not even mention the final bows...), held high (not SO high..) notes etc etc quite annoying.

As is your preference, but held high notes don't make a tenor. When you are a tenor of this quality, why not take a bow. Personally this was the greatest tenor ever. Caruso, Gigli and Bjorling trail in his wake. Di Stephano, Corelli, Domingo and Pavarrotti don't come close. As I say, personal preference and I've not heard this recording bettered by any tenor.

You can take a bow after you sing an aria in a concert, in a recital. This is a full production of an opera, not a solo recital.
I respect your opinion that del Monaco was the "greatest tenor ever" but I am so far from your opinion. Great voice, yes but thats' it. Those notes held forever to me show no respect for the score, for musical taste AND for the collegues (see other excerpts).
And if you think that this is the best version you ever heard of this aria and cabaletta, well....no comment!

"WOW!!!" He will always B my favorite Dramatic Tenor! Although he doesn't sing the Bflat @the end, just listening 2his voice that cuts like a knife(cuts through any orchestra 4sure!)...he's 1 in a million! Most of the other melocchi tenors sound more like Corelli(?)2 closest that have come R Cecchele & Limarilli.

This is awesome!! At 3:08 "e AMMMMMMMMMMMMMor"!! That was just a volcano and wall of sound! I am sure people in the 10th row may have had hearing difficulties for a bit after that!!! Thanks for posting this!

If I listen to recorded performances, I prefer Corelli; or better, Martinelli. But having heard Corelli and Del Monaco in the theater, I would hasten to hear MDM way before FC. He was one of the very few genuinely thrilling tenors I have ever seen on stage, with visceral impact to his voice.

Perhaps so. But from your singling out age, I imagine that you yourself may never have heard these tenors on stage, and therefore can't judge how valid my comment may be. I'm grateful to have had the chance to see and hear Del Monaco, di Stefano, Bjoerling, and even (in a master class near the end of his life) Martinelli, as well as the current crop of tenors; and I regret for you that you seem not to have enjoyed the same good fortune.
