Jordan has over 6 million inhabitants and honor killings do not exceed 20 cases a year and so those behaviors are being faught against fiercely and hardly by the community. Statistics always put facts in perspective. 7out of 10000 are killed in US annually, honor killing in Jordan is 20 cases to 6 million a year, that is 210 times higher rate in US!! speaking of retards, backwardness and savages, USA paves the way. i had the pleasure of speaking with Rana when i was in Jordan in 2004 and i commend her for the work she is doing with this issue.

i think there should be more of an explanation of the honour and shame mindset. i speak about this and include this as i believe it is vital to understand the mindset behind this issue as much as it is to understand the issue itself - in order to bring about change from within the community.

my friend took of her head cover (hijab) and her dad told her he was going to kill her and he took her back to Syria, my dad threatend the same thing. And my other friend was caught near the mall by her dad with her boy friend and she wasnt wearing a head cover so her dad grabbed her and started choking her, he didn't kill her but he did take her home and her uncle beat her, and they made her spend time in a mental hospital and were going to send her to an islamic school but havent yet.

I know that some lean on the hadiths to justify just about anything, or prohibiting, but then again the Qur'an tells to disregard and not follow the hadiths... so, anyone should ask him/herself really carefully - what is it to be? Follow the Qur'an or sayings from men?

Honor killings are mostly a phenomenon among tribal societies where one woman's action is seen as reflecting on an entire tribe. In muslim countries with both tribal and non-tribal peoples like Turkey and Iran, it happens almost exclusively among the tribal people.

Nobody said non-tribal people have no honor (!) or that "only" tribal people do it. And I was speaking mainly of Turkey. But the pressure to kill a girl for such an action is much greater when it is seen as reflecting on an entire tribe or large extended family than on just an immediate family. There is some discrimination against Kurds in Turkey to be sure, but "töre", the honor code, is much older than that.

I believe that it should be considered equal to other murders. Killing a woman because she has been raped, for leaving a husband who beats her, or because she tries to be with the person she chooses, is not acceptable to most people here any more. Neither is pressuring a minor (who will receive a shorter sentence) to kill his own mother or sister. Men abuse, cheat on their wives constantly, but if a woman even complains she is in danger. This is honorable?
