Thanks for posting...I don't think I've ever heard a Donizetti opera before. You're right, it sounds quite similar to a Verdi opera. Just read the synopsis on Wikipedia...talk about romantic complications between these four characters!
Thomas Allen is in obviously very good voice here despite the slightly muffled sound quality.
Thanks for posting this! Great performance that was - "only" in concert but with plenty of sparks flying around. I even liked La Scola, though he normally leaves me cold.
I agree about the sparks. As for La Scola, I'm only familiar with him because of a live performance, and I wish he had been half as good as he is here.
Judging from this performance he's a excellent LYRIC tenor. He doesn't sound so fine in his later recordings - too many too heavy roles in between, I think.
I saw him 17 years after this performance was recorded - that's ample time for a tenor to make the wrong repertoire choices. He was singing Pollione, which I've always associated with heftier spinto voices.

I hope you're enjoying Donizetti. I'm not a big fan of bel canto dramas, but I have to admit this one has some hair-raising moments.
