@darrylmueller Addl reply:Nichols has no sense of honor or accountability to the gen taxpayer. @philnoll Electric cars run on coal. Most of the US electricity is generated by coal. Production of electric cars and their batteries (cadmium and lithium) cause more pollution than they prevent. Widespread use of electric cars will cause blackouts. Currently tax dollars are subsidizing the cost of electric cars yet they are still only affordable by the rich who want the appearance of "being green".
@philnoll See the CARB and So Bay ARB missions statements(on line).. both want people in closer to where they work, live[more]commune like, telecommute, use other modes of transportation, walking or bicycles(see City of L.A. itis implementing bike pathways that take away from traffic areas on the streets). Essentially, they want the 'little' people out of their cars(and maybe motorcycles), while the politicians and the rich continue to ride in the carbon polluting vehicles. Basically, CONTROL.
The fact that Mary Nichols did not fire Hien Tran say it all. We know what happens when you lie you get fired. In this case Nichols & Tran should have been fired!
@darrylmueller Thk u 4 ur succinct words. I hve bn following CARB and the calculating, dictatorial Nichols' insanity for months, from an L.A. afternoon talk show, I have listened to for years, on 640. It is understood that Tran would not be fired as his "scientific" data was an aid in advancing Nichols' agenda. The data related to an entirely different geographic location and from a different time period. The then, Gov "Arnold" and then A.G. Brown r on th same controlling ,political sheet.
There are plenty of Californians I know who are sick and tired of the high taxes and regulations that are killing jobs... the problem is they're in the minority. Props to that minority for trying to make a positive difference, but the majority of Californians are stupid for voting in politicians and favoring policies that result in self-destruction.
Also on another note, if these truckers cannot afford to keep the old rig or cannot afford a new one, there will be less trucks...The enviro nuts will love that...So how will the enviro nuts get their food, how will they get daily living supplies..Basically fewer trucks will equal empty shelves or the product being shipped will be so expensive the demand for the product will drop..All in all, laid off truckers, laid off workers. Follow the money and see who really benifits from this..
Check out "economic leakage" staff report of May 2010 ( do a search) that would happen by AB 32 tell's all about business leaving the state. Lots of heavy equip sold for cheep and gone for ever. Political Correctness gone crazy, Oh yes Unions sat back and did nothing to help contractors, now those jobs are gone!
How many die from gang shootings in Cali.....??? The new truck exhaust sytems are a joke...Truckers cannot afford to keep a new truck running...When one of these new exhaust systems fails, you better have a warranty, if not, it cost thousands and thousands to fix the truck...As in this vid says 15 grand for the exhaust section...The EPA is killing us financially...If we are all broke and starving, who is going to care about the environment anyway..
The greenie nut jobs in wacky-fornia need to go hump a tree. Both food and clothes don't just magically appear in the stores. If they continue to shit on truck drivers they will drive business out of California.Guess they want everyone to live like "Little House on the Prairie".
what they do not cover is the subsidies that california laid out offering a zero intrest loan, a 150 percent market value retirement payment for the old trucks, and 90 percent payment of the new tucks. all this paid for by a small shipping fee of 12 dollars per shipping container. The jobs vs environment argument was created by the long beach port authority so that it could have leverage in a bill to expand the ports of long beach in to the neighborhoods of west long beach.
@scarczak You think it's a good thing that as a result of bad environmental legislation, the Californian tax payer now has to pay for all the now-worthless trucks? Wow, time to enroll in economics 101.
mr furyobongos state , you state that "these bureaucrats don't give a rats ass about private business or the economy..." I was wondering what led you to this conclusion
These bureaucrats don't give a rats ass about private business or the economy, all they care about is their cushy job with no accountability and lavish retirement benefits.
Liberal lackey quisling collectivists have put a stranglehold on CA. You people are nothing but scum and it is politics before science. You will feel the pain eventually when you are hoisted by your own petards when the masses rebell. You are all stinking scum sucking on Jerry Brown's Johnson...
I feel like people against global warming today are like Copernicus was a long time ago. You know that crazy guy that went against the common knowledge that the solar system orbited the earth and not the sun. The only difference is we now have a government with checks and balances so we can't order his death, but you can bet they sure can fire him for doing his job.
@thebestsumoeva How can anyone be "against global warming." I think the earth is warming due to mostly natural causes, but man probably does play a role. This video wasn't about climate change; it was about pollution controls based on politicized science.
@joepeeler34 I think if you talked to any of the people who put together these "pollution controls" you will find a strong correlation between that idea and the global warming agenda.
@joepeeler34 Those of us that question ABG question exactly what actual contributions humans have made to this phenomenon. There's nothing wrong with that. Science is ABOUT making hypotheses and questioning findings.
@thebestsumoeva You mean like the huy in the video was fired for doing his job? There's really no comparison to Copernicus. Copernicus was a scientist who went against religious superstition and authority to defend a scientific fact based upon observation. Those of us who question ABG do so on the basis of some flawed science that was/is intentionally skewed because of bias. Actually, if anything, because we question ABG, WE are more like Copernicus.
@Ovedya2006 You have already proven yourself biased by calling any science that goes against the misconception that CO2 is destroying the planet "flawed science". Hypothesis is not science and there is next to no raw evidence supporting AGW. The best we have is theories and fear mongering with some statements on trends that have been occurring for thousands of years. Man made global warming can easily be shown to be incorrect, it is just unfortunate that there are so may closed minded people.
Making hypotheses is an essential part of the scientific process. Even questioning the "facts" is a part of that process. The further along science gets in the process of studying global warming the more discoveries are being made which disprove the assumption of humans as the primary cause. It's for this reason that there is disagreement in the scientific community.
@Ovedya2006 I will agree that hypothesis is part of the process but imo it is not really science until it is proven. An hypothesis with no proof is simply an opinion. Making judgments based off opinions is a huge logical fallacy as well.
@thebestsumoeva In my estimation science IS the entire process. While hypothesis is an opinion it can be based on known facts (and usually are). The science of AGW is not really established because it's still evolving. Most of science is still evolving, and should be, because without that process we don't learn anything new. Consider the 12-year-old that is about to disprove the Theory of Relativity. Aside from being a case study himself, if he's right, he'll cause a scientific revolution.
@Ovedya2006 A hypothesis is not the entire scientific process at all. Any one can make an observation and come up with a theory based off it, but it isn't credible until it is proven experimentally. As a physics research assistant I can tell you there are thousands of theoretical papers on various quantum processes that get disproved by experiments everyday. Should we destroy our economies every time someone has a theory that can't be proven?
@thebestsumoeva Please re-read what I wrote. I didn't say that hypothesis is the ENTIRE scientific process. I was defining "science" as "the entire scientific process." So when you refer to "the science of AGW," for example, you are describing the entire process in which certain theories, facts, etc. are derived.
@Ovedya2006 BTW you can't really prove Einstein wrong, his theories have been experimentally verified to a large degree. At best you can make a correction to his theory but it still doesn't take away from the predictive power that has already been shown to be true. Einstein did not prove Newton wrong so much as he made a correction at high energy/velocity. Newtons equations are true for 99% of what we see everyday...
If you follow the relgious groups the world is ending on May 21st 2011, If you follow Aztecs the world end in 2012. so why do people give a damn about the enviorment....if the world if over does it matter what we do in the next 20 months?
@CasperCee Why do we keep calling them liberals when they are very illiberal in the classical sense of the word? They are the totalitarian left. They don't get upset when you misidentify them as liberals. They do get upset when you correctly identify them as democratic socialists or the totalitarian left though.
Let's all stop identifying them as liberals. It is libertarians that are truly liberal. Why do they get to expropriate a very moral term?
In California, heavy duty trucks are the biggest polluters among goods movement sources, contributing close to 650 tons of NOx per day in 2001, more than all other goods movement sources combined.
Statewide, heavy duty trucks released close to 37 tons per day of cancer-causing diesel particulate matter in 2001.
(California Air Resources Board, Emissions Reduction Plan for Ports and Goods Movement in California, 2006)
@intellectable Yes, but how do we balance less pollution with reductions in living standards? Everythign we do causes pollution. Poverty correlates to lower life expectancy and a greater chance of engaging in unhealthy life styles and susceptibility to disease. Govt. is making people poorer. I think the calculus is all wrong. Other costs are being ignored. I think the science is in dispute and isn't being weighed properly. I think the govt. is overzealous. Are we killing more people that saving?
@intellectable How do I "link" them together? I have simply stated a principle that can only be arrived at through abstract reasoning. The physical sciences must be governed by philosophy. It is a fact that poverty correlates to lower standards of living and an increased incidence rate of disease and other health problems. This should be weighed in any policy measures taken. It is simply disregarded by the world-improvers. Those who advocate govt. force have the burden of proof.
Are you not essentially saying if one where to drive 100,000,000 diesel trucks through a "rich" neighborhood per year that it would have differing affects then driving the same trucks through a "poor" neighborhood?
In the Health Sciences and Medical industries the burden of proof is to first and foremost establish that a chemical agent is safe for exposure/consumption.
Is it coincidental that Europe has high standards of living and higher forms of health and safety regulations?
@intellectable Eccessive environmental regulations create more poverty and disproportionately hurt the existing poor.
All chemicals, minerals, and elements are toxic in excess. If you drink too much water it is toxic to your system. What science is concerned with is the concetration and length of exposure to toxins. Much of what you eat has trace elements of arsenic, lead, and other harmful carcinogens, but they are only harmful at certain concentrations and periods of exposure.
@intellectable Why didn't you tell your roommate to stop? Why didn't you move?
My problem is that the science is being driven by politics.
Do you drive a car or bicycle? Do you live in a house or a hut off the grid? Do you own a television? You have polluted my environment if you answered yes to any of these questions. If environmentalism is your highest value then your home is an abomination. You think there are absolute solutions when it a question of trade-offs.
@intellectable Since when is USAtoday a scientific magazine? Since when is looking at biased reporting that gets its sources from corrupt individuals a goal of society? Since when did we abandon our values and freedoms all to solve a problem that doesn't exist?
I found this report very sobering and revealing. There seems to be good case made here that CARB and UCLA have real interconnections that essentially means universities can unelectedly control political policies. The mere demotion of Tran by CARB, whilst threatened removal of Enstrom from UCLA reflects a model of behaviour of a possible new undemocratic elitist power structure.
California is the only state that has an A.R.B. It's just a job pork barrel. The rest of the states just use the info from the Federal A.R.B. Ca. doesn't have the slightest appreciation of how may jobs they are killing. Sure, the air is better. The FED level of A.R.B.would have been fine for that. This is the Japanese approach. Make everybody buy a new truck and it will boost the economy. 1/4 of Ca. pollution blows in from China.
Carbs and Pollution are not the same thing. For instance there's noise pollution, Water pollution, air pollution etc all of which could be cleaned up! But carbon pollution is a different matter. its not man made, its a natural process which has been occurring for millennia. We would die without it.. When we have all planets in our solar system undergoing climate change ...answer me this .. who or what is the cause of that
Well we have the same *problem* here in Europe, 'fine dust' they call it...... Causing several thousend deaths a year in The Netherlands alone. These casulties only exists in the computermodels of the environmental movement (just like global warming). The latest joke there trying to pull on us comes from the EU, they don't want anyone to drive a diesel or gasoline car in urban areas in 30 years.

Our EPA has been infiltrated by Communists! Communists HELL bent on destroying American small business! We must FREEZE all new EPA regulations until we clean house. Remember to get out and VOTE on November 8, 2012.
Generally, I like enviromental regs especially air quality regs. But come on Cali, this is way too much. This is the reason why regs should be made by the legislature not unelected(?) & unaccountable boards, agencies, & commissions. If they are obviously needed you should have no problem getting the votes.
Is there anything we can do to help Dr. Enstrom? This saddens me. Why are we protecting bureaucrats jobs and firing scientists? Why does it take someone far removed from government to find out if someone has a PHD or not? If Dr. Enstrom can keep his job, we are that much closer to saving the livelihoods of business owners such as Mr. Whitney.
Sounds like a whole bunch of trucking companies will be avoiding California in the future. Sorry, Californians, you need to make your own products because nobody will be carting them in to your state. Also, sorry, but nobody out side California will be purchasing your products because you can't ship them there.
The Leftie/Marxist lunatics are slowly strangling this Country to death. Kill the oil rig jobs, kill the fishing jobs, kill these jobs. Till everybody is dependent on BigObama and his wife the FOOD CZAR.
@meandale The weather. Think about it, if this shit was happening in Maine or Minnesota, there would be a mass exodus. You're going to see a mass exodus out of Illinois in the coming months and years as businesses flee.
People keep talking about fencing the southern U.S. border to keep the illegal aliens from entering the country. I feel we need to fence off California to keep them from escaping and infecting the rest of the country. These folks are so far removed from any grasp of reality their need to be confined.
What's next? Look at the buildings in the video at 2:15, 2:27, 6:22 & 8:10. Concrete slabs weigh a few thousand pounds. Do you think that Green energy will be sufficient to lift these concrete slabs weighing a few thousand pounds even 30 feet in the air with a crane? Solar paneled or Ethanol powered cranes?! LOL!!! If the UCLA eloys ("The Time Machine" reference) regulate the construction industry to be Green, then they will destroy the construction jobs of working people.
As someone with a PhD, this pisses me off. As scientists and intellectuals, we are supposed to earn the trust the layman. To do what UCLA is doing is cowardly and beneath anyone with a true scientific calling.
I graduated with a degree in Economics and Environmental Studies focusing on Environmental Economics... Its possible to limit the jobs loss remain profitable and become more green. Unfortunately no -one wants to hear that side of it
@robm425 You made a claim that "Its possible to limit the jobs loss remain profitable and become more green." I challenged: How can you process raw materials like steel with green energy? My counter argument is green energy cannot power the needs of industrialization, therefore industries will die, therefore lots of jobs will be lost as a result of green energy. I doubt you will respond because you haven't thought of these things in your studies for your Econ & Environ degree, have you?
This is exactly why we should let "experts" run our lives. Because they are all selfless, saintly individuals concerned first and foremost with the well being of the community. And, let's face it, they are better and smarter than us, and do know better what's good for us.
Actually having a businessman on-camera to talk about this? Well, at least, That's a LOT more evidence than any Republicans in Congress have ever done to support their case against 'overregulation.'
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The worst part about conservative/corporate propaganda is that low-information voters will believe it and it will lead to mass climate change denial, which in turn will lead to destruction of our environment through willful ignorance.
Low information voter? You just described more than 60% of Californians who bought into the political BS of environmentalists, despite the overwhelming body of evidence proving that already established clean air standards produced cleaner air. Fact is, the environmental machine doesn't give a crap about jobs or the economy; they don't care about people. People are a cancer to mother earth.
Well let's see: A totalitarian regime lecturing the citizenry on the need for personal responsibility for the greater good while at the same time violating its very own message. Communism? Nah. FASCISM!
I wouldn't say that, because you completely misunderstand libertarians. They, like many other people, completely distrust the government, and this "scandal" is already strengthen their position. Every civilization needs a government, but not an inefficient and untrustworthy one like the one we have.
Because we need basic regulations such as security and infrastructure like roads/electricity to operate. However, the problem is our current government doesn't know what the hell it is supposed to be doing, and it's spending most of its time trying to cover its mistakes or applying the absolutely wrong solution to the situation.
@hansonslee "Because we need basic regulations such as security and infrastructure like roads/electricity to operate." That's because you wrongly presume those can't be regulated by the free market.
In every part of history and sociology, civilization needs a leader to make sure society is functioning with its basic necessities such as order and regulation (basic ones, not the crappy ones like this video presents). I know how bad our government is; however, we need to be very careful with how we think of things.
You are thinking in terms of economics, which is a completely different branch from basic political issues. Economics can't solve issues such as basic security, road building (very few companies are charitable enough), etc.
Plus, free market is a ideal with its own flaws (not that socialism is any better). If we are under a recession, under free market principles, we should be spending more b/c of cheaper products. Are we doing that today? How are we still in a recession?
@hansonslee "If we are under a recession, under free market principles, we should be spending more b/c of cheaper products."
that's not a free market principle; It's Keynesian economics which our government has been following since the early 70's and that's why we are in a recession to begin with and why we'll be in a recession in the foreseeable future.
Yes, that's true. However, who's supposed to protect our freedom? If there are two conflicting interests of freedom, then who's supposed to solve it? That's the government's role.
Yes, the above statement sounds kind of funny b/c our current government is expanding. However, if you look at the past such as the emancipation of slavery, it was the government who awarded the freedom.
@hansonslee It was also the government that gave sanction to a violation of the black man's right to the product of his labor for generations on end. The govt. merely "solved" a problem that it created by institutionalizing slavery for so long. All other western countries got rid of slavery peacefully though slavery wasn't Lincoln's real reason for war.The role of the government is to codify natural rights and common law. I see governments initiating force against individuals.
Basically, I believe that the government, if operated properly, can be a big help to our current society. The problem is that reality goes against my expectations. Our current government and its officials care more about their ideologies (like the Green machine) and their comfortable positions than the general social welfare, which can be greatly benefited by some pragmatism for once.
@hansonslee "we need leaders to dictate how we should function as a society."
you need a leader(s) to dictate how you should function in your society; I don't. Furthermore, I have a right of association and to live in the country of my birth without harassment from your leaders.
@PointlessRiot "I've realized that you guys are just fancy anarchists :)" What!??!? Anarchists? Noooooo!!!! Run for your lives!!! They're ANARCHISTS!!!!
The implosion of California continues. I just hope Californians stay there and don't infect other states with their stupidity anymore than they already have.
I think we should find EFFICIENT ways to reduce pollution. But if you are going to give BS evidence with false credentials about it, then you shouldn't implement a policy that is based on that study.
Dr. Enstrom was always a controversial figure. One time, he concluded on a Phillip Morris-funded study that second-hand smoking has no casual relationship between lung cancer. Whether he is right or wrong in this case, a person surrounded by conflicts will face the boot someday.
Until all this nanny bullshit is called what it is - a globalist assault on national sovereignty that must be taken at it's word, Libertarianism will forever be little more than an after thought in America's statist-dominated national discussion.
The problem is not the lack of formal education but the bad intentions imho. There are probably more people with real PhDs who produce phony "science" than people who fake credentials (fake credentials aren't a real argument, but rather a hint). Just take a look what all green projects you know of base on. "Energy-saving" lamp - hazardous chemicals, much more energy to produce. Ethanol-gas - takes more oil to produce than it replaces... And on and on. They are frauds, bad for the environment...
I was born and raised in Southern California and have lived here my whole 50-yrs of life except for a few years here and there at school and in the military. The beaches, the mountains, and the deserts all close by. The vast array of things to do and places to go along with the weather makes Southern California a beautiful place to live... except for the Liberals who have all but destroyed the ability to live here comfortably and with a clear conscience. They are destroying this state entirely.
This is great! More good people can move to Texas and/or Florida. If you live in CA, you deserve this misery...you keep electing these loons! Take heart! AMERICA HATES LIBERALS! but for now, this is great entertainment!
I'm willing to bet that by the time that guy's trucks die their expected "natural" death (instead of being killed off by legislation) there will already be a much better environmentally beneficial alternative vehicle or engine that the market produced on its own in a far more rational response to eco-concerns and increased productivity due to improved technology.
@LordSparkisvati I am a professional mechanic and no a diesel cannot be easily converted to natural gas. Diesel is an oil with low volatility, you can substitute this with many oils including baby oil. Natural gas is WAY too explosive to use in a diesel engine without major and VERY expensive engineering and modification. A diesel engine is based on spontaneous combustion. Gasoline engines lend themselves OK for adaption but it is still a so so replacement.
Progressives will stand by the study, then add the caveat "... but so what if Tran misrepresented his Ph.D and CARB was breaking the rules? Why do you Teabagger Regressives want to destroy the planet? Pollution is bad, everybody knows that."
@elsquibbs Why do the libs want to destroy the economy with a buch of feel-good shit, that will not do any good for the environment? California has become the new newfoundland.
@elsquibbs so what if ? are you serous ! you do realize you are saying it is better to lie for a cause . by the way was it not progressives that caused that abominable Prohibition ? My guess is that The Amazing Progressives Lied there way into that to!
Wow. This really is scarily scandalous. We are all witness to the continuing slow death of America. My prediction is that in ten years, America will resemble very closely the old Soviet Union, but with a much higher inflation rate.
Thank you Reason TV for doing this sort of reporting.

The new truck exhaust sytems are a joke...Truckers cannot afford to keep a new truck running...When one of these new exhaust systems fails, you better have a warranty, if not, it cost thousands and thousands to fix the truck...As in this vid says 15 grand for the exhaust section...The EPA is killing us financially...If we are all broke and starving, who is going to care about the environment anyway..

what they do not cover is the subsidies that california laid out offering a zero intrest loan, a 150 percent market value retirement payment for the old trucks, and 90 percent payment of the new tucks. all this paid for by a small shipping fee of 12 dollars per shipping container. The jobs vs environment argument was created by the long beach port authority so that it could have leverage in a bill to expand the ports of long beach in to the neighborhoods of west long beach.

I feel like people against global warming today are like Copernicus was a long time ago. You know that crazy guy that went against the common knowledge that the solar system orbited the earth and not the sun. The only difference is we now have a government with checks and balances so we can't order his death, but you can bet they sure can fire him for doing his job.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@thebestsumoeva How can anyone be "against global warming." I think the earth is warming due to mostly natural causes, but man probably does play a role. This video wasn't about climate change; it was about pollution controls based on politicized science.
joepeeler34 11 months ago
@joepeeler34 I think if you talked to any of the people who put together these "pollution controls" you will find a strong correlation between that idea and the global warming agenda.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@joepeeler34 Those of us that question ABG question exactly what actual contributions humans have made to this phenomenon. There's nothing wrong with that. Science is ABOUT making hypotheses and questioning findings.
Ovedya2006 11 months ago
@thebestsumoeva You mean like the huy in the video was fired for doing his job? There's really no comparison to Copernicus. Copernicus was a scientist who went against religious superstition and authority to defend a scientific fact based upon observation. Those of us who question ABG do so on the basis of some flawed science that was/is intentionally skewed because of bias. Actually, if anything, because we question ABG, WE are more like Copernicus.
Ovedya2006 11 months ago
@Ovedya2006 You have already proven yourself biased by calling any science that goes against the misconception that CO2 is destroying the planet "flawed science". Hypothesis is not science and there is next to no raw evidence supporting AGW. The best we have is theories and fear mongering with some statements on trends that have been occurring for thousands of years. Man made global warming can easily be shown to be incorrect, it is just unfortunate that there are so may closed minded people.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@thebestsumoeva
Making hypotheses is an essential part of the scientific process. Even questioning the "facts" is a part of that process. The further along science gets in the process of studying global warming the more discoveries are being made which disprove the assumption of humans as the primary cause. It's for this reason that there is disagreement in the scientific community.
Ovedya2006 11 months ago
@Ovedya2006 I will agree that hypothesis is part of the process but imo it is not really science until it is proven. An hypothesis with no proof is simply an opinion. Making judgments based off opinions is a huge logical fallacy as well.
thebestsumoeva 11 months ago
@thebestsumoeva In my estimation science IS the entire process. While hypothesis is an opinion it can be based on known facts (and usually are). The science of AGW is not really established because it's still evolving. Most of science is still evolving, and should be, because without that process we don't learn anything new. Consider the 12-year-old that is about to disprove the Theory of Relativity. Aside from being a case study himself, if he's right, he'll cause a scientific revolution.
Ovedya2006 11 months ago
@Ovedya2006 A hypothesis is not the entire scientific process at all. Any one can make an observation and come up with a theory based off it, but it isn't credible until it is proven experimentally. As a physics research assistant I can tell you there are thousands of theoretical papers on various quantum processes that get disproved by experiments everyday. Should we destroy our economies every time someone has a theory that can't be proven?
thebestsumoeva 10 months ago
@thebestsumoeva Please re-read what I wrote. I didn't say that hypothesis is the ENTIRE scientific process. I was defining "science" as "the entire scientific process." So when you refer to "the science of AGW," for example, you are describing the entire process in which certain theories, facts, etc. are derived.
Ovedya2006 10 months ago
@Ovedya2006 BTW you can't really prove Einstein wrong, his theories have been experimentally verified to a large degree. At best you can make a correction to his theory but it still doesn't take away from the predictive power that has already been shown to be true. Einstein did not prove Newton wrong so much as he made a correction at high energy/velocity. Newtons equations are true for 99% of what we see everyday...

From: Cleanports(dot)org quoting the CARB study
In California, heavy duty trucks are the biggest polluters among goods movement sources, contributing close to 650 tons of NOx per day in 2001, more than all other goods movement sources combined.
Statewide, heavy duty trucks released close to 37 tons per day of cancer-causing diesel particulate matter in 2001.
(California Air Resources Board, Emissions Reduction Plan for Ports and Goods Movement in California, 2006)
intellectable 11 months ago
@intellectable Yes, but how do we balance less pollution with reductions in living standards? Everythign we do causes pollution. Poverty correlates to lower life expectancy and a greater chance of engaging in unhealthy life styles and susceptibility to disease. Govt. is making people poorer. I think the calculus is all wrong. Other costs are being ignored. I think the science is in dispute and isn't being weighed properly. I think the govt. is overzealous. Are we killing more people that saving?
joepeeler34 11 months ago
@joepeeler34 You have stated many claims with out linking them together to supporting evidence.
intellectable 11 months ago

Is it coincidental that Europe has high standards of living and higher forms of health and safety regulations?
intellectable 11 months ago
@intellectable Eccessive environmental regulations create more poverty and disproportionately hurt the existing poor.
All chemicals, minerals, and elements are toxic in excess. If you drink too much water it is toxic to your system. What science is concerned with is the concetration and length of exposure to toxins. Much of what you eat has trace elements of arsenic, lead, and other harmful carcinogens, but they are only harmful at certain concentrations and periods of exposure.
joepeeler34 11 months ago
@joepeeler34
People said the same empty rhetoric when lead was being legislated to be removed from gasoline.
"Eccessive environmental regulations create more poverty and.."
This claim is a fallacy. Where is your peer reviewed study to support this?
Politics change but facts remain.
Again to be clear this not a political issue this a moral issue reflecting the values of culture.
Do you value health or the fictitious flow green pieces of paper?
Finally, think of BP's acceptable levels CORTEX.

joepeeler34 11 months ago
@joepeeler34
I can relate Pollution with Living Standards with a personal experience.
My roommate buys Glade "yucky air fresheners" with names like "Hawaiian breezes".
Aerosol Air fresheners have over 100 VOC toxic and hazardously polluting chemicals include acetaldehyde, chloromethane, and 1,4 dioxane (WebMD).
Spraying this in the kitchen will contaminate my food.
Do I have the right to regulate them polluting my air?
I think this is a moral issue that reflects the values of our culture.
intellectable 11 months ago
@intellectable Why didn't you tell your roommate to stop? Why didn't you move?
My problem is that the science is being driven by politics.
Do you drive a car or bicycle? Do you live in a house or a hut off the grid? Do you own a television? You have polluted my environment if you answered yes to any of these questions. If environmentalism is your highest value then your home is an abomination. You think there are absolute solutions when it a question of trade-offs.
joepeeler34 11 months ago 4

I found this report very sobering and revealing. There seems to be good case made here that CARB and UCLA have real interconnections that essentially means universities can unelectedly control political policies. In every part of history and sociology, civilization needs a leader to make sure society is functioning with its basic necessities such as order and regulation (basic ones, not the crappy ones like this video presents). I know how bad our government is; however, we need to be very careful with how we think of things.
hansonslee 11 months ago
@hansonslee "civilization needs a leader to make sure society is functioning with its basic necessities such as order and regulation"

no leader required.
the free market regulates itself.
every regulation passed was thought to be a "good one" at the time, by the people who passed it.
SuperAtheist 11 months ago
@SuperAtheist
How are we still in a recession?
hansonslee 11 months ago
@hansonslee "If we are under a recession, under free market principles, we should be spending more b/c of cheaper products."
that's not a free market principle; It's Keynesian economics which our government has been following since the early 70's and that's why we are in a recession to begin with and why we'll be in a recession in the foreseeable future.
SuperAtheist 11 months ago
@SuperAtheist
Also, Adam Smith, the father of capitalism, believed in the importance of government such as copyright, infrastructure, etc.
Also, our Founding Fathers valued government by scrapping the Articles of the Confederation and creating the Constitution.
You can let intangible such as the "invisible hand" to guide us, but in the end, we need leaders to dictate how we should function as a society.
hansonslee 11 months ago

Yes, that's true. However, who's supposed to protect our freedom? If there are two conflicting interests of freedom, then who's supposed to solve it? That's the government's role.
Yes, the above statement sounds kind of funny b/c our current government is expanding. However, if you look at the past such as the emancipation of slavery, it was the government who awarded the freedom.
hansonslee 11 months ago
@hansonslee It was also the government that gave sanction to a violation of the black man's right to the product of his labor for generations on end. The govt. merely "solved" a problem that it created by institutionalizing slavery for so long. All other western countries got rid of slavery peacefully though slavery wasn't Lincoln's real reason for war.The role of the government is to codify natural rights and common law. I see governments initiating force against individuals.

California used to be a great place to live. I will never live there again.

most states have gotten rid of car regulations and check ups because of the money it cost.

Progressives will stand by the study, then add the caveat "... but so what if Tran misrepresented his Ph.D and CARB was breaking the rules? Why do you Teabagger Regressives want to destroy the planet? Pollution is bad, everybody knows that."

@elsquibbs Why do the libs want to destroy the economy with regulations that are only feel-good, and will do NOTHING to protect the environment?

@elsquibbs Why do the libs want to destroy the economy with a buch of feel-good shit, that will not do any good for the environment? California has become the new newfoundland.

Wow. This really is scarily scandalous. We are all witness to the continuing slow death of America. My prediction is that in ten years, America will resemble very closely the old Soviet Union, but with a much higher inflation rate.
Thank you Reason TV for doing this sort of reporting.

Well this is gonna drive prices through the roof. Maybe Californians can take over the haulage capacity on their bicycles.

America, for the leader of the free world, your system of government is extremely fucked up.
