@fl3162 I remember a quote that says something along the lines of "Everybody knows who Jerry Lewis is, he is the funny one. But what does Dean Martin do? I'll tell you what Dean Martin does, he makes Jerry Lewis funny."
For characters like Eric Morecambe and Jerry Lewis, the straight man is a foil for their comedy. The straight person makes their wacky character funny by comparison.
Wow, it's amazing the reverance that Eric and Ernie clearly show towards Arthur Lowe. It's just great to see three comic legends on screen together. : )
This is brilliant! I love the friendly warm atmosphere that this, like every other Morecambe and Wise piece, has! One question for an ignorant fan, who is the lady who comes down at the end of the show? x
wow, utube never ceases to amaze me , i love reading the comments and each time i learn so much , i am a great fan of dads army but never knew te cast did not get along or that arthur lowe was a drinker
He wasn't at all disliked by those who worked on Dad's Army. That's not the case at all. He was very much like Mainwaring, yes, but he most certainly wasn't disliked. He was friends with John Le Mesurier, the two of them just didn't socialise outside of the show. The rest of the cast had a wonderful affection for Arthur, I can assure you.

@canaryspike Thanks for your response. I did'nt know any of the Dad's army cast personally, though a recent BBC documentary certainly gave the impression that he was'nt popular.
I recently bought the 2009 edition of Bill Pertwee's book (Making Of A Television Legend) which I highly recommend. The book is certainly much kinder to Arthur Lowe than the televised documentary.
Interesting that Arthur Lowe says that if the lady isn't in the show he doesn't want to be either. It was said that his actress wife, Joan, wanted to be in shows he was in and he turned down many a job because she couldn't have a part.
This could be the only recorded instance of Eric Morecambe allowing a guest to take centre stage, as he does here with the great Arthur Lowe. He actually leaves the screen for a while and at one point ad-libs "It's an easy day for me, this" as Lowe matches him for comic brilliance.
Well said, I agree 100%. Mr Lowe even does the about-turn like Eric! AL's physical comedy is superb, the way he kisses his hand instead of hers and is tossed around by the 'lady who comes down at the end of the show' is masterly, a pleasure to watch.
Does anybody know where I can actually find the Mutiny on the Bounty sketch?

It would be great to dedicate this to the lovely Janet Webb (1930-1983). Many thanks for posting it.
Arthur Lowe was undoubtedly a good comic actor, but it seems he became somewhat disliked among those who worked with him on Dad's Army.
