In higher compression vehicles (or with turbo/super charger), higher octane fuel may be required due to the extra stress occurring in the cylinders. Using lower octane fuel in one of these vehicles can cause detonation to occur well before TDC, which makes engine internals bend/break/attempt low earth orbit in ways that they were never intended.
87 and 93 octane fuel have the same amount of energy, but the 93 is more stable. This means that it will resist detonation when put into higher compression/heat situations. At the same time, a flame takes time to propagate. Because of this, if a vehicle calls for 87 and you put in 93, the vehicle will compensate by firing the spark plug earlier (before TDC). This means that the 93 may hurt performance.
Octane is a typical component of gasoline, but the number you're seeing at the pump is the fuel's octane rating. This mean's that it's the rating of the fuel when compared to octane in volatility.
Nitrous oxide and nitro methane are two different things.
Nitrous oxide (NOS) is applied from a pressurized container. It's basically dumping extra oxygen into the engine without the explosion hazard associated with pure oxygen and oil.
Nitro methane is a liquid. It actually produces less power then gasoline, but it requires less air (oxygen) to burn. This means that you can push more into a cylinder (running more rich) and get more power.
none of what he said is true. When you have a supercharged engine you have lower compression because you have god damn supercharger which compresses the air in and it will cause an explosion if there is 10.5 compression. FAILD. Another thing is that premium burns cleaner and for 00.01 of premium it takes 00.02 regular because premium makes bigger explosions when ignites . Octane boosters not always bad. there are expansive once with real Nitrogen oxyde in them. they work 200% not the$4.9 but 20
@aleksankazakov Wow you are so very very wrong lol. Higher octane does NOT mean higher energy. It is the same energy output between all the octanes but a higher octane will resist detonation of the fuel more(wont go boom to early, herp), its not hard to understand.
@xex2kok only if you run a lawn mower or a chain saw. New sophisticated cars use computers to control ignition . If you put a low grade gas in BMW computer will downgrade the hp output , Not just luxury cars but some cars like V6 Accord or V6 camry. If I had put low grade gas in my old car 94 mitsubishi diamante it will feel like I run on 2 cylinders. When the fuel crisis happened in 08 i used low grade gas and I was riding around with half power.
@aleksankazakov Do you know how it decides its a lower grade gas? It does not just sense it and change, it senses KNOCK IN THE ENGINE and then lowers the timing based on that. So you are having a bit of detonation and then it fixes it, that is not good!
hi. killmypain. i found that running a 95 oct instead of recomended 90 (company paid for gas, and i felt like experimenting although expected to find no difference) the 1.4 haiunday felt like it had slightly better pickup at low revs. (possibly due to the fuel being less prone to induce knocking, which is most nocible in low rev range). overall a very, very slight effect, but if someone else is paying for it, then why not :)
Next time, mount the camera higher so it's not shooting up at your chin. It makes the top of your head pin head like. Also, your framing sucks. Your head is right at the bottom of the frame and you have some empty space up above your pin head. Not good. Also you say hum 3 times a thought. Not good 2.0. Also, get a mike that you can attach on your shirt so it's closer to your mouth so you don't sound like your talking into a tin can.
I just bought the gumout kind, it does seam to be a little more responsive, altough it probably wasn't worth the $5 but I figured I'd try it out because my friend uses it. I dodn't think to check the manual, I'll do that. Another thing, for all the idiots out there octane is octane, it's a molecule, it's like saying methane or propane or hexane, octane is just another hydrocarbon
pretty much his saying if your car doesnt have a performance engine there is no need to run premium fuel its true though would you put racing fuel in your volvo

I have never been afraid ro rev my z28 even with cat back and coil ,intake, and 350 hp i afraid of it now
Good review, however nothing about additives explained.....From what i understand high octane reduces deposits at the port fuel injector, intake valve and controls combustion chamber deposits to maintain "like new" performance of the vehicle. Does this hold water?
@archer4321 No. Assuming your vehicle doesn't require higher octane fuel there is no benefit of using it. Additives can do those things you mentioned but you can have 87 with additives and you can have 91 without additives, so octane rating doesn't indicate what additives are in the fuel.
Is 91 octane at BP plus 104 maximum octane booster helping my 99crown vic p71? I do kinda notice it wants to drive faster but idk now lol dont like wastin money as u say "I puh primiume in ther"

well i race motocross, and i know for a fact that premium does make it run better, the bike doesnt bog like it does with regula unleaded, it doesnt blow oil like it does with regular unleaded, and the manual doenst explain anything about premium,
My first thought was "What is this drunken redneck gonna say about octane?" Turns out i was wrong he really knows his shit. He has dumbed down the the explanations to a layman level.
premium vs regular will give a normal car slightly better gas mileage but usually you go form 22.5MPG to 22.7 so the extra expense is not worth it at these prices.
Ive got a 1978 ferrari dino and when i got the car with only 33000 miles, it had terrible knocking! i was like wtf!, some idiot didn't use a lead additive and it's octane levels need to be around 99-103, after this was done by premixing, the car now runs perfect, luckily the engine wasn't damaged! but thats right, higher octane retards the fuel itself and gives it a chance to burn correctly, as for lead, this acts as a lubricant for the valves, hope this settles things

OK,
In order to get fire to shoot out of your exhaust you need a spark plug in the exhaust pipe with a way of making it spark. There are kits sold now for that purpose. Also, most ATVs or dirt bikes have a spark arrestor built into the exhaust to prevent forest fires. You can get a car or bike to backfire but that can be bad.
As far as the burnout goes the only reason a person would need to do this is to heat up the rubber in their tires so they can get more traction before a race.

You don't necessarily need a spark plug, if your exhausts temp is high enough it will ignite, at optimal temperature my evo will spark every time its shifted on boost, but this is due to anti lag retarding timing and dumping un burnt fuel into the decat 3" turbo back, which is extremely hot, then it ignites loud bang and a big spark.
