Ok guys, ready for some truth. None of us was there. It takes faith to believe that the earth and universe are about 6 thousand years old or about 5.4 billion years old. Science can never "prove" either one because that requires observation and that is long since gone. It is a question of where you put your faith and hope. Many Christians put their faith in the story of atheists rather than the story of the Bible, it seems because of great social pressure. Choose your poison carefully.

Many readers read the bible quick, clumsy, linear fashion. However verses 1 and 2 ARE NOT LINKED IN TIME! Therefore the Earth could well be 1 billion years old!

(To jump in to this discussion about the age of the Earth: I have begun studying Hebrew, and if you look at the original text of Genesis, the word that is translated as "son" can also mean "descendant." So adding up the generations does not provide a clear age for the Earth. It's the same with the word for "day," as in "on the fourth day, God created..." The Hebrew for "day" actually means "length of time," not a solar day. Everything is done in God's time). :D
If we can't believe the very first few words, how can we believe the rest of the bible?

Does knowing the age of the Earth beyond a shadow of a doubt change how much God loves us? Does it change that we are redeemed through His blood? As much as we would like to know all the answers, faith would have no place in a world like that.

as a child I was fascinated by how cars move and how computer programs work. As I was studying in University I discovered how they were made and invented; how the program was written by the coder.
However, knowing how these things came to be doesn't disprove that their inventors exist now does it?
I learned how tectonic action and stresses in rocks can cause folded mountains and earthquakes. That volcanism is a product of magmatic processes, hotspots, convergence zones and whatnot. That the erosion happens through time and eroded sediments deposit and in time become strata.

I strongly believe it was the -> Flood of Noah's Ark <- 5,000 yrs ago that made this earth to "appear to look as though" it's billions of yrs old. The 'Flood' aged this earth at a very rapid pace.
@Mail345 What you say about the flood aging the earth to look really old is true. But the 6,000 yrs old is wrong tho. No where in the bible does it mention only 6000 yrs. It give generations tho. So if you add it all up, its 1,500 yrs for preflood. We have written documents dating back to 4500 BC. So you add the 1500 and the 4500 together and you get 8000 yrs. This earth is between 8000yrs and 10,000 yrs old. =D Think about that one.
@l0rdch33z3 Yeah, you got your addition wrong, or did you just not read what was written wrong? 4500BC to 2000AD is 6500 years, from time Adam was created to the flood is roughly 1500 years. 6500+1500=8000. Now, given the fact that all geneologies in the bible are incomplete, one has to add up to but not more than 2000 years. This is all simple math. I am sorry if you get angry over this simple equation, but it is the truth.

Archaeologists have been able to date these texts from the references to different events that have happend and to Kings and other types of rulers, so on and so forth. So going off of that, 4500 bc to now (2010), its been roughly just over 5600 yrs, plus or minus a few years. Thats why i believe in just over 8k years, the 6500 plus the roughly 1500 years preflood, makes 8k years. =D

@success2k it makes a lot of sence to me, it seems to me that God (if you believe in him) would have to be able to act in ways with no scientific explanation because if he was bound by scientific laws then he would be just...another being who understands science and nature more than we do and therefore he wouldn't be God AND couldn't have created us.

(To jump in to this discussion about the age of the Earth: I have begun studying Hebrew, and if you look at the original text of Genesis, the word that is translated as "son" can also mean "descendant." So adding up the generations does not provide a clear age for the Earth. It's the same with the word for "day," as in "on the fourth day, God created..." The Hebrew for "day" actually means "length of time," not a solar day. Everything is done in God's time). :D

Does knowing the age of the Earth beyond a shadow of a doubt change how much God loves us? Does it change that we are redeemed through His blood? As much as we would like to know all the answers, faith would have no place in a world like that.

a similar analogy:
as a child I was fascinated by how cars move and how computer programs work. As I was studying in University I discovered how they were made and invented; how the program was written by the coder.
However, knowing how these things came to be doesn't disprove that their inventors exist now does it?

I learned how tectonic action and stresses in rocks can cause folded mountains and earthquakes. That volcanism is a product of magmatic processes, hotspots, convergence zones and whatnot. That the erosion happens through time and eroded sediments deposit and in time become strata.
And through all that what I never understood was why oh why do other people's faith get shaken by all that? isn't it wonderful to discover how God created the world and how He does His miracles?

@Mail345 What you say about the flood aging the earth to look really old is true. But the 6,000 yrs old is wrong tho. No where in the bible does it mention only 6000 yrs. It give generations tho. So if you add it all up, its 1,500 yrs for preflood. We have written documents dating back to 4500 BC. So you add the 1500 and the 4500 together and you get 8000 yrs. This earth is between 8000yrs and 10,000 yrs old. =D Think about that one.

@l0rdch33z3 Yeah, you got your addition wrong, or did you just not read what was written wrong? 4500BC to 2000AD is 6500 years, from time Adam was created to the flood is roughly 1500 years. 6500+1500=8000. Now, given the fact that all geneologies in the bible are incomplete, one has to add up to but not more than 2000 years. This is all simple math. I am sorry if you get angry over this simple equation, but it is the truth.

@l0rdch33z3 The 4500BC comes from the date of the oldest written documents. Archaeologists have been able to date these texts from the references to different events that have happend and to Kings and other types of rulers, so on and so forth. So going off of that, 4500 bc to now (2010), its been roughly just over 5600 yrs, plus or minus a few years. Thats why i believe in just over 8k years, the 6500 plus the roughly 1500 years preflood, makes 8k years. =D

Many problems, holes not being addressed in secular schools: assumes all come from one cell animals, then on to 2,4,8, 10,20 etc. We have plenty of one cells but no 2,3,4,5,10,20 cell animals. @success2k well the way i see it, faith PROVES that there is a God (maby not as we think he is but still a God) simply because of the longing we have for him. its just like nature, a baby animal crys for milk, but before he could cry for it there had to be a milk to want in the first place. for a wolf to howl for a mate, the knowledge that there is a mate to respond must be in him. why would a person long for a God if there was no such thing? something or someone had to put that longing there.

wow you are diluted the second law of thermodynamics is entropy all things tend towards chaos. meaning that everything is degenerating and therefore is going to stop moving a heat death of sorts and the bible doesn't okay abortion

well eventually sure the 2nd law of td will see a tendendency toward chaos... back here in the practical world... I have one life to live and i am going to leave things better than I found them for future generations until entropy envelops all. Thats like saying to a christian why bother living life... revelation is coming... eventually
