Why does it really matter which one is "better"? They are both are tremendous talents. One wrote It. The other is covering it. I don't think Jeff tweedy was like "oh hey guys. we could cover this song and do it WAY better than Daniel Johnston". They wanted to cover it so they did. Johnston is a brilliant, childlike songwriting talent, but there's nothing fun about listening to a hulking manchild with a voice like an eight year-old boy singing folk songs. The versions by Beck and Wilco are stunning; bluntly, Johnston's is torturous. I love quirky performers as a rule, but Johnston is the only one I can think of who requires other artists to find the gold buried in the deep mines of his talent.

all that matters in a cover is if the artist that is covering the song puts as much heart into the song as daniel did. wilco does a great job, and so does beck. they both put their hearts into the song because they know how great of a song it truly is.

Daniel Johnston, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley...their music was all beautiful. but i think their music was meant to be played by everyone. for the really elaborate stuff like Pink Floyd or The Beatles, that's another story.

you might say Dan's is your favorite, but it's all subjective at that point. as long as his original message is kept in the song i think every version is beautiful.
